So I'm a big fan of the 1997 and 1998 years of WWF. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but pre WrestleMania 14 DX and NAO is my favorite. NAO wasn't in DX yet, but they teamed up a good bit and Road Dogg even wore DX shirts from time to time. When NAO was just starting off, they were such good heels and in my opinion, must see. I can remember hoping that would actually join DX and continue their ways. Then Shawn got hurt and the DX Army was formed after Mania. Anyone else have an opinion on the outlaws before DX? Should DX turned face so soon after Shawn leaving?

The DX army was always goint to form whether Shawn was their or not. Infact the NAO's were going to join DX at the 1998 Royal Rumble but it was pushed back till the night after WM.
Now I'm one of their biggest fans and will say that I didn't like the NAO's until WM14. Before they joined DX they both acted and dressed like goofballs and got no reaction from the crowd at all. They impressed me at WM14 but before that their matches were horrible and I actually felt for LOD at the time who were having to put them over. Once they joined DX it was a huge turn around. Their matches improved and they became the tag team version of Stone Cold and trailed second behind him in merchandise sales.
If they never joined DX they would be a gone and forgotten tag team.

I'm of the believe that DX needed the Outlaws more than the Outlaws needed DX.
No doubt, the Outlaws would have been THE team of the Attitude Era with or without DX. But the two entities fit like a glove.
For some reason the biggest memory of pre-DX Outlaws is Billy missing the diving leg drop by a mile at Survivor Series lol.

The New Age Outlaws were amazing!! I was always a fan of that team, and they may be one - if not THE greatest - tag team of all time for the WWE.
As others have stated, DX needed the NAO more so than the NAO needing DX. But because of DX, I think the NAO will always be remembered and put in a high spot of greatness.
But I do remember when Billy and Roadie won the Tag Titles in late 1997 from the LOD, I kept thinking, "really?? Double J and Rockabilly are the Tag Champions now?!?!" because I remember when they started teaming as heels after the whole Honky Tonk Man situation, they still looked like Double J and Rockabilly a bit. It wasn't until Billy started wearing tights and Road Dogg put the braids back into his hair, that I saw something cool and unique about them.
Still, one of the best!!

Yeah I had heard they were slated to join, it was just a matter of time. Ugh, that's my biggest miss in wrestling. Shawn leaving broke my heart, haha. Could you imagine the DX Army with HBK there? Granted it may have stunted Triple H by a little, but it would have also set up a big feud between him and Shawn. Probably culminating at WM 15.
But back on topic. NAO as heels was a great run in my opinion. You knew the other team could murder them, but they always pulled some crap to get out of it with a W.
