It all started with a Nash promo.
Liver spot. Dog spot. My spot.

Pretty much any Young Bucks match.
It's generally cast in a negative light due to a lack of selling or psychology in the match.

A match w many high spots but not any depth to the psychology and lacking realistic or appropriate selling.

A "Spot" is a planned move or set of moves. "High spots" are more exciting things like diving off of something, breaking a table, flipping, etc.
A "Spot fest" would be a match mostly being pre planned full of spots and just racing around trying to do them all regardless of how the crowd is reacting or the opponent should be selling. Sometimes guys will continue to repeat a botched or messed up spot and totally throw the flow of the match off just because they wanted to get their stuff in.
Its become a common expectation of indy matches. The whole Rip Rogers/Randy Orton twtter post was about this. Basically wrestling has started to move towards exciting athletic performance, when it used to be telling the story of a dispute and settling it in the ring. Personally I enjoy high spots and athleticism as much as the next guy, but I enjoy compelling storytelling more. Theyre not telling a story or building momentum with a spotfest, theyre just showing off their sick acrobatics to sell tshirts. Which again is fine, its just not all wrestling is about.

As much as I enjoy the hell out of them, any match from PWG is what I would consider a spot fest. Move after move after move, with no psychology in-between.

For some reason reading it like that made me think of applying spot fests to other forms of entertainment. It'd be like watching an episode of The Walking Dead, and the entire 45 minutes is just Walker kills but not simple using Rick's gun, Michonne's sword or Daryl's crossbow. Every kill involves slamming their heads with car doors, running them over, using old explosives to take out a large crowd, if you've seen Season Seven using the wire between the two cars to take out hundreds, locking them inside a building and either blowing it up or collapsing it. I don't know why I thought that but I guess it's the same thing. Spot fests when done in the right setting are cool as hell, Lucha Underground where it's gods and monsters fighting no issue with it. But indy's where everyone looks the same and has no originality, ehhhh.

Pretty much watch any Indy match. well, that's just ignorant to say. considering bryan danielson was considered the best in the world far before he came to wwe, and he had never been featured in a spotfest match, maybe you should educate yourself a bit more thoroughly. anyways, spot fests originated in lucha wrestling and have consistently had a place there since mexican wrestling generally follows far looser in ring psychology.

A spot is usual a "big bump" ie jumping off a cage/ladder/table or its a fast paced sequence of moves/strikes with little no no selling, I dont dislike spot fest matches especially between old timers or guys who just dont have chemisty, it hides the fact that the actual wrestling chemisty factor isnt there. So a spot fest is just a match that is one spot after another, with little selling or story telling between spots.
Say what you want about a spot fest, I've never heard a lot of people booing a spot match in a live arena, I've heard plenty of people boo a "proper wrestling" match that consist of sleeper holds, long spells laying on the floor "selling"

I love spot fests. Some people act like they sit with a pen and paper and analyze the Match. I don't care about science when I'm watching wrestling. I'm too busy being entertained

Orton is boring. Owens makes them fun because he trash talks the opponent and berates the crowd. Or Bryan Kendrick. It needs to be a work hold adding to the match/story and not just a 5 min nap for Princess Orton....

If you just go through the motions of course it's going to look like crap. You have to put the hold on make believe you're trying to get the guy to actually pass out. Not just slap your arm around his head and sit there. That's just oversight, and little things like that, that can make a match that much better.

To be fair though, you brought up Bryan, who hadn't competed in the indys in almost a decade before his retirement. The scene has moved on since he left. It's by no means all spots fests, but they do want to sell something to put asses in the seats.
