Hey everybody!
It's been a while since I've posted a good old-fashioned pickup thread..... I've been pretty busy hitting the indy circuit in my area. I still collect the figures, but for various reasons, I've cut back a bit..... but I wanted to share several recent pickups I've had!
So let's get right to it!
$2 Elites...
So, I went to a Flea Market with only $20 in my pocket..... I'd been there before, and wasn't really expecting to find anything decent. Imagine my surprise to find a giant blanket, laid out with about 300 Mattel figures (mostly Elites).... many that I was missing from my collection!
I asked the dude how much, fully expecting some ridiculous price...... "Two dollars".... he replied.
"TWO DOLLARS?" I exclaimed, poorly hiding my excitement! I had to remember, this is a flea market.... the dude could raise the price at will...... so I calmly started selecting the ones I wanted.....
Problem was, I only had $20....... and, no ATM around. Looking back, I passed on a lot of good stuff - but overall, I tried to fill in some gaps in my collection & save myself some cash by not buying these at retail. None of them had any accessories, but I figured it was still important to have some of these figures in my collection.
Anyhoo..... here are the $2 figures I selected.....
Junk Yard Dog - I know this was a major shelf-warmer, but I still never bought it at retail. Wasn't a huge JYD fan, but I did appreciate the figure. Just didn't want to spend $12-$18 on it. But for $2? Sure!
Entrance Greats Dibiase - if I could go back, I'd probably not have bought this & gotten something else. I already have the Elite HOF Dibiase, which is better than this, especially since this is missing the "Entrance" gear. For some reason, I thought it was important to have this....... it's okay, though.
Legends Kamala (original) - My thinking on this was that since I never got the original Legends figure, I could avoid buying the upcoming re-release if I bought this one..... it's a nice figure! I never saw this at retail.... I can live without the racially insensitive accessories.....
Elite Diesel - this is quite a find. Because I have this figure already MOC - but I went & got it autographed. So now, I wanted one loose, but didn't dare open my autographed original. Problem solved for two dollars! Belt not included, added by me....
APA - Farooq & Bradshaw - this was a bit of a tough decision, as I know these things came with some pretty cool accessories.... but, I decided I didn't really need to spend $30+ at retail when these figures weren't really at the top of my list. But now, for $4..... the APA has a spot in my collection!
Elite Dean Ambrose - Funny thing was, I was really close to picking this up at KMart a few weeks ago when they had it on sale for $14..... but I ended up passing. Glad I did! Now I have an Elite Dean Ambrose for $2! Great steal here!
Elite Jerry "The King" Lawler - Another one, I'm not sure why I felt like I needed this - I actually like the more recent Basic better..... but, not a bad addition to my collection.
Elite Legend Jake "The Snake" Roberts - now this was quite a gem! I passed on this at retail back in 2010 (estimated) and have regretted it ever since. Really didn't want to pay high online prices, but always felt like this was missing from my set! Can't believe I got this for $2! Probably my favorite find of the day!
Elite Iron Sheik - C'mon, I've gotta have this guy in my collection! Never got it the first time around....
DM Undertaker - Make long story short behind this - I ordered it for myself from Amazon last year around Christmas for about $12.... it wasn't until around February that I realized the package never came. Perhaps it was stolen from my doorstep? Since so much time had passed, I never even bothered to file a complaint or anything, I just said screw it.... and I wasn't buying it at retail & spending the money again...... but for $2...... why not?
So, all those pickups for around $20! Not a bad day at all! Filled several holes in my collection, but they were mostly figures I had no intention of spending full price to get....
Of course, I've been paying full (or sale) prices for some figures, too.... here are some of those!
Figures Bought At Regular/Sale Prices
Elite 1-2-3 Kid - I think this was one of those Toys R Us sales..... really wanted this figure, as I have great memories of his historic upset over Razor Ramon on Monday Night Raw!
Elite Terry Funk - Another Toys R Us sale pickup.... I actually bought two of this one, because I was hoping to get one signed.... had that become a reality two weeks ago at the ICONS Collector Fest at the original ECW Arena!
On the loose one, it really (really) bothered me that this figure did not include knee pads. I hate it when Mattel goes to all the trouble to create a beautiful figure like this, but leaves out one important (easy) detail! So, I found a basic Randy Orton to serve as a donor & did my own fixup.....
And meeting Terry Funk was probably the highlight of the day for me at the September ICONS Collector Fest! Especially when we were interrupted by Perry Saturn!
Elite "Macho Man" Randy Savage - No joke, this might have cracked my "Top 10" in terms of favorite figures. I really like the way they did the plastic shirt..... I wish they'd had this shirt mold for many of the previous Randy Savage figures (like the WM8 one & the "Slim Jims" one). I really, really like this figure! It ranks up there next to the Savage DM for me...... I haven't bought the matching Warrior yet, I might if I see one in the $12 range on Amazon....
Elite Finn Balor - I feel very lucky to have found this, as I don't think I've seen it since..... awesome figure, such great detail! Mattel knocked this one out of the park!
Summerslam Heritage - Hacksaw Jim Duggan - I really like this figure! I was always a Duggan fan, I like when they do odd one-off figures like this! Great stuff here! Great headscan, too!
DM "Great American Bash" Sting - this was a major Pain In The A$$ to get.... I purchased it through Ringside, since the description clearly stated that this was the figure with "No Laces". My local TRU had about 20 of these things on the shelf, but they all had laces. I thought I would easily find a "no laces" version SOMEWHERE..... never saw it once. So I eventually broke down & just ordered it from Ringside.
Of course - the one that arrived at my house had laces. I e-mailed them, and Ben said he wasn't sure if they had anymore with no laces but I could return it.
So, I went & sent it back.... boxed it up.... took it to the post office...... and a few days later, I did receive the Sting with no laces! WHEW..... thank goodness!
I'm not thrilled with the headscan on this, but it is an absolute must for my collection. I'm a huge Sting fan!
Basic Sid Justice - got this one from Amazon! I'm glad they made this figure, as I loved this 1992 era & I'll buy any of the figures from that era....
Ric Flair / Charlotte Battlepack - got this one from Amazon.... the packaging looked like it had rolled off the truck.... and got run over by a train! Seriously, the plastic bubble was just sitting on top, but it was totally disconnected from the blister card..... however, the figures inside looked fine. I bought these to have loose, so I'm okay with it... but don't buy figures from Amazon if you're looking for MOC!
I also treated myself & did a really fun fixup on this Flair.... I ordered a white robe from Ralph's! I LOVE the way this looks! Very, very happy with this. As you might have guessed by my nickname on here - I'm a HUGE Ric Flair fan, so this Basic is now a highlight in my collection!
I also like the Charlotte figure with this set! I hope they eventually release a Charlotte Elite figure with a robe!
Elite Diamond Dallas Page - I had picked this up a while back & kept it MOC, I hope to get it signed one day... but I picked up a spare during KMarts $14 sale a few weeks ago........ they didn't have a lot to choose from, but I like this figure!
Basic Sting - grabbed two of these from Amazon, since I'm a Sting nut! Same basic complaint about the headscan, but I love the attire choice!
Target Exclusive - WCW Ring with Dusty Rhodes - As a huge fan of the original WCW, this is an absolute must-have in my collection! I was able to track one down pretty easily using the Target inventory tracker... The Dusty Rhodes figures is nice, too! What a wonderful set! Too bad Target hasn't gotten anything else of note in the last 4 months.... the shelves there right now are empty.
I love this set though! Keep the WCW stuff coming!
Now, I need for them to release a WCW Nitro Basic ring! Hook us up, Mattel!
If you've stayed with it this long, thanks for reading this long thread! I'll let my pickups build up for a while again & post when I have some worthwhile stuff! I have the Wolfpack Sting on pre-order from Ringside, and I'm really excited for that to come soon!
Thanks again!
