Just got done watching Nitro 5/20. Flair joined Bischoff and Heenan on commentary to fill in for Mongo and ended up monopolizing a lot of the time. Heenan was all but silent for the last 10 minutes or so while Flair prattled on. Eventually Heenan chimed in, but got interrupted by Flair, at which time Bobby says "Can I finish?" and Bischoff asks Bobby to finish his thought. Heenan says "No Ric is having fun let him talk" Flair then clammed up for the rest of the match while Bischoff seemed to be trying to moderate. Flair then sat quietly and left the booth before the show was over. Was kind of strange because Flair and Heenan were joking around and playing off each other only for them to be pissed with each other before the show was over.

Rambling on is nothing new with Flair. Imagine those nights in the clubs back in the day.

Flair is a great promo man, Flair is okay in the ring, but Flair as a colour commentator, no thank you!
On a side note, I never really minded Mongo doing commentary on Nitro. I thought he did okay, I don't think he sucked, and he kept the shows interesting at least.

He had great matches with guys who could get great matches out of him, like Steamboat. Otherwise it was the same match over and over. Absolute gold on the mic though, so long as he's not calling a match. I just finished Mongo's tenure as a commentator. I'm kind of tired of him, but I give him a lot of credit for being an outsider who really seemed enthusiastic about the product and having a good enough working knowledge of wrestling so as not to embarrass himself or the company.

Every single wrestler that's worth a ticket is like this. That's the whole show. Bret Hart, Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, Ultimate Warrior, Dusty Rhodes, Shawn Michaels, they all do the same shtick. For ever Flair flop, top rope spot, chest chop that Flair did, there was an atomic drop, clothesline, middle rope elbow, turnbuckle bump from Hart.

Yes, most wrestlers I can think of have their signature spots that we look forward to. When Flair is calling the match, it's nothing but those same timeworn spots back to back. It's a different approach to working a match. Flair put no forethought into his matches and just called the same spots in the ring for decades, whereas a guy like Savage planned out every intricate detail beforehand.

Everyone has their set of moves that they do in every match... What's the saying? If it ain't broke... Don't fix it. Hogan, Flair, Sting, Warrior, Piper, Bret, Austin, HBK and anyone else in the HoF got there with that mentally.

to give flair a bit of credit, during the territory days people wouldn't see all of your big matches in a year's time so you COULD reuse spots and have your set routine. did he evolve well to the weekly tv age? maybe not, but by that time it had become a parody of itself and i think he's always recognized that - it shows in that whenever he had a 'big' match he would step things back up.
you can't compare his matches with terry funk, to barry windham, to steamboat. steamboat to flair, sure, but they were repackaging the same feud there anyways..

Yep, exactly. He recycled promos in the same way back in the 80's. I mean, it would be a ridiculous endeavor to have to give as many promos as he did back in the 80's and make each one unique. I don't blame him for that. I just say that it was boring as hell to me that that he didn't evolve his wrestling game for the 90's Monday night era. His promos were gold in the 90's though.

It's hard to say what transpired on that particular evening, but Bobby has never made it a secret that he was unhappy in WCW. Likewise, Ric Flair's alcohol consumption and erratic behavior has been well known for years. One or both of those might have factored into the broadcast.

Bret and HBK and others had spots they built to usually, but you surely can't say they had the same match with every opponent. Flair did the same moves, the same spots, every time! His opponent was the only person who brought something different to the table. Yes, Hogan and Warrior were the same way, but they are not considered as one of the best wrestlers ever. Flair as a promo guy: one of the best. As an in ring performer: meh
