That's hilarious, but not all that surprising. He was a touted baseball prospect and knowing how intense he was I'm sure that the competitiveness of a legitimate sport only amplified his "madness."
Savage wasn't about participation trophies, he wanted to be the best even as he got much older which is equal parts awesome and funny.
