I was listening to Tony Schavonie's podcast last night and his co-host said that if Nikita Koloff came along 10 years later he could have been Goldberg. I'm not sure I agree with that but it certainly is an interesting topic. I'd love to hear what you all think about it.

goldberg was a raw athlete. Nikita koloff, while a strong guy undoubtedly, didn’t have that raw finesse that made Goldberg such a legit badass.
I think Ron Simmons could have been something similar to Goldberg though.

Only in appearance. Nikita was solid for his time frame and an 80 favourite of mine but Goldberg was his own thing. Right time, right place

I have to disagree with you guys. I never thought Goldberg was anything special inside the ring. I always felt he was WCW attempt at a response to Stone Cold. Whereas I found Nikita to be far more believable inside the ring as a competitor and as a bad ass.

I always associated Goldberg with Warrior. Both guys work showed badly the longer the match went with exceptions being the guys who could carry em to a good match like Savage for Warrior and DDP for Goldberg.
Nikita like you said was more believable.

I was never a fan of Nikita, one match sticks in my head, the one where him and Flair had a match outside when Flair landed in the helicopter, the match sucked and Nikita was awful in it.

I don't think Nikita was ever really properly trained though was he?? I thought he just learned the basics and then was pushed to the moon in NWA because of his look.
As for his comparison to Goldberg, I can see it in a way. Both were big guys, who were very green, who had a real connection with the fans (either loved or hated) and was pushed really fast against main event stars.

I don't see the comparison to be honest.
Goldberg was like a refined and badass version of the Warrior.
Koloff was just a "Russian strongman" who didn't mince his words.
Only thing they had in common was their lack of pure wrestling ability..... :/

you have to listen to what Tony says with a grain of salt mate Why's that? And like I said in the original post, his co-host is the one who said it. Besides, this is really a matter of opinion anyway.

Neither was a technical wizard. Neither grew up wanting to be a wrestler. The both were limited. But no disrespect to Goldberg, Nikita was the man.
For damn near 30 years I fully 100% believed he was an actual Russian. When I first heard he wasn't I coudn't wrap my head around it. Then when I finally saw footage of him talking in his real voice I was like Bruce Willis at the end of the Sixth Sense. All the clues just came flooding my mind. I was in awe.

He definitely had that Russian accent down to a tee. Boris Zhukov was another guy who nailed the accent.

he was still a star in wcw when he suffered his career ending injury with Vader...which may or may not have been faked to collect his Lloyd’s of London insurance claim like so many did.

Liked both competitors but I always legit felt that Nikita was an absolute MONSTER. By the time Bill came along he was a monster in a different way....difficult to explain. Hmmmm

Im not a big fan of either of them. Goldberg was ok to watch though for me because it wasn’t gonna be a long match anyways.
