All I know is every time he took a bump after the injury he'd grab the back of his head and neck.

As covered here? Austin was a better wrestler before the injury but his ability to perform was not hindered at all by that Piledriver.
Austin's timing & in ring awareness were absolutely spot on until the time of his retirement. He was an absolute machine that left it all in the ring EVERY night and Jesus he was such a convincing brawler and seller......absolute brilliance.
One of the greatest examples of this is the Kane/UT/Austin triple threat match that was really a handicap outing @ IYH: Breakdown. It was believable against the odds that Austin nearly survived against these 2 monsters and that's due to the abilities of the man inside the squared circle. Foley, Rock, HHH(who was often critical) HBK, Hart amongst others have all praised his practically robotic workrate and uncanny senses in the ring.
