Who here misses the old Mean Gene Reports and Sean Mooney hosting the countdown shows? Those would always get me hyped for the event and best yet they detailed each match with promos and such.
It destroys these ''kickoff'' shows of today.

I miss them so much as well. These kickoff shows before a PPV is the WWE trying to emulate the NFL. A simple 5-10 minute Report/Event Center segment would go far in enhancing the product today.

I started getting PPVs around 1993 so the 30 minutes before the show were all I knew. It was usually Todd Pettingill, who I didn't mind as a kid. It was cool to know the fans at the show got a pre-PPV match, even though it was usually a job match. When they started the Free For All, I really got into that. Non-PPV buyers could watch the countdown and a free match. I have a VHS home tape of Survivor Series and they had Gorilla and Heenan doing the countdown which was cool.

I did enjoy watching them, but at the same time they aren't something I miss now.

Those classic big 4 PPV themes got me pumped as well. The countdown clock would still have like 5 minutes on it but at the same time it be playing for example the Rumble theme and you'd be like I don't mind the wait lol.

I enjoyed the Events Center type hype for the shows tremendously as a kid. They knew how to build anticipation very well thrpugh those weeks. Just think, they could make a match like 123 Kid vs Ted DiBiase MEAN something, which is whats lacking in todays environment. The countdown shows were fun, but i appreciate the modern pre shows they do now, as it does provide a modern take on the countdown show format and does help to hype the upcoming event. Its the hype ,outside of the main events, thats missing in the weeks leading up that i miss now. In reality though, theres almost no way to do those now simply because of the number of ppv events and lack of time to do this. Plus several times ,matches aren't even booked until the last minute. As for the themes for the "Big 4" , i do miss those quite a bit. Especially the Rumble and SummerSlam ones.

Back in the day each feud was built up so nicely and majority of the time had a pay off. Today like you said they just randomly throw matches on PPV at the last minute with no build.
Overall the personalities then were WAY better than todays. It's really a no contest in my book.

The pre-shows were fun back then because we were actually excited for the PPV that was coming on!
Many reasons for that too. First of all, we were used to squash matches on Superstars of Wrestling or Wrestling Challenge. So to see The Warlord vs. Tito Santana at SummerSlam 90 was huge for us! So even a pre-show 30 minutes leading up to the PPV back then was huge for us!
As for the Free For All shows that ran from January 1996 - July 1997, they were pretty neat. You got to see one wrestling match take place for free, and get you hyped to wanna buy the PPV to see it. Plus the In Your House shows were awesome, since they were only $19.99! That is mega cheap even back then for a PPV. Though it was only 2 hours, they packed a lot in those 2 hours.

I didn't mind Todd Pettingil during the New Generation Era. He atleast showed energy on the countdown shows and even the old show Mania.
