Got the key to the locked dungeons a few days ago. I thought the pacing of these secret dungeons were great until last night. The Steyliff location took about 4-5 hours and I used nearly 60 elixirs, 60 hi-potions, 30 hi-elixirs, and 25 ethers. Plus, I had to have fire and thunder magic for a few gels that don't take physical damage. The biggest pains were the tomberries; lvl 84 and just time consuming. Also, there are 8 camps.
I really wanted to quit, but I didn't!

Man that extra dungeon sounds intense. I am level 72 right now. I probably should go ahead and finish the story then come back and finish off these hunts. I still need the last kings arm. Trying to find the hunt quest to kill the jabberwock to save myself time.

Trying to find the hunt quest to kill the jabberwock to save myself time. There are 8 extra dungeons. They are the sealed doors in dungeons you've already explored, usually somewhere behind the boss location. I'd say Steyliff is the longest, but I'm attempting Costlemark Tower tonight. In the extra dungeon, you cannot use items so you rely on magic and camp food to get through it. It's been said there are about 50 floors, so there should be about 50 battles. I've skimmed others playthroughs, but it's a 2 hrs minimum dungeon, even with the games best gear and weapons.

While I'm loving the game overall, I realized how much I missed having a dedicated summoner in my party after calling on Ramuh for the first (and so far only) time 25 hours into the game last night. Also found out why the guys don't like travelling at night. Big-ass Iron Giant at least 10 levels above my party and a couple other creatures pop out in the middle of the street. Tough fight, but we made it through.

Welp, I made it to the extra dungeon boss at the Costlemark Tower. Made it there in 3 hrs (lvl99 with end game weapons/accessories and ap maxed)), could have been 2-2.5 hours, but I died twice fighting a sub-boss with intsa-kill abilities.
I've got to say, I was alittle unnerved thinking about the fact that I couldn't use items, but all-and-all it's a fairly simple dungeon. There are 5 (or) 6 camps, the last one is about 5 floors before the boss. Both the sub-boss and main boss will absorb fire magic and are challenging.

I finished the story and am up to level 86 now. I need to farm AP bad. Finished all the legendary weapon quests. Only two hunts left, the daemon wall and the stupid gigantoad that only appears in the rain. Want to get my levels and AP up more before going into the extra dungeons.

If you are missing a dungeon, it could be Daurell. You don't go there organically and no hunts lead you there (at least none of mine have and I'm midway through lvl 9 hunter).
There are two hunts with frog or toad battles in the daytime and rainy weather and it only every seems to rain when I'm doing other things. I was fishing one night into the A.M. hours and it was raining. 6A.M. clear skies! Talk about aggravating.
The AP grind was horrible, I had to break them into chunks. If you shield of the just, there is an AP farming location that numbs the mind, but in an hour (real time) I got about 1600. Just to put AP into perspective; I finished all 8 of the extra dungeons with about 600 AP gained. If new game plus carried hunts over I'd be all for it, but I don't see any benefits from doing that.

Yeah Daurell was the last dungeon I needed. I sat around killing enemies waiting for it to rain for about 20 minutes on the frog hunt and it actually rained. So I cleared that off my list, and killed the Daemon Wall. So I am Hunter rank 10 now. I also finished the first of the sealed dungeons. It was long and I hated not having a map, but at my level it wasn't too difficult at all. Also got the Platinum trophy yesterday so that is nice.

Very cool brother! I finished my hunts up yesterday. While doing a frog hunt, I stumbled upon a treasure map piece. Thank god for YouTube, these are literally needles in a hey stack. I didn't want to play new game plus, but it seems like the only way to farm a few items. So, I think I'm going to do it.... I just hate seeing a bunch of question marks on the map, my OCD will not allow me to ignore them.

Just started this up a few minutes ago. I'm very impressed with the game world thus far. I can't really give a strong opinion on the story/characters just yet, but I'm liking what I see. I'm right at the beginning when the car breaks down. I've completed 2 of the hunts, and toyed around with the combat a little. So far it's a big adjustment to get used to how fights play out. So much going on at once, and I'm trying to get the hang of precise defending.

T R W they ever fix that chapter three patch you were always complaining about? That's literally the only reason I haven't put a ton of time into this yet.

I don't think they ever released a patch. Honestly, I think the complaints about it weren't a big deal. I went through it and it is long, but not overly difficult. It just kind of changes up how you play for a bit. I wouldn't wait. Who knows when it will be, and if it will make it better or not.

Mini work break starting tomorrow night. I know my plans.

Honestly if you play like me, and focus on side quests and exploring early on for a long time, you can do a ton and delay getting to chapter 13. Once you get to like Chapter 9 things start moving very quickly.

But I put in over 80 hours before I finished the story. Partly because I delayed finishing it to explore and do more. But my recommendation is to do most of that before or during Chapter 8. After that the story gets fairly linear until the end. You can go back later to do most things after finishing the story however.

Still on chapter one, running around doing hunts/exploring. I finally bit off more than I could chew in combat. I stumbled upon a huge monster near Hammerhead, and took a shot to see what my limits were. I knocked it over on my first hit, then it began KO'ing my party in one hit once it got up lol. Managed to get away before it wiped us all out.
I did manage to beat down a Cactuar before it wrecked us all with its needles attack. Got a ton of EXP for that one. The game is a lot of fun, despite me not going too deep. Really love the way the little rest areas look.

From what I understand the game switches from being largely open-world to linear in the last 3rd of the game. When is the point of no return? I'm in chapter 8 right now and still enjoying doing "side" missions and bounty hunting and exploring. At what chapter/mission does all of that become unavailable and switch to all-story, all-the-time?
