I had this PPV recorded off TV and watched it religiously.
It had potential to be great, but ended up being 'just okay' for a PPV.
If Steiners beat Money Inc. to retain the Tag Titles, Perfect beat HBK to win the IC Title and Luger beat Yoko to win the WWE Title, then the PPV would have been perfect.
Instead we got the Steiners vs. Heavenly Bodies - which was a pretty entertaining match. But it seemed that whole summer we had the Steiners vs. Money Inc. feud. Instead we got that blow off in a cage a week before SummerSlam on the USA Network SummerSlam Spectacular special.
Perfect not winning the IC Title sucked. And Lex Luger not winning the WWE Title was even worse.
We got IRS over the 123 Kid and Razor over Ted DiBiase.
Borga over Jannetty in a squash, and Tatanka/Gunns beating Bigelow/Headshrinkers.
And of course the Undertaker vs. Giant match that was horrid.
Bret Hart vs. Doink was entertaining, and then he went right into wrestling The King, so that wasn't too bad. But it just seemed like that entire show seemed mixed up.
To this day, I feel that it was because of the Hogan vs. Bret talk for that show, and since it didn't happen, Vince had to scramble stuff around that summer.
It was also the event where Joe Fowler debuted as a backstage announcer. That didn't last night. I guess that's what happens when "Mean" Gene walks away and goes to WCW.
But over all, I do like this event, and I have fond memories of it.

I still have this on CHV. Not a bad SSlam but nowhere near my favorite list. My thoughts...
Razor Ramon over Ted Dibiase- Razor just turned face and Dibiase was pretty much done after this. No surprise who won. Ok opener
Steiners vs The Bodies for the WWF Tag Titles- Not a bad tag match here but this should've been Steiners/Money Inc. in the blowoff.
HBK vs Mr. Perfect for IC Title- A match that had classic written all over turned out to be below average. These two just didn't click at all and it showed. I gotta mention HBK was actually a little fat here as well which also contributed to the match not delivering. He would be suspended not long after this.
IRS vs 123 Kid- A nothing special 5 minute match.
Bret Hart vs Jerry Lawler/Doink- The best feud of 93 in the WWF IMO. King was on fire as a heel. The match with Doink and Bret was actual decent for what it was. Post match stuff was very well done. Just a great feud overall.
Ludvig Borga vs Marty Jannetty- Squash. I liked Borga it's a shame he got hurt so early in his run. He definitely had top potential IMO.
Undertaker vs Giant Gonzales in a ''RIP'' match. Just as bad as their WM 9 match if not worst. The Gonzales face turn post match went nowhere as he left not long after. Let's move on...
Tatanka/Gunns vs Bigelow/Headshrinkers- A standard 6 man tag with the face team winning. Pretty much filler.
Yokozuna vs Lex Luger for the WWF Title- They built this feud up all Summer and when the match happens Luger wins!!!....by countout. IMO that killed his main event run cold. He could never quite recover from this. And man for a guy near 600s lbs Yoko could move. I enjoyed his run as champion
Joe Fowler ughhhhhh. He actually replaced Mean Gene on All American briefly after this. He was bland as hell and had no personality whatsoever. No wonder he was gone by the end of the year.

SUMMERSLAM 1993Razor Ramon vs "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase- Nothing special from this one. Good match but standard stuff. I'm not sure about how the move goes usually but Razor lands on his knees before Dibiase lands at all on the Razors Edge. Maybe just the way camera shot it made me catch it. World Tag Team Championship The Steiners vs The Heavenly Bodies-Was the name Heavenly Bodies a joke on Del Ray and Pritchard? Really good. Do you expect anything less from the Steiners? Jim Cornette freaks out at one point when the Steiners kick out or reverse something, Bobby Heenan makes a quip about Cornette having an aneurysm , Vince basically says he hoped Cornette did have one. Classy guy that Vince is. Intercontinental Championship Shawn Michaels vs Mr. Perfect- Diesels at ringside and looks like a roadie for the Village People. HBK gets a pretty good pop for a heel. HBK goes for either a clothesline, axe handle or cross body off the top, but Perfect counters with a beautiful seamless arm drag to a mid air HBK. Great match. Irwin R. Schyster vs The 1-2-3 Kid- Poor X-Pac. Baby face, generic outfit, crap name, skinny as a pole. Good lord. IRS has crazy eyes a few times. Weird seeing zero resemblance between Rotunda and his kids. Bret "Hit Man" Hart vs. Doink- So you know that the original Doink wasn't horrible in ring or just a comedy figure right? Doink puts Hart In a stump puller mere inches away from the ropes...yet Bret doesn't just stretch his arms out to grab the rope...the best there is people. Joking don't get your undies in a bunch. Doinks theme is rather unsettling. Jerry "The King" Lawler vs Bret "Hit Man" Hart-Lawler faked a knee injury to get out of the first match, hence why Doink was in there. Fonzie throws the rule book out the window as both men use Jerry's crutch as a weapon. Mostly a brawl with a unique finish. Ludvig Borga vs Marty Jannetty- Well, this didn't suck. Borga reminds me a little of Vader. Marty's gear reeks of this era. Looked like he threw Tatankas and 123 Kids gear together. Rest in Peace Match Undertaker vs Giant Gonzalez-No Six-Man Tag Team Match Tatanka & The Smokin' Gunns vs The Headshrinkers & Bam Bam Bigelow- Good fun little ( well it want almost 12 mins. but still) match. Poor AF would have a heart attack as Bart gets the piss knocked out of him most of the time he's the legal man. Takes a triple standing headbutt at one point. Before that, Samu( or Fatu) went to toss Bart towards the other Samoan, so he could hit Bart. They f'ed it up as Bart almost doesn't go far enough. Tatankas Hulk up spot is interrupted by Bigelow hitting a enzugiri, looked great. WWE Championship Match Lex Luger vs Yokozuna- Recap, Luger slammed Yoko on the Fourth of July on a navy ship, Lex started a cross country promo tour in a red, white and blue bus called the Lex Express. Before this match Macho Man comes down with some singer, Machos in a red, white and blue jumpsuit and the singer is waving a giant American flag and hands it to Mach before singing the Anthem, I think. Yoko comes out first then Mach introduces Lex, whose wearing his USA striped gear, waving two little flags...So naturally the match ends in a count out. Luger kicks out of a leg drop at one point and the crowd goes bonkers.

Not very good at analysing match by match but here's a few of my thoughts:
I remember at the time being excited about the IRS V 123 Kid match. I always had a soft spot for jobbers and the Kids' win over Razor really got me excited for him. I never thought much of IRS so was hugely disappointed when he won this match.
Ludvig Borga v Marty Jannetty- thought the Borga character was pretty good. I always viewed Wretlemania as the ultimate event so wasn't bothered about the squash element of this match. A good way to push Borga against a name opponent
Bret Hart v Doink/Jerry Lawler - two great matches and a great storyline with Lawlers "accident". Highly entertaining?
Lex Luger v Yokozuna - bit of a letdown in the end with the count out finish. In hindsight, the worst part of this storyline is that there was no ultimate pay off IMO. Not that I'm a Luger fan in any shape or form, but with the one shot only stipulation and the chance of getting another if he won the rumble, it could have been a fantastic storyline from start to finish, butjust felt a bit flat he never got the gold in the end.

This is not one of my favorite PPV's, but I do think the shift Bret Hart put in here is one of his more underrated. I swear you could literally ask Brek Hart to wrestle five times a night and he would have made it work.
I thought the whole stars and stripes theme of the PPV was pretty cool, but like everyone else on the planet, the ending was dumb, like really, really dumb! Luger looked like such a moron celebrating the way that he did.

I always enjoyed Bret/Doink from this show. I still say Doink doesn't get enough credit for being awesome. He was legitimately in my top five performers that year (with Bret, Perfect and HBK). I also remember liking Steiners/Heavenly Bodies, but being disappointed in HBK/Perfect. Maybe I was expecting too much from them.

This was one of the first, of many, PPVs I ordered at the time. I was a kid and really enjoyed the show. I thought it was solid from top to bottom. Now, I still enjoy it but a few of the matches could've been changed and it be a little better. What confuses me to this day is the hotline segment where a fan asked Undertaker about the WM 8 match with Jake Roberts. Obviously Undertaker is all about the kayfabe even in 2017 so in 1993 he is completely in character. He just repeats "Jake" a few times and I swear he says "ice cream man" a few times, too.

This was just an okay show for me.
Razor/Dibiase was good. Never realized how old Dibiase was looking at this time.
Heavenly Bodies vs The Steiners was good. Wish Scott stayed like this.
HBK vs Perfect was just okay. On paper it should have been amazing, but something was off.
IRS vs Kidd was passable.
Bret vs Doink was pretty good. Doink/Borne was just an awesome character.
Bret vs Lawler was also pretty good. Should a more vicious side of Bret and it extended the story line for a few more months.
Ludvig Borga vs Jannetty happened.
Undertaker vs Gonzales was meh. And by "meh" I mean best match of Gonzales' career.
6 man tag was good.
Luger vs Yoko was exactly what you'd expect. This match went much longer than I would have thought. Still not sure what the point of all this was with the Lex Express only to have to show end like that. It made Luger look like a fool and his WWE career never recovered. If the plan was to wait till WM, they were wrong.

For people that say "Oh well SummerSlam 95 was the worst" I always point to this PPV. You paid twenty plus dollars for a pay per view that had two titles matches end in count outs, two squash matches, and two Bret Hart matches that ended in DQ. Sure Hitman had the matches won but they ended in DQ. Plus you got a Giant Gonzalez match.
Ted Dibiase Vs. Razor Ramon Ted is in terrible ring shape as you can tell that he is blown up less than half way into an eight minute match. This would be his last match as a performer for the WWF. He had requested time off prior to this match to fix his marriage. That is what he said in his book but it is interesting to point out that this pay per view took place on August 30th and he would be in All Japan wrestling a match on September 3rd so there is some dispute to his claims. He would join Mr. Perfect and Rick Rude in the Lloyd's of London Class of 94, cashing out on a policy and never wrestling again. Not really anything special but I did like the finished with the exposed turnbuckle into the Razor's Edge. The Razor's Edge is one of those moves that you really can't perform from out of nowhere so it's nice to see it in a match like this. It reminds me of the way Sid took the Tombstone at Mania 13 against Taker. Overall it's an ok match but nothing great.
The Steiners Vs. Heavenly Bodies This is the match of the night for me. The Bodies and Steiners put on a better match than what Money Inc and the Steiners could have put on so I actually like the call to end the Money Inc feud prior to SummerSlam. Plus with Ted leaving the company you don't have to saddle IRS with a loss. Huge pop from the crowd when Rick kicks out of a pin fall attempt after the Bodies used the tennis racket. Overall the four men did a great job. Really stole the show.
"He has done everything in his life backwards, why wouldn't he climb the ropes backwards?" - Bobby Heenan on Rick Steiner
Mr. Perfect Vs Shawn Michaels Historically and on paper this should have been the match to steal the show. It's just sloppy by the standards of Perfect and Michaels. At one point they botch what looks like a clothesline but neither man knows who should do it and it looks terrible. At one point Michaels put Mr. Perfect in an over the knee back breaker submission and it's sloppy and poorly executed as his knee is no where near Perfects back, more like his shoulders and neck. The brawl after the match in the back was so much better than anything they did in the match. This would be the last pay per view appearance for Mr. Perfect as an active wrestler in the WWF until 2002. He would cash out on his Lloyd's of London policy, like I mentioned before, in 94.
IRS Vs 1-2-3 Kid Squash match. The Kid got some high spots in but it's nothing special. When the match is over there is no crowd response the people in the crowd did not care one bit about this match.
"He knocked him so hard he hit three zits right off his cheek." - Bobby Heenan after IRS hits 1-2-3 Kid
Bret Hart Vs. Doink/Lawler Lawler was such a great heel and it really shows here. I loved Heel Doink and the match with Bret was good but not great. I hated how long Bret took to put the sharpshooter on, it was almost like he turned into Hulk Hogan and was just look around to the crowd like come off it. Bruce Hart didn't know that Doink was going to hit him with water which I find hilarious. This would be Matt Osbornes last pay per view for the WWF. He would eventually turn face as Doink but was eventually fired by the WWF. Matt Osborne claims that Bam Bam ratted him out for smoking pot because Bam Bam didn't like that the company was having him job to a clown. The heel clown was great though. So yeah Ted Dibiase, Mr. Perfect, and now Matt Osborne. Could there be another superstar who would never have a pay per view appearance after this on the same card? ...yes Giant Gonzalez.
Borga Vs. Marty Party Jannety Another squash match as they were building Borga up to go against Lex Lugar. Nothing really to this match.
The Undertaker Vs Giant Gonzalez Yep...Giant Gonzalez would wrestle one more match for the company after this and it was against Randy Savage.
Six Man Tag Second best match of the night in my opinion. All six men were working hard and really it looked like they knew this pay per view sucked and they wanted to save it but they just couldn't.
Lex Luger Vs Yokozuna So much has been said about this match and it's just incredible this story. Touring around the country to end up winning by count out and having balloons drop...it's incredible. The match was bad. I think it was Bruce Prichard that said that Lex was going to win up until maybe a week before the show and Vince just didn't want to take the belt of Yoko. He said that it was either because Yokozuna was still getting strong reactions whenever he went out and the other part being that he felt that the fans would get behind Lex even more in the build up to Mania X but by the time it rolled around Vince had cooled off on Luger.
It may not be the worst but it may be the worst.

Steiner's vs Heavenly Bodies and Borgas impressive win are the standouts for me. Was always a fan of RR and his face turn & subsequent victory over Ted was great stuff.
Luger vs Yokozuna.......so many conflicting reports on what happened here. Cornette's thoughts on it are priceless though...
But....why the damn balloons and Steiners/Macho etc hoisting him up? I dunno. Crazy booking after the buildup.

Don't forget, Fall Brawl shows used to be the September Clash of the Champions show too.
As for SummerSlam 93, I am just going through the WWF Superstars from 1993 and I just past September, and I still can't figure out why they didn't pull the trigger on Lex winning the WWE Title at SummerSlam. It just seemed that after that, everything fell flat.
Vince was hoping Luger vs. Borga would draw - it didn't.
The Undertaker vs. Yoko feud that was set the TV taping show after SummerSlam didn't work. And we had that horrible casket match with Taker at Rumble '94.
If Vince was relying on a Wrestlemania X blow off with Lex winning the Title that night off Yoko, he blew it big time. Fans seemed to go right back to Bret Hart after SummerSlam '93 as wanting Bret to be THE guy. And that's exactly what happened at Wrestlemania X too.

They seriously played the ''You were my hero'' music video ever week on SStars and Challenge prior to SSlam. It still boggles my mind after all that hype they didn't put the belt on em in the end. 24 years later and it still doesn't make sense.

My theory has always been that Vince wanted to drag this out until Mania X, but Luger lost momentum, Bret gained, and took over.
WWF lacked heels, so who would Luger feud with as Champ?
Yoko was the 1st heel champ Vince ever ran with for any length of time. Maybe he wanted to have a heel as champ with a face chasing for a change. For 40yrs, I think a Heel held the world title for maybe 500 days with the majority being Superstar's reign. (63-93) Vince Sr/Jr.
Luger/Yoko was still the primary story at Survivor Series.
We get a necessary UT/Yoko distraction at Rumble however:
Lex is still the dominant story. He has to win the Rumble to get one more shot. Odds/bounty stacked against him.
But then, one kick to Bret's knee and boom, he is now the fan favorite and has all the momentum.
By Mania, Bret is the obvious choice.
Problems with the theory are A) why if you wanted Luger as Champ inject Bret into it? Vince had to cool on Luger before RR changing the Mania plan or at least doubting Lex at this point.
B) Ludvig Borga. No challenger to Luger, besides Yoko, would be the biggest reason to keep the Belt on Yoko at SS and dragging it out. However, they had Borga. Lex wins belt @ss, followed by traditional Survivor series match, RR rematch with Yoko with Borga winning the Rumble. Borga/Luger Mania. This plan would've went to hell, but prior to SummerSlam it makes a lot of sense.
Basically, no idea why Luger didn't win the belt at SummerSlam 93.
