Alright, so Warrior was never a great wrestler, but for some reason in '96 it stands out even more to me. Is it because Warrior got worse, or because the average WWF worker was just better in the ring than the average '87-'92 worker? Those clotheslines couldn't knock over a grandmother with a walker. It was rare to even see him go for the press slam.
In spite of his weaknesses, Warrior was at least always good for drama and theatrics, but his '96 matches were uninspired squashes. I wonder if this was done with the intention of building him up to title contention again, or if the idea was just to use Warrior as a popular midcard attraction and give him a vehicle to promote his comic/wrestling school or whatever it was.

His run was just a cluster. A squash vs a not yet over Hunter, a PPV match with Goldust that never really happened, a bizarre feud with Lawler, then the promise of being part of the trifecta of top faces with Ahmed Johnson and HBK that ends abruptly when he leaves. He didn't really seem to fit in with the newer talent there, and he gave the impression overall of just being in it for the check. Or at least that's how it felt to me.

His 96 run was a joke along with his WCW run

I get why Vince wanted Warrior back in 1996. But he really didn't fit in with that whole "New Generation" vibe that the WWE had going there.
Vince should have just used Warrior during that time for special attractions. Putting him on live events and Raw episodes was a mistake.

The in ring work in 96 started to improve rapidly and sadly it made Warrior stand out.

If Warrior stayed, I wonder what changes they would of made to his character during the Attitude Era.

If Warrior stayed, I wonder what changes they would of made to his character during the Attitude Era. There were already some pretty significant changes in '96. His promos were actually pretty strong, more restrained, and contained profanity. Plus, he had the tattoo, smoked a cigar, wore a ball cap, etc. Other than the actual wrestling aspect, he seemed to fit in just fine, if not be a little bit ahead of the times.

I always wanted to see a heel Warrior in the WWF. With the changes you mentioned they could of easily pulled it off and had him feud with Michaels for the belt.

The promos would be off the charts.

i feel that having 'the body' didn't matter nearly as much any more after the wrestling scandals, and on top of that wrestling fans had developed a taste for quality main event wrestlers with runs from michaels and bret hart and the general main event scene developing around that time. so, yeah, i think a part of it is that wrestling had moved past the cartoon aspect.

I remember being excited to see Warrior returning at WM12....but then I was like....Meh. I ahd no interest in seeing him feud with ANYONE on the roster aside from MAYBE Vader.
I dunno it was weird. Ditto for WCW....

It was rare to even see him go for the press slam. Warrior stated that he stopped using steroids in '91, and he was visibly smaller when he returned at WM 8 and again in '96. That might have made some of his power moves more difficult to perform, and diminished his energy level. I'm only speculating here, but he might have been aware of his reputation as an unnecessarily stiff worker by 1996, and perhaps he was taking precautions to not injure anyone. I've always gotten the impression that Warrior's passion for the biz faded a little after his title run. From his interviews, it seems like he had other areas that he wanted to explore while Vince & Co. were viewing him as the centerpiece of the company for years to come. Several wrestlers have stated that Warrior disliked the rigorous WWF travel schedule, which is understandable, and he might well have felt that working a limited number of dates in an ultra-safe manner was in his best interest by '96.

They were also promoting his comic and a wrestling school or something that was all his personal endeavors. So it seems to me that Vince brought Warrior back because they needed some star power, and Warrior maybe only came back as a platform to promote his shit. His performances did seem uninspired.

The only trouble was, the guy was so unreliable, you never knew if he was going to pull a no-show, and not turn up for a certain event.

I think Warrior's incredibly brief in 1996 is regarded unfairly. Was it incredibly brief? Yes. Did it live up to what it could have been? No. Could it have been a lot better? Yes.
But I don't think it's one of the worst runs in the history of WWE, like some people regard it as. It was just too short to be anything substantial. He came back and squashed Hunter Hearst Helmsley at WrestleMania 12, which made him look awesome. Incredibly brief feuds with Goldust and Jerry Lawler, a few RAW matches, but that was it.
It's just a real shame that Warrior and WWF had these disputes during that time which caused him to miss house shows and ultimately got him fired. Because his 1996 run could have grown into something amazing. I just really wish we could have seen how the Ultimate Warrior could have developed to adapt to the Attitude Era. As someone else has mentioned, he had already made multiple changes to his character in order to adapt to 1996, which I feel worked rather well (minus perhaps the hat, but not a big deal).

It wasn't a good run. But I do take some pleasure in seeing him squash HHH at WM12!

Dude was a sht wrestler pretty much his whole career so I assume it was just to milk the popularity of him for what they could. Warrior was always over no matter how much his matches sucked.
