Based on your review, a friend and I decided to sit down and watch Great American Bash 91 last week. Even alcohol could not make any sense or enjoyment of the event. I have another request - WCW Uncensored 96. If for nothing else to see what you think of the MegaPowers vs The Alliance to End Hulkamania in a Doomsday Cage main event match. Nothing can save GAB 91 from the trash heap.
Oh boy the dreaded Doomsday Cage...This should be fun.

I agree this is one of the best summerslams of all time. The next one you're reviewing was great too. After 97 which one are you doing from 88-91? Being from Philly and it's my fav SSlam of all time I was gonna do 90 but since the event turns 30 this year I'm going to do 88 instead. Well I was hoping you'd do every summerslam from 88-91. I was just wondering which would be first after 97. Did you attend summerslam 90?

I won't do them all in a row since I have other requests but for instance I'll do SSlam 88 then Havoc 91 then SSlam 89 like that. Just to spread it out.
And no unfortunately I didn't attend SSlam 90.

I attended that show. Summerslam 1997. I was 10 years old and it was my first PPV. Kind of a special event for me and my brother as it was the last event we attended with our parents who passed away a few months later. I'll never forget that moment when Mick Foley lept off that cage into the muggy NJ air. That was my Snuka/Muraco moment.

It's crazy to think at the time people were like Mankind jumping off the cage was awesome and insane but little did we know what was in store just 10 months later.

It's crazy how wrestling can play a huge part in our lives and memories can stem from wrestling shows over the years. I remember right after Summerslam 97 my dad and I drove from Wildwood (our family vacation) to Atlantic City to go to RAW. It literally feels like yesterday. I remember the main event was Shawn and Triple H (for the first time) vs Undertaker and Mankind

SummerSlam 1997
Your hosts-Vince McMahon,Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler
Triple H vs Mankind in a steel cage match- Great way to kick off the show here. This is the continuation of the feud that started 2 months earlier at KOTR. One spot in the match that looked stiff as hell was when Chyna slammed the cage door right into Foley's head. No wonder his brain is mush today. The big spot of the match is when Mankind pulls a Jimmy Snuka circa 1983 and leaps onto HHH in a great tribute.Crowd popped big for it. Mankind wins after leaving the cage. Awesome cage match here and it was just the beginning between these two as they would have a memorable feud just a few years later. Post match Mankind turns into Dude Love in a little cool moment.
We get a segment with the then NJ Governor Christine Todd Whitman who gets presented with a belt by Gorilla Monsoon( this would be his last on air appearance until his final one at WM XV) Sgt. Slaughter would take over as Commish the next night on Raw.
Goldust vs Brian Pillman- Bad match here as Pillman just couldn't go any more after having that car accident over a year earlier. Goldie with the win here after Marlena hits Pillman with her purse. This feud would contine for the next 2 months but didn't have a conclusion because of Pillman's untimely death. Just imagine Pillman in 1998 WWF. Man must see TV right there.
LOD vs The Godwinns- Godwinns are newly turned heels here as Henry Godwinn blamed The LOD for breaking his neck the previous Spring. Basic brawling tag match here and a bad one at that. Road Warriors with the win after giving Henry a spike piledriver. LOD were on their last legs here but would win the belts in October in a brief and final reign.
Another filler segment up next as we see a few fans trying to win a million bucks by picking a key that opens a casket. Nobody wins. Only good thing here was watching Sunny. Moving on...
British Bulldog vs Ken Shamrock for the WWF European Title- If Bulldog loses he has to eat dog food. Bad 7 minute match here as Shamrock wasn't quite there yet as far as a wrestler goes but he would improve big time as we roll into 98. Bulldog retains after Shamrock is DQed for snapping on the refs. Post match is Shamrock really sells Hulk smash mode as he attacks more refs and chokes out Davey Boy in the process. The post stuff was better than the actual match.
Los Boricuas vs Disciples of Apocalypse- It was Savio Vega's faction against Crush's faction after both left the NOD not long before this. Boring match as you could tell the crowd could care less. Boricuas with the win after Ahmed Johnson(Nation member at the time) drops Chainz on the concrete allowing Miguel to get the pinfall.
Owen Hart vs Steve Austin for the WWF IC Title-Infamous match here as this was when Austin was nearly paralyzed after taking a botched piledriver. As for the match itself good stuff here as they clicked right off the bat. Austin with the win and the belt after rolling up Owen. I can only imagine what Vince was thinking at ringside when Austin was laying prone on the mat as Austin was clearly going to be the next mega star and it almost didn't happen here.Austin's career would never be the same after this but he would still go on to have a great run as the face of the company. Great match here scary botch aside. Post match refs help him out of the ring and you can tell he's out of it.
Undertaker vs Bret Hart for the WWF World Title with HBK as ref- longest match of the night here at 30 minutes. Slow start but once it got going the match really picked up. Bret with the win and his 5th World Title after Michaels accidently hits Taker with the chair. Bret was awesome as heel in 97 so I was glad they gave em one final run with the belt before his departure in November. HBK would turn heel soon after and feud with Taker which would lead to the infamous 1st HIAC match and debut of Kane. Good way to end the show here. The in-ring work was good and the drama really added to it.
Final thoughts- There is a lot of bad stuff here but the good stuff( Opener and last two title matches) keep this event from the trash heap. 98 one year later was way better but still this isn't on my worst SSlam list by any means. Final Verdict-Recommended
Next time on the classic reviews we'll take a trip into the chamber of horrors with Halloween Havoc 91!!

I enjoyed summerslam 97. I thought the whole show was mostly good. After Havoc 91, you should do summerslams 88, 89, 90, and 91 in that order.

I was re reading Foleys first book and I was on the chapter where he talked about Chyna slamming that cage into his head. He said that was one of the worst head shots he's ever taken. That's why I requested it(and thanks for reviewing, weasel) and I only really remember this PPV for 3 things-
.The cage match .Austin breaking his neck .Shamrock Reagan-smashing all the refs.
There were definitely more duds on this show that not.

After uncensored 96 can you do Hog Wild and the wcw Saturday Night show that aired right before it? Since Saturday Night was basically the hog wild pre-show you should do it in one post. Bobby Heenan seemed drunk at this show.

The object of the match was to put someone in a chair of torture. The real chair(s) of torture was what the people in the crowd were sitting on😀

Halloween Havoc 1991
Your hosts-Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone
We kick off the show with a video on Eric Bischoff outside as he greets the wrestlers coming into the building. The point of this comes when Barry Windham and Dustin Rhodes arrive in which The Enforcers (Arn Anderson and Larry Zybszko) then attack. They smash Windham's hand into the car door which takes him out. I believe he was legit hurt so this was their way of writing him off.
Cactus Jack/Vader/Abdullah the Butcher/Diamond Studd vs Sting/Steiners/El Gigante in a ''Chamber of Horrors''match-Oh joy it's this match. The way to win is you have to electrocute one of your opponents. Just a mess of a match here with pretty much all brawling. They have coffins at ringside in which random dudes pop out from time to time. The point of that I still don't get but hey it's WCW for ya. Sting is the current US Champ here but is wasted on this mess of a match. Go figure. Match ends when Abdullah is strapped into the chair with then Cactus ''accidently'' flipping the switch to ''electrocute'' him to give the babyfaces the win. Jeeze what can I can about this? Just an all around failure of a match that thank God they only used once. It still has to be seen at least once. I'll leave it at that.
PN News/Big Josh vs The Creatures-Another bad match here but that's to be expected. This was the only and only appearance of the Creatures. They were played by Joey Maggs and Johnny Rich if I remember correctly. Babyfaces with the win after a PN News plash. Moving on...
Terry Taylor vs Bobby Eaton-Now this is more like it. Great match here as both were always solid hands in the ring so no shock they would blend well together. Eaton with the win after his signature Alabama Jam leg drop off the top. Again excellent match that I highly enjoyed.
Johnny B. Badd vs Jimmy Garvin- Garvin tried but Badd was still green here. He would become better IMO over time but here he was far from it. Badd with the win after a left hook. Again nothing to write home about here.
Steve Austin vs Dustin Rhodes for the WCW TV Title- Very solid match here. I liked their match at Starrcade 1993 a little better but this was still great. They added drama here as the time was running out as you had the announcers putting over can Dustin win the belt. A draw ends this one. Even with the typical lame WCW finish it's still a great match. Track it down if you haven't seen it.
Bill Kazmaier vs Oz-This was the end of the failed Oz character here as he was pretty much squashed. Kaz puts Oz in the torture rack for the win. Oz would be repackaged as Vinnie Vegas while Bill Kazmaier would be pretty much be gone by early 92.
Van Hammer vs Doug Sommers- Quick squash match here. Hammer with the win after a sling shot suplex.
Brian Pillman vs Richard Morton for the WCW Light Heavyweight Title- Not a bad match here but it was tedious at times. Morton just wasn't good as a heel at all IMO and it showed. Pillman was his usually good self here but again the match was just average. Pillman with the top rope crossbody for the win and belt.
Tom Zenk vs Halloween Havoc Phantom- another quick squash here. Phantom with the win after a neckbreaker. Hmmm that finisher looks familiar. More on this later.
Enforcers vs The Patriots for the WCW Tag Titles- Terribly bland match here with it only being watchable because of the Enforcers. The Patriots are Firebreaker Chip and Todd Champion. At this time they were the US Tag Champs but they weren't on the line here. Awesome looking spinebuster by Double A ends this one.
Next up is the reveal of who this Halloween Phantom is. Paul E Dangerously and Madusa are here as well. Who is it? It's RICK RUDE!! He left the WWF just a year prior so this was his big debut here. Great reveal here as this was basically where the Dangerous Alliance group was born. Loved Rude's run in WCW. I liked how they made him a threat right out of the gate with him saying he's coming for the US Title. Good stuff here.
Lex Luger vs Ron Simmons for the WCW World Title in a 2/3 falls match- Decent main event here but nothing more. Simmons wins the 1st fall after a spinbuster. Fall 2 goes to Luger after Simmons is DQed for dumping Luger over the top(I always disliked that rule) Luger with the win in fall 3 after hitting a piledriver. Again decent main event here but that's about it. Luger would be gone from WCW by February after dropping the belt to Sting and Simmons would get his big moment the following Summer. DAMN!
Final Thoughts- I wont call this show a failure as some of the matches on here are quite good. If you want a good laugh check out the Chamber of Horrors match. This is definitely a middle of the road show. with that being said...Verdict-Mild Recommendation(just have the remote handy)
Next time on the Classic Reviews we head back to MSG for the 1st ever SSlam!!
Until next time...Stay Classic Humanoids

Havoc 91 is actually the first ever wcw ppv I saw. I enjoyed it for the most part. I'm glad they weren't stupid enough to do another Chamber of Horrors match.
