It's well known that Bret Hart was forced to retire prematurely due to concussions. However, given how miserable he was in WCW, would it have been possible for him to leave WCW and return to WWF had he not retired? Or would he have probably retired anyway rather than go back to the place that he felt screwed him badly?

I feel like he would have gone back. But it wouldn't have been immediately. Probably around the time of his HoF induction,we would have seen one last WWE run with him still able to go. But i don't think he would have bolted back to Vince at any time from 2000-2002 anyway.

Well he did go back, technically.

I believe Bret only had a 3 year contract with WCW, and it would have expired in November of 2000. So yes, I do think Bret would have came back to the WWE then only if Owen was still alive.
I think that the day Owen Hart died, it made Bret not wanna go back. But time heals all wounds, and thankfully Bret did come back for his 2006 Hall of Fame deal, and then in 2010 for a few last WWE matches. Even though they weren't wrestling clinics, it was still nice to see Bret get a good farewell.

I red once that Bret was backstage at a WWE house show in 1998 and said that he might consider returning when his WCW contract ran out.
Then Owen died and that was the door closed for sure.

I wish Bret had a proper last run in WWE. It's a disgrace how badly WCW misused him in those few years he was there.

yep, i think he would have. especially considering that shawn michaels was basically out of the company in an active capacity.
would've been interesting to see bret in the forefront of the attitude era.

Honestly between getting screwed by Vince and then Owen's death I couldn't see Bret coming back to the WWE any sooner than he did.

Wouldn't see it happening because of Owen and the Screwjob. I remember reading also that he considered his last good match in WWE was against Taker at one Night Only.

I feel like he would have finished out his WCW contract, then taken some serious time off. I think if he had the ability to "go" he'd have been more willing to return before he did. I occasionally fantasize about a final true run in the WWE for him.

So 2003 would have been the earliest he could have returned.

Who knows had the Montreal Screwjob not happened if the Attitude Era would have taken off like it did. What really benefited Steve Austin's first run as the WWF Champion the only former World Champion they had was The Undertaker. Had Hart been in the WWF, who knows. This is one of those countless what if's the wrestling world has.

There was such bad blood between Bret and Vince after the Montreal screwjob - that I don't think Bret would have returned. I think Bret might have been willing to work some indy dates, helping out indy companies with the odd match or 2 though.
