WCW Road Wild 1998
Your hosts-Tony Schiavone,Bobby Heenan,Mike Tenay
Meng vs Barbarian- Bad match here but it's only 5 minutes long. I was always a fan of the Faces of Fear so I was disappointed when WCW disbanded the team during this time. Meng ends this with his signature ''Tonga Death Grip''. Hugh Morrus comes in post match to attack Meng which then brings out Jim Duggan of all people for the save.
Public Enemy vs Disco Inferno/Alex Wright- Decent little brawl tag match here but the problem with it is it goes on too long. Big spot of the match is when Rocco Rock climbs the scaffold to drop an elbow on a prone Disco on a table for the win. Again nice little throwback to their ECW run but nothing more.
Raven vs Kanyon vs Saturn- Not a bad 3 way match here but I've seen way better. We keep the ECW theme going as there is a lot of outside brawling and weapons used here. Saturn with the win after hitting Raven with his Death Valley Driver. I really wish WCW did more with Saturn. I was always a fan.
Rey Mysterio Jr vs Psychosis for a shot at the CW Title- Very underwhelming match here. Rey was trying but for some reason they weren't clicking on this night like they did in ECW a few years before this. Rey with the win after the West Coast Pop. Watch Rey's match with Ultimo Dragon from this same event 2 years earlier if you really wanna see a good match. This match though undelivered big time IMO.
Stevie Ray vs Chavo Guerreo Jr. for the WCW TV Title- Stevie was the TV champ but Chavo stole the belt prior to this event. Just a squash match here with Stevie Ray picking up the win after his signature Slap Jack finisher.
Rick Steiner vs Scott Steiner- Finally we get this anticipated match that's been building since February and WCW pulls the ol' bait and switch. Scott gets out of the match by pretending like he's injured so the match is put off till Fall Brawl. Spolier- The feud goes on until WW3 in November! The fans here are pissed to say the least. Typical WCW move here.
Brian Adams vs Steve McMichael- As always with a Mongo match it's terrible. Mongo wins after a tombstone. Next...
Chris Jericho vs Juventud Guerrera for the WCW CW Title- Dean Malenko is ref here.Best match of the night by far and the whole card for that matter IMO. Jericho was just so awesome as a heel during this time. Juvy wins the belt here after a frakensteiner with some help from the iceman.
WCW vs NWO(white/black and red/black) Battle Royal- Complete throwaway match here. No way in hell Goldberg was losing here as they were pushing him hard during this time as World Champion. Goldberg eliminates The Giant to end it. Again what was the point in this?
DDP/Jay Leno Vs Hollywood Hogan/Eric Bischoff- Jay Leno in a wrestling match...Enough said. At one point Hogan actually had to SELL for em which is just ridiculous on so many levels. We could've got a World Title main event you know like how it should be but no egomania took over here yet again. Leno pins Bischoff after Kevin Eubanks(musician on Leno's show at the time) Diamond Cutters Easy E behind the refs back. Terrible match here but it's to be expected. Only positive I can say is Liz looked great in jeans.
Final Thoughts- Just terrible all around here minus the CW Title match which is the only match I can recommend from this turd of a show. Only other positive I can give is the set looked great. Shame they put a lot of effort in the set but not the actual Road Wild shows in general.Verdict-Avoid
Next up on the classic reviews we'll head to the Lone Star state for WWF's This Tuesday in Texas!
Until next time...Stay Classic Humanoids

Wow that looks like a card from the 80’s WWF. Looks like too many matches on it and looks like a lot of filler. Guess that was the downside to having a large roster.
Meng getting the win was cool. I was such a big fan of Haku in the Hogan era.
One of the major differences for me between Vince and Bischoff is Vince knew how to get the most out of the celebrity rub. No way should Jay Leno have been near the ring, let alone in the main event. I may be mistaken but these events were free entry so there is an outlay on a celebrity and no gate money. Just a complete waste of money. It’s crazy to think that people like Austin, Benoit, Jericho et al struggled to get to the top in WCW yet a talk show host and basketball stars have headlined PPV’s. It’s no wonder they went out of business

Exactly. Those last few years of WCW were so frustrating as a fan as they had so many great talent like Benoit,Jericho, Saturn etc. yet WCW just kept on pushing the same guys and brought in these celebrities. Next year they had Savage job to Dennis Rodman. Just so ridiculous.

I'm surprised you didn't think PE vs the Dancin fools was bad. Hogan selling for Leno was silly, but he did get him back after they lost. Then Goldberg came in and saved the day. Main event of this ppv should have been Hogan vs Goldberg II. I understand why they put the first match on Nitro, but they should have had a ppv rematch.

Goldberg/Hogan should've been on PPV in the 1st place. Not on a random episode on Nitro just to pop a rating.

That match was ecw on crack. Tuesday Night In Texas is next on the docket? Then after that summerslam 92? After that how about an old CHV? I say Smack Em Whack Em.

Im just catching up on these reviews, but overall you've done a great job. What kind of research do you do for these? Even though I have seen most of these multiple times, whenever I watch something I always catch myself googling all sorts of things throughout a show to catch up on backstories and aftermath. Ill eventually get to all of your WWF reviews as im not a big ECW guy and I really only watch wcw after '94. WrestleMania 4 - I agree with most of what you said. During the early days they kind of just threw everybody on the card kind of like today with the preshow and battle royal. It's crazy that they gave us 16 matches. I wish there would have been more substance with the tournament, since I love tournaments when done correctly. The first round had 4 matches under 5 minutes, and 2 over 10 with 1 being a time limit draw. I would have liked to have seen warrior and Hercules in the tournament instead of have a separate 1 on 1 match. Overall I have a soft spot for this Wrestlemania because its my first ever VHS purchase after spotting this at BJ's. It was the legacy box set version. I would have eliminated the Bulldogs vs. the Islanders and Warrior vs. Hercules (I know it was his first big feud but I would have just moved this match to the tournament I would have removed One Man Gang, Dino Bravo and Butch Reed. (Replace them with Warrior, Hercules, and King Harley Race) The first round matchups would have been Duggan - Dibiase (keep the same 5 min match) , Warrior - Hercules (have the same match they had) , Savage - Steamboat (rematch from the previous year) , Rick Rude - Greg Valentine (the fact that rude and Roberts had a time limit draw in the first round and valentine / gang both advanced is puzzling) , Roberts - Muracco , and King Harley Race - Bigelow. The Second Round would have been - Hogan - Andre (keep the same) , Dibiase - Warrior (warrior would get counted out b/c of virgil and andre) , Savage - Rude , Roberts - (either bigelow or Harley Race doesn't matter) Semi Finals- Dibiase gets the bye and Savage wins and keep everything else the same from here on out. I would also keep Demolition and Strike Force the way it was, and honky vs barber the exact same. Pretty Good WrestleMania otherwise, Vanna White and Uecker were really popular during this time so they fit right in, plus jesse the body was spot on the entire night. Great Review from Im a Bobby Heenan Guy, when I have more time ill catch up on the other WWF / E reviews. I know you have a long list but Summerslam 97 or 98 would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the kind words. As far as research goes, I pride myself on being a wrestling historian so majority of the time it all comes from my memory.
As far as your request goes,I'll do SSlam 98 since it's the 20 year anniversary this year. Thanks for reading!

This Tuesday in Texas
Your hosts-Gorilla Monson and Bobby Heenan
Bret Hart vs Skinner for the WWF IC Title- Barbarian was originally going to face Bret here but was pulled last second. Pretty good opener here considering this is a Skinner match. I'll go even further and say this is MOTN by far. Bret retains with his signature Sharpshooter. Check this underrated gem out.
Next up we get promos from Jake Roberts and Randy Savage before their showdown. Both gold as usual.
Randy Savage vs Jake ''the snake ''Roberts- The match itself is nothing to write home about as it's really short. Savage with the win after his flying elbow smash. Now we get to the meat of this stuff. Savage goes for the bell after the match but before he gets to use it gets a DDT for his trouble followed by a 2nd one. The crowd here is going insane which just adds to the awesome and realism they are going for here. Jake pulls out a black bag from under the ring and teases Savage with it until Liz comes down to plea with him to stop. Major props to Liz here as her selling of the whole situation is off the charts. Jake then grabs Liz by her hair and slaps her which was unheard of during this era. Jack Tunney comes out next to threaten Jake before he finally leaves. Just awesome stuff here and makes this whole show worth watching. To add it to this greatness we get a classic heel Jake promo on how it felt good slapping Liz. Must watch stuff here humanoids. I miss intense feuds like this. They made you believe these two were in a fight to the death feud and it worked to a tee.
British Bulldog vs Warlord-Decent power match here. Fun fact here:These two were paired up in some form or fashion at all PPV's during this year. Bulldog with the win after a crucifix pin. Again not bad at all but this is where the PPV goes downhill IMO.
Next up is a Randy Savage promo in which my God the intensity here is insane. I wish this feud never ended. It's that damn good.
Tito Santana/Virgil vs Ted DiBiase/Repo Man- Pure filler match here before we get to the main event. Repo hits Virgil with a knee to the back allowing DiBiase to get the pin to finally end their almost year long feud. I really liked the Repo Man character. ''What's mine is mine and what's yours....is mine too!!'' Classic.
Undertaker vs Hulk Hogan for the WWF World Title- Stemming from the controversy finish at SSeries just a week earlier here we are with the rematch. Pretty bad match here as it was overbooked to hell. Ric Flair interferes again like he did the previous week but in the end Hogan with the win after throwing ashes into the face of the Undertaker. Not long after this Jack ''on the take'' Tunney vacates the title after and puts it up in the Rumble the following month. Bad main event here.
Final Thoughts-The good outweighs the bad here IMO as you have a very good opener,The whole Jake/Randy angle which again is must see,and a decent power match between Bulldog/Warlord. Plus Monsoon/Heenan on commentary. That is more than enough to give this event a solid pass.Verdict-Recommended
Next time on the classic reviews we'll go to jolly ol' England for SSlam92!
Until next time...Stay Classic Humanoids

Since its summer and you already are reviewing one SummerSlam, can you add either SummerSlam 96or 97 to the list?
