Anyone have the backstory on this angle? Perfect stole Helmsley's women, cost him matches, and even punched him out a few times. They advertised the match but then Perfect sides with Hunter. Didn't really make any sense, I was excited as a kid about Mr.P making a return to the ring. Not to long after he's wrestling in WCW.

The angle was set up as a ruse to get Hunter the IC title from Marc Mero. Pretty good angle actually.
The angle was then abruptly dropped after hunter got the title and perfect left again. I heard it had something to do with perfects insurance policy

I heard it had something to do with perfects insurance policy I know he wound up siding with HHH but the lead up made no sense if that was the plan the whole time. In a kayFabe world imagine HHH AND perfect coming up with this plan? "Hey Hunter, I'm gonna cost you a ton of matches, beat ya up a few times, then maybe one day you'll get an IC title shot and I'll help you win." He even went at it a little with 2 other heels in Goldust and Austin the night before at IYH Buried Alive.

Yeah I remember this angle quite well.....was a bit peculiar but Henning got an offer from WCW and Teds cash(quite understandably) lured him down to Atlanta.

Looking back on that angle, I wish Perfect actually did get back in the ring and had another run with the IC belt. That would of been ''Perfect''(no pun intended)

I remember this and I really thought they were setting up for a Mr. Perfect vs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley match at the Royal Rumble, or even Wrestlemania 13. There was such build up to it, and it was a mid card story line that is still remembered to this day.
But Perfect turning on Mero was a nice touch to help Hunter take the IC Title.

Wasn't a big WWF fan at the time, but the only "resolution" the angle seemed to have (and the only memory I have of this feud) is Triple H slamming one of those rolling carts into Perfect, and Perfect being gone from WWF. Didn't realize there was a whole angle with this.

"Hey Hunter, I'm gonna cost you a ton of matches, beat ya up a few times, then maybe one day you'll get an IC title shot and I'll help you win." He even went at it a little with 2 other heels in Goldust and Austin the night before at IYH Buried Alive. I thought it worked quite well, storyline wise. Look at it from the perspective of the storyline start to finish : - Mero wins the vacant IC Title . He's presented with the belt by Perfect, and gets his endorsement. - Around this time Perfect adopts a more face- like persona, and starts a war of words with Hunter. He also continues to endorse and praise Mero whenever possible. - While feuding with Hunter, it's established Perfect is friends with Mero, and is even advising him. - A match is booked between Hunter and Perfect, marking his big in ring return. - The night of the match, Perfect is attacked by Hunter backstage and " injured ". - Unable to wrestle, Perfect feels he let himself and his fans down. However, his good friend Mero volunteers to take his place, to help get revenge for his friend Perfect. He'll even put the IC Belt on the line so that Hunter will take the match. - Perfect turns on Mero during the match, helping Hunter win the title, and revealing they were in cahoots all along. . . . So to me, it wasn't so much that Hunter got lucky enough to get a title match. The plan was to play Mero to the point where he'd willingly give a title match to Hunter to defend the honor of his friend and mentor, even though Hunter didn't deserve one at that point. And Hunter was no threat, especially with Mero's "friend" backing him up. A bit complicated, yes, but I feel they hit all the points they needed to, playing on Mero's emotions to make the plan work.
