As old school as I am, I can't really say I miss kayfabe that much now.
Sure it was something special being a kid at the edge of my seat, biting my nails, and heart in my hand, to see if Ric Flair would get what was coming to him. But I've always love the business behind the scenes, and any glimpse into their world is special to me.
To see these guys off-character is awesome. I saw a Jimmy Garvin cam-held from the Bash tour in '88 I think, and seeing the Road Warriors acting silly was mind-boggling entertaining!
kayfabe - is it something you miss or do you like how open things are now?

I definitely miss kayfabe. I remember being invested in characters and angles because back then they made it believable. Bad guys were bad guys and good guys were good guys. You didn't have any of this social media crap showing 2 hated rivals going out and having a few drinks together.
So yeah I miss kayfabe. IMO wrestling will never be the same without it.

Do I miss kayfabe? Not really.
I view wrestling like any other form of entertainment. Knowing that faster than light or time travel is impossible doesn't lessen my enjoyment of Star Wars or Back to the Future. I know superheroes don't exist but I still enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers movies. I have serious doubts that the CIA and MI6 have spies who regularly do impossible heroics to save the world from megalomaniacal villains but I still enjoy a James Bond or Jason Bourne movie.
Knowing that match outcomes are predetermined and that wrestlers are normal people portraying characters like actors in a very physical soap opera doesn't take anything away from the product for me. All I ask is that they do a good job entertaining me. That includes the wrestlers with their promo and in ring work as well as the writers/bookers coming up with interesting and cohesive stories.
In other words, breaking kayfabe won't kill my interest but crappy writing and half ass phoned in performances sure as heck will.

The more lax wrestling has gotten with kayfabe and character protection, the less I've watched. I'm done to maybe buying the Wrestlemania Blu Ray if there's a match I want too see.
I won't tell you that the death of kayfabe is the biggest issue with wrestling, that would be over saturation and 50/50 booking. However, it doesn't help.
Now I know Hulk wasn't really lusting on Elizabeth, and Savage didn't really try to kill Steamboat with the ring bell, but the way they sold it allowed for me to get into the angle on a deeper level.
I miss wrestling shows being presented as sporting events, now they are cut and produced as TV series.... no thanks.
Finally, I'd like to point out that it's all a work right? So for the love of God work me! Dirtsheets and the internet Can only be blamed so much, if bookers wanted us in the dark, they would find ways.
Wrestling never figured out how to work around the things ruining Kayfabe. I'd use the internet! I'd take what people know and simply blur the lines of reality. I'd leak bs stories and get heat off of them. Just make it real to me again lol.
The most fun I've had this decade was with the summer of Punk and the subsequent reality angles that came about. In the back of my mind i knew the Punk vs HHH stuff was worked, but not in the middle of their segments!
I don't care what my right mind knows when the show is over, I hate seeing the shows over scripted and obviously fake. It's 2017, book an angle I can believe.

Here's a fun little kayfabe related story.
The guys in the WWE today wouldn't dream of pulling this off.

It depends on the situation. In wrestling sure I miss it. But as far as retired wrestlers at signings/ meet & greets and such not so much.

Great thread! Kayfabe is wrestling and the lack thereof it, is the very reason WWE sucks today!!!
The best 'superstar' on the roster at the moment is Heel Neville. Plays the role, is excellent in ring and on the mic. Doesn't break character on social media. Outstanding talent, who gets it.

Kayfabe made wrestling "real". There was a time though when you could break Kayfabe and it didnt hurt the business. Like after Magnum TA car wreck. Tully came out when Magnum came back and said something along the lines about how he was glad he was alive & well and that people had prayed for him....then went right back to kayfabe and beat up the ol cripple!
