Am I the only one who really enjoyed this pairing of Jannetty and Al "Leif Cassidy" Snow?
Jannetty was an exciting and innovative worker, while Snow was loaded with personality. They seemed to have a lot of potential, so I'm wondering why they're curtain jerking while less interesting teams like the Smokin' Gunns, the Godwinns and Bodydonnas are dominating the title scene. Maybe the fans just didn't "get" the New Rockers. They were perhaps a bit ahead of their time.

I just think the fans saw it as nothing more than a second-rate rehash. I think Al Snow is a solid performer who went on to have a nice career and Marty Jannetty is one of the most talented performers of his era, but the New Rockers were just lame. Nobody cared.
The New Foundation. Smash & Crush. Animal & Droz. All attempts to resurrect an older established brand that flopped.

I liked them, but I love Al Snow and Marty was my favorite of the OG Rockers, so I'm somewhat biased.

I thought they were a solid tag team during a time where the WWF tag scene was less than stellar. Like EvilDoink said though those rehash tag teams never work out.

I disagree that they were a rehash, and it seems to me that anyone who would say this didn't really understand the gimmick. The New Rockers were sort of like an inside joke - a parody of the originals. If they were lame, it's because that's what they were going for. Eventually, they just became straight up heels, which distanced them even further from being rehashes of the originals. That aside, they were a fun and innovative team to watch, which put them above just about the whole WWF tag division at that time.

Al Snow stated in his shoot interview that Marty was re-hired thanks to Shawn Michaels in 1995. Both Marty and Al Snow came in at the same time, after the Smoky Mountain Wrestling Super Bowl of Wrestling event that HBK, Al and Marty were on. So HBK went to Vince and said, "you gotta get Marty back in!" So Vince brought Marty back and he wanted to be different than a Rocker still. But HBK told Vince, "Marty really wants to keep this Rocker thing going, so get him a partner." Thus finally going with Al Snow.
Marty was legit pissed about this and went up to Shawn and confronted him about it, and Shawn was all, "I thought you would like this still?? You being a Rocker with Al." But Marty was not happy and by November 1996 gave his notice and left the WWE.

While Snow is busy heeling it up and being obnoxious, Marty still seems to be really serious about it. I just took it as Marty was playing the straight man on the comedy team, but now it's clear he just hated the gig. I just recently watched a match from May or June of '96 on Raw where Snow is pretending he's angry at the opponent and going "hold me back Marty!" and Marty is just standing there ignoring him. |

Between Marty and Shawn, I see Marty as being the more innovative in-ring performer and better offensive wrestler. Shawn was the more charismatic, better at selling and storytelling, which ultimately are the more advantageous attributes for a wrestler.

Let me where camouflage pants and face paint to go undetected, but I'll take that shirt with the big yellow WWF logo in an XL. Poor, Barry. |

If they would have given Marty and Al a different gimmick and tag name, they could have made something out of it. Eh, Marty was a problem no matter what, and he always thought he was on the same level of Michaels.

It was the 90s, rockers and hair metal were the laughing stock (Raven was in, Ricky Morton was out), the gimmick was meant to be a joke.

Al Snow in ECW and WWF in the late 90s was better than anything I can see coming out of the New Rockers.
