Now, I was listening to the podcast in the video above last week and there was interesting question posed that I thought I would share. In 2016 we have witnessed two career resurgences in two separate companies.
In WWE, we had Chris Jericho. He returned in January as a babyface and……..the results were mixed. He was still entertaining but as a face he seemed like he was spinning his wheels and the corny humor didn’t help. But then, during the AJ feud, he turned back to his villainous ways and it first was more of a serious heel.
But then shortly after the AJ feud, Jericho shifted into more of a chickencrapheel character. And it has been amazing to see this new character he created for himself. Let us count the nuances he has created for himself.
1. The List of Jericho 2. The Gift of Jericho 3. The word “It” 4. Stupid Idiot 5. Etc.
The guy created this list, which has become the most over thing on Raw. The Gift of Jericho is funny as hell. People chant Stupid Idiot. And the SOB even got the word “it” over. The guy went from a returning veteran to the best part of Raw week to week.
And then you have “Broken” Matt Hardy in TNA. Now, I don’t watch TNA week to week but I do make an attempt to watch his stuff. He started the years as the #1 heel with his own heel faction. He was fine but not anything we hadn’t seen before.
But then, as a result of being “injured” during a match with his brother Jeff, Matt’s mind became warped and Broken Matt Hardy was born. He died part of his hair blond, he began speaking with a strange accent, and all of a sudden began act like this strange, eccentric character.
And at first, I thought it was a joke. I mean, just look at this.
But, then we had The Final Deletion:
And it was instantly the most intriguing thing in wrestling in quite a while. It was campy, it was weird but God damn it was entertaining. And all of a sudden, Matt Freaking Hardy was the most talked about character in wrestling. He, like Jericho, has created many nuances to his character, including:
1. Brother Nero 2. His wife Rebecca 3. King Maxel 4. Senor Benjamin 5. Vanguard 1 6. “DELTE, DELETE, DELETE” 7. His Premonitions 8. And much more
Many people will laugh this off because of “LOL, TNA.” But, Matt Hardy of all people in 2016 has actually taken a company with zero buzz at one point and actually gotten people talking about the product which deserves praise.
Now for my answer, who has had the bigger resurgence?
Well, my opinions are practically identical to the video above. Look, Jericho has been great. But, he’s always had this ability in him. And he is a guy who is a multi time World Champion. Even now, if he challenged for the World Title, people would accept it. That’s how big of a star he is.
Matt Hardy on the other hand has never been been looked at as a true star in wrestling. I mean, he had one hot singles run in WWE that went nowhere and main evented in TNA but still wasn’t looked at as a star. But now in 2016, not only has Matt Hardy become one of the most talked about wrestlers of the year, regardless of company. But he’s been able to surpass his brother Jeff in popularity, which is something I never thought would happen. Jeff was looked at as a star. He’s been over for years now. And Matt since about 2008 has been looked at as the lesser Hardy.
But now, you have Matt taking this gimmick all over indies and even hear Delete chants in WWE. And it is a big testament to Matt to come up with all of these ideas and present them in such a unique way.
So my pick would be Matt Hardy. Don’t know how this will go considering there is much more WWE discussion here than TNA, but I’m interested to see what people think.

Unless Jericho ends up winning the Universal Title, I'd say this is Matt Hardy. This is literally the best work of Matt Hardy's career and he'll be remembered forever because of how unique it's been.
Jericho, while arguably the most entertaining part of a very bad show, still hasn't touched his 97-01 work imo, like not even close. I guess you can make the argument that Jericho's run is better because it's happening in WWE, which I wouldn't argue, but in a vacuum, character vs character, this is Hardy for me.

I say Hardy too
Jericho has been great but my all time favorite for him has got to be when WCW couldn't care less about what he was doing on Nitro. Paired with Ralphus. That was gold
I wish Bronen Matt would get me interested enough to actually watch TNA or keep up with them. But it isn't

I think Hardy has improved! Jericho is pretty entertaining tho! I was watching the beginning of Raw last week and him and KO were making me lol, even I am American, and they were insulting Americans!

I only seen one segment of Broken Matt but it seems dumb as hell.

Hardy, but only under the pretense that Jericho never needed a resurgence in the first place.

Matt Hardy. Jericho has always been entertaining. Hardy seemed to be fading until he became broken.

Lol both of these guys were being made fun of bad online.
Broken Matt Hardy was laughed at.
Overweight scarf returning poor in ring work Jericho was laughed at.
Both made wrestling fans flip their decision and hop on each bandwagon. Oh probably the greatest transformations i have seen and now all the fans who were whining arent there haha.
Shows you the vets may still knowwww

I would say Matt Hardy, because he changed everything about himself. And he got the internet talking about him again, but this time in a positive way.
Jericho was always gonna be a star, because he is still in WWE. So he was gonna be seen weekly, fans were still gonna cater to him. Matt didn't have that with being in TNA.
So Broken Matt Hardy is the man! He and Brother Nero are even coming to ROH to challenge the Young Bucks for the ROH Tag Titles.

Hard to pick. Jericho is brilliant at the moment with his list, stupid idiot etc and his delivery on the mike is spot on Hardy while I find some things a bit cringy still provides some good entertainment and has completely reinvented himself

I'm biased because Jericho is one of my favorites of all time. He is comedy gold right now. To me he has gotten slower in the ring but he can still go, as evidenced by his matches with Styles and Rollins. He and Rollins had a very good main event match a few weeks ago. This is by far his best work since leaving in 2010 after that great run. Hopefully he can stick around longer, or maybe just work part time. I know he's got some Fozzy stuff going on next year
I might be in the minority but the Broken Matt character does nothing for me. I will give him credit for totally committing to it though, constantly being in character. I'm just not much of a Matt Hardy fan.

Jericho is doing it where it matters.
So he wins this one.
I love me some Broken Matt though.

i'm not a fan of the broken matt stuff, but he's my choice. the guy was faking suicide attempts for attention only a few years ago, but somehow most seem to have forgotten/ignored this and he's been allowed to recreate himself. i don't think matt's had anything to contribute really to the wrestling business since v1.
jericho, while not being too consistent in the last few years, never floundered as badly as matt. jericho was just stale for a good chunks of time, which happens to most aging performers. i mean the guy is almost 50!

Jericho is doing it where it matters. So he wins this one. I love me some Broken Matt though. I mean, Broken Matt would never be allowed to happen in WWE. That's not a fair point.

I think Matt has had the bigger resurgence. While Jericho was kinda lackluster for a bit, he was still considered a top star in the biggest company before heating things up. I feel like Matt was barely relevant before the Broken stuff.

Broken Matt.
Jericho is doing some fun stuff, but Matt is doing some career defining stuff. It's simply... WONDERFUL!

Jericho's great but it's bad timing because he's damaging KO's title reign.

Matt because his career was so much lower going into this "resurgence" compared to Jericho who has been the same when he comes and goes with the WWE. But the Broken Matt gimmick would have never taken off in WWE cause they would have never ok'ed it.
