I've read several times that Gorilla Monsoon was voted the worst wrestling announcer 6 years straight by readers of the Wrestling Observer newsletter. Anyone know why that would have been?
I always loved Gorilla, though there were times where he pissed me off, such as his unabashed Hogan ass-kissing and talking about Flair in '91 like he was an overrated scrub and the NWA title like it was insignificant.

For the life of me I don't know why he was voted the worst for all those years. IMO he is the best of all time.
As for who voted him the worst.....''Will they be serious!!!''

He's never been my favorite, but he's far from the worst of all time.

He was gold with Jessie Ventura from 1983-ish til around 1989 or so. Then he started to transition more as the straight man to Bobby Heenan's antics. He lost some of the objectivity and knowledge he used to display to become more of a shill for the fac so to counter Heenan, and Ventura to a degree. But that was the way Vince wanted it - you had face announcers and heel announcers, rarely with middle ground.

I can't believe he was voted worst. He was THE best! Especially calling the MSG house shows. Maybe the WON readers got him confused with Lord Alfred.

Ha ha ha ha!!!
For real?!?! That is just ridiculous.
Gino Monsoon to this day still gets talked about in high regards for his play by play so I wouldn't classify him as the worst ever at it.

I read that it might have had to do with a lot of smarks voting in those polls, and Gorilla might have had some heat with the boys for crapping on them in commentary. For example, apparently there was a mandate at one point that wrestlers were not to hook a leg until the fall that would end the match, and in spite of this Gorilla would comment on how they were stupid for not hooking the leg when they had no choice in the matter, thereby making the talent look foolish for something they couldn't help. If that's the case, I don't know how even the smarkiest fans in the late 80's and early 90's would have known about all that, so it might be BS.

he is one of the greatest of all time - he fit the wwe family product to an absolute t in the 80s and early 90s. his work with venture and heenan is on a level of it's own at times. he was authentic - you could tell he was a genuine gentleman despite being a gorilla of a man.
i loved how he claimed that heels had paid the fans who were holding signs opposing hogan or supporting heels. great stuff.
he was also a damn good wrestler for his size.

Anybody discrediting the commentating legacy of Gorilla Monsoon deserves a shot right in the external occipital protuberance.

I always enjoyed listening to Gorilla Monsoon - him and Bobby were just fantastic, what a double act. The likes of Michael Cole and Byron Saxton cannot hold a candle to Monsoon and Heenan.

I personally loved him but he certainly had his flaws. He's very comforting to listen to!
One of my favourite cock ups on commentary is in the 1993 Royal Rumble when Carlos Colon hits the ring and Gorilla announces: "A lot of fire in this youngster!" Colon was 45 at the time. God bless you Gorilla!
