I'm not talking about his small 1996 run as being the manager of the Godwinns. I mean his final wrestling run?
in terms of PPV appearances I know his last was survivor series 1988 teaming with Hogan, Savage, Koko and Hercules - but the other day I was looking on youtube, and I saw promos of Hillbilly in the year 1990 saying how he's going to beat certain wrestlers in upcoming matches.
so when did he leave? I'm guessing something like the summer of 1990?

It was sometime in 90 I believe. I don't recall him wrestling in 91 and by 92 he was a part of the panel on Prime Time.

"Hillbilly Jim continued to appear regularly in WWF matches until the summer of 1990. His last high-profile match with the WWF was during the April 28, 1990 (taped April 23, 1990) edition of Saturday Night's Main Event, in which he lost to Earthquake in a squash match that lasted just under 2 minutes."

Yeah that's what I figured. I don't remember another TV match from him after that squash.

I know he blew out his knee really badly in 1985. Right before Wrestlemania actually. I remember in story line they blamed it on Brutus Beefcake, and when Hillbilly returned, he had Uncle Elmer with him, and those two feuded with Beefcake, Valentine and Johnny V.
Maybe when he blew out his knee it was really bad, and he never was the same when coming back?? That is possible. And he could have opted to stop wrestling in 1990 and just do an on air role.
Not saying this is a sure thing, but it wouldn't shock me if that was the case.

I'm surprised Hillbilly Jim is not in the HOF yet.

Running around the ring in San Diego, chasing Johnny V, and slipped on a wet spot on the floor. He was out for something like 9 months.

It's pretty cool that Hillbilly was able to stay with WWF for so long. He really was a representative for Coliseum Video. A friend of mine, who actually does not like wrestling, knew Hillbilly from working at a VHS distribution center in Maryland. Hillbilly would go to the center and promote the latest WWF Coliseum Video releases. He's a memorable character but as a wrestler he was limited and could only go so far. But WWF kept giving him various roles (almost like Superstar Billy Graham in 1988) and for Hillbilly, it worked out. He is one of those "legit" nice guys in wrestling.

Cheers for the info guys - yeah I thought it was around the summer of 1990 - shame his final PPV appearance was survivor series 88' - I would have loved to have seen Hillbilly be a participant in the following years royal rumbles 89' and 90'.

But no hof'er. Problem is anyone can just say Koko's in The WWE HOF isn't really a real HOF anyhow, its more a show on Wrestlemania weekend. Hillbilly Jim, and anyone else that hasn't burned a bridge with the WWE will eventually get into the HOF, because if they only take the best of the best, the HOF would have ended after 5 years!

Not the best of the best but it shouldn't be everyone but jobbers in. They should have only had 5 ppl a year. Koko was put in purely due to the fact they didnt have any minorites in that year.

Come on they put celebrities like Trump, Mr T and Pete Rose in the HOF so therefore Hillbilly Jim should be a candidate. As soon as they started adding these celebrities the WWE HOF lost all credibility of being the best of the best in wrestling. His career in the WWE was way more relevant than anything they did in the WWE.
