Hi guys
So my young son loves playing with his wrestling figures
However I have a problem with rings
I have the big blue cage play set ring which had warrior and rude bundled in. However it is a spring loaded ring and the noise it makes is tremendous and it's also on the small side. So spring loaded are out - too gimmicky
I don't like the rings with the break away middle section, makes play awkward and it's annoying the ring keep breaking
The full scale ring doesn't seem suitable for a young child as it seems too intricate and like there is too much to have to fiddle with
Hasbro and other brands just are not compatable with the Mattel line (which is the only line we collect along with hasbro)
So, which ring is the best for actual play? Is there a mattel solid state ring which isn't springy or fall apart, but doesn't have the cloth etc the full scale ring has

Mattel hasn't made a smaller non-spring ring, but Jakks have. I'd recommend looking into getting either the Attitude or Hardcore ring - they have the plastic base but no springs and regular decals for the ring aprons rather than fabric ones. The Attitude ring doubles as a carry case with the ring mat lifting upwards allowing for figures to be stored inside it while the Hardcore ring has an opening on one side for weapon storage under the ring. Other than those two features, they're essentially the same ring. I fully recommend it as a good mid way ring between the Spring Ring and the ASR! Hardcore Ring: Attitude Ring:

The attitude ring would be best if you don't want a ASR. That attitude ring is what I had as a child and if I didn't like the ASR ring for my setup; I would be using the Attitude rings over Mattel. The attitude ring is hard with no springs and I believe its a few inches wider than a Mattel basic ring. If you get one brand new it comes with a cage and catapults that I am sure your son would like.

I'd go with the spring ring, but you might want to try fixing your own cloth "canvas" over the hard plastic surface.
The plastic on these rings will collect a lot of paint from the figures as they collide with it, and a layer of cloth would help prevent this and still maintain the cool sound effect of the ring.
The ASR is probably too big and makes a pretty lame "thud" noise when figures are slammed on the mat.

Maybe just modify the spring ring. They are cheap(ish) so it is not an issue if you use glue/putty/whatever to block the spring loaded mechanism and associated noise. Obviously this does not solve the size issue but if your son is anything like I was with my Hasbro ring it will be pretty battered in short order anyway.
And congratulations on getting the HOF Warrior and Rude cage set, I think that is great for kids. He is a lucky lad.
That said assuming those rings are readily available and cost effective on auction sites @stuart? suggestions are great.

I got my Attitude ring with the cage and a few other bits and pieces for a great price last year. Just keep an eye out and search 'WWF ring' as that's what they'll most likely be listed under.

Even though it's technically not a Mattel ring, the ASR is the best. Plus due to the cloth mat and rubber turnbuckles you won't beat up your figures. I hate basic rings because it's all plastic and it chips the paint away from figures and damages them most of the time, on top of that they're not realistic at all.
You can get ASR for less than $70 which is a great value. You could wait for the new Main Event ring that comes with Goldberg if you want to shell out $100, but I wouldn't recommend it because it comes with basic ring posts and turnbuckles. The ASR is the way to go.

When i was younger i started with spring rings but always wanted realistic play so i got the Jakks official scale Elimination Chamber ring and it worked perfect, gives you plenty of space to do whatever you like such as ladder matches or even just a suplex without it all being crammed up. As mentioned by another user, the cloth mat and turnbuckles don't damage the figures and the noise isn't too loud like a plastic ring.

WWF Monster Ring. I've had that thing for like 20 years. It's still in decent shape.

It was great for it's time as it was the first customisable ring long before the first RSR. Closest thing we had to that was the Jakks Monster Ring (repainted LJN ring) and the posts on that were taller than the figures so it was immensely out of scale. It's a nostalgia thing for me as it was the first ring I ever owned when I was a kid.

My son has had an ASR since he was 5 and he's played with it a lot and it is great! Nothing has broken. Though I would recommend new tighter ropes from ringside and replace the mat if it has the clips that holds it down to one with the elastic band.

I personally rebuilt my Jakks Hardcore ring from when I was a kid. All I had was the base but I found parts between here and eBay and it's now the only ring I use.

My kid has played with the ASR since he was 5 as well. In fact, we just got the Extreme Rules apron in the mail from RSC today, since we were at the event back in June. Good stuff! Tell me more about the ringside ropes since these are so loose and floppy. (We are using the red, white, and blue set that came with the cage).

Think the newest one may just be the perfect scale.

The ringside exclusive ropes are tighter and work perfectly for me. You may initially think they are too tight but they are good. I got the red ones but at some point I'll be picking up black ones too

If it's cheap enough and you have the room go with the ASR. honestly I've had my ESR for about 5-6 years and my ASR for about 3-4 years and nothings broken and it's worth the investment compared to buying spring rings every year because in the end it comes up to about the same price.
