Anyone else surprised that the WWE rushed this big-matchup in Cena vs Lashley so quickly at TGAB 2007? Cena was in the middle of his never ending reign, while Lashley was being pushed as the next big thing. It was clear that Lashley was being groomed to be the "1-B" to Cenas "1-A," yet this match seemed to come out of nowhere.
In hindsight it was the right move to rush it and have Cena go over, as he'd be injured shortly after and gone from the company within 6 months, but at the time it was mind blowing to me that the WWE rushed this potential future WM main event. Both guys had a ton of momentum, but to have Cena beat him clean seemed to be the wrong move at the time. It was a pretty good bout for two heavyweights, but had the potential to be so much more than it was.
Anyone else surprised at the timing of the match and how Cena went over clean?

Lashley sucked and was boring but that was possibly his best ever match. I found the whole thing pretty strange because for months Lashley was on fire but suddenly he gets put in a match with Cena and then he's never seen again.

I remember watching the match and thinking, "Wow! This is actually quite good!"
That was just a very strange time frame for the WWE in general. Benoit just did what he did, Edge just got injured, Taker was out, Angle had left the company a year earlier, Orton was always on the fence because of his behavior and testing positives for substances, new talent was JUST coming in like Cody Rhodes who wasn't yet established, so I guess when you got one guy that is hot as Lashley at the time, and you have your dependable Cena, why not put them together for a main event match??
It's quite possible they would have had a rematch later on with Lashley getting the win back.

I found the whole thing pretty strange because for months Lashley was on fire but suddenly he gets put in a match with Cena and then he's never seen again. The rumor was that he was penciled in to win the Rumble in '08 and face Orton at WM. Then supposedly plans changed, likely due to Cena being able to return so quickly, and he ended up asking for his release due to issues with creative and frustration over Kristal being released. He also supposedly had problems with Michael Hayes.
