The biker gimmick was a much needed change and I enjoyed it. Taker was in the WWF for 9.5 years at that point and needed something drastically new. It kept him fresh and led to a great "deadman" return at WM20.

i was a fan of it because it had evolved nicely. if i wanted to see deadman undertaker, i had more than enough exposure to him through all the tapes i'd buy or rent, and we all knew he would return to the deadman again.
the only time i wasn't into taker is when it was taker and kane feuding with triple he and stone cold. just found that whole feud to be messy. i know many would probably disagree considering the star caliber involved in them.

By far the best period of his full-time career, character-wise. Was much more believable and interesting than the "die die die, I'm going to eat your soul" nonsense he did for the first ten years in the WWF. The grizzled vet stuff bounced so well off the goofier characters of the time like Angle, Rock, Edge and Christian, Matt Hardy V1. Made for great TV opposite McMahon too. I remember being so pleasantly surprised by Taker vs HHH at WM17. Phenomenal match. I loved the heel turn too, the stuff with Maven was gold.

I was never a fan of ABA Undertaker. My favorite is his 90-94 look.

Although the WM17 match was awesome. But my favorite version was his debut Undertaker until he went to the purple look.

What I hated about ABA Taker was that it ruined the aura of his character. He was a mysterious person who everyone feared for 10 years but suddenly he's a normal guy who's married and drives around in a motorcycle.
It made his whole deadman gimmick look like roleplay.

I never liked the Deadman character, but appreciated his in ring work. So the ABA and Big Evil were MAJOR breaths of fresh air to me, and the only times I truly enjoyed the Undertaker as a character.

I thought the gimmick would have been much better had he incorporated more of the Deadman stuff. Like a "demon biker" kind of vibe with the flowing leather jacket, etc. When he just went to being the ABA he just sounded like a redneck to me and it was a very jarring change. I wasn't a fan of the first ABA phase Something like the Ghost Ryder but with flesh? That's exactly what he was...

I think Undertaker's promos when he was the American bad ass were great.

I could be totally wrong about this, I'm just going by memory, but I feel like he started using this gimmick when Austin wasn't around that much??? Like maybe they needed a new top baby face?

Personally, i didn't think the Lord of Darkness gimmick had the same kind of legs as the original Deadman gimmick. That one was evolving by 98 to feature early signs of the ABA era to come. Then they went the Lord of Darkness direction, which was fresh at first, but seemed stale by July of 99 IMO. So when he came back as ABA, i saw that as the natural extension of where they were headed, at points, in 97/98. It also served to have a better shelf life ,in my view , than Ministry Taker would have and gave him a needed shot in the arm. It also made perfect sense to me when he dropped the gimmick and created the hybrid of that and the Deadman, by turning into the outlaw type character he is today. For a gimmick that was so over the top theatrical, Taker found a way to evolve it beyond anything Vince even thought it would be. The ABA era was an important component of that.
