Starting up SSeries 90. What did you humanoids think of Roddy Piper on commentary? At the time I just didn't think he was cut out for it but over time I grew fond of his run in the booth. SSlam 91 was gold with him and Heenan arguing back and forth. I wish Roddy would have been a lot more...calmer. lol It was Bruce Pritchards idea to put Roddy on commentary because he loved the way he did it back in the old NWA days with Gordon Solie. Too bad Roddy went off the rails and would just rant and scream. I think if Piper would have pulled back and been the heel we was in the mid 80s while doing color, that would have worked really well. It was difficult for Roddy to commend people like Hogan, etc since he was once one their most hated enemy. |

I think Brother Love talked about this on his podcast, I think he said it didn't go over as well as they thought it would so they dropped it. Survivor Series 1990 
Your Hosts- Gorilla Monsoon and Roddy Piper
The Perfect Team-Mr. Perfect and Demolition Ax,Smash and Crush vs The Warriors- Ultimate Warrior,Legion of Doom and Texas Tornado- The big feud in this match was between LOD and Demo after the Doomers cost em the belts at SSlam just a few months prior. Ax is the first one gone here after a just a few minutes from a Warrior splash. This would be Ax's last appearance in the company. You could tell on his facial expression coming down to the ring he couldn't wait to get this over with. We get a big brawl a few minutes later between LOD and Smash/Crush which leads to all 4 guys getting DQed. We are down to Warrior/Tornado against Mr. Perfect. After some exposed steel that Tornado hits his face on we get a follow up Perfect Plex and Tornado is outta there!! Just a month later Perfect would regain the IC belt after defeating Tornado with help from Ted DiBiase that would start a feud between the two that really went nowhere. Warrior wins it for his team after hitting his signature shoulder block and splash. Not the worst elimination match in events history but the ending was never in doubt. Demo by this point were on life support and it showed in this match. Points to Perfect though as you could tell he put effort into it.
The $ Team- Ted DiBiase, Greg Valentine(Box Car as Gorilla would call em) Honky Tonk Man and  vs The Dream Team-Dusty Rhodes. Koko B Ware and The Hart Foundation- The mystery partner is.....The Undertaker!! making his debut here along with manager for a short time Brother Love. Right off the bat the announcers put em over HUGE by mentioning his size and such. Taker puts his first soul to rest after not even 2 minutes when he hits the tombstone for the 1st time ever on Koko B Ware. Team Dusty get on the board few minutes later after Jim Neidhart powerslam HTM. HTM would be used mainly as a commentator on Superstars after this before leaving the company in early 91. The money team get revenge next as DiBiase eliminates Anvil next after Virgil distracts em leading to his downfall. Next elimination is Dusty after a little stretch after Taker hits em with an ax handle off the top rope. Rarely did you see big guys go to the top during these days so to say this was impressive would be an understatement. This next elimination is confusing as Taker tag outs to Dibiase but for some reason is counted out after going after Dusty in the aisle when he was trying to go after Brother Love. I can see why they did but still it was weird. We are down to DiBiase/Valentine against lone man Bret. Valentine gets the axe next after Bret rolls him in a small package. The last few minutes of this match are great as both Bret and Ted have a nice little match. They always had great chemistry and this was no different. Bret goes go a crossbody but DiBiase rolls through it for the win. Bret sells it perfectly post match by mouthing ''F***''. Great match here mainly due to the debut of Taker who no doubt was destined to be a big star with how well he did here and Bret/DiBiase in those final few minutes. With guys like Bret and Taker the future definitely looks bright for this company huh? Good stuff here.
The Visionaries- Rick Martel,Warlord and Power and Glory vs The Vipers- Jake Roberts,Jimmy Snuka and Rockers- Big feud of this match was Martel and Roberts after Martel sprayed Roberts in the eyes with his cologne ''Arrogance'' on an episode of Superstars a month prior to this. Jake sold the whole blind thing by wearing a white contact in his eye. I remember in a shoot him saying how wearing those contacts were a pain in the ass as they were so uncomfortable.First elimination comes about 5 minutes in after Warlord catches Marty Jannetty coming off the top with a picture perfect powerslam. After a stretch Jimmy Snuka is next to go after Martel rolls him up. I gotta mention Martel here as all match he's gold by doing his best to avoid Jake. He was so good in the Model role. Shame they never went further with it. The future HBK is next after another stretch when he gets with the always awesome looking ''Power-Plex'' from Roma and Herc or Herc and Jerk in another Gorillaism. It's 4 on 1 with Jake being the lone man. Jake gets counted out not long after when he chases Martel backstage with Damien. The whole heel team is survivors which is the first time it happened in the events brief history to this point. The whole match was all about the Jake/Martel feud but I still enjoyed this one.
The Natural Disasters- Earthquake, Dino Bravo,Haku and Barbarian vs The Hulkamaniacs- Hulk Hogan,Big Boss Man, Jim Duggan and Tugboat- Rick Rude was supposed to be apart of the heel team here as he was feuding with Big Boss Man during this time period but he left prior to event so he was replaced by Haku. Speaking of Haku he's the first one to go here as Boss Man hits em with his signature Boss Man slam. Few minutes go buy and Duggan is axed next after using his 2x4 on the heels and getting himself Dqed in the process. I can imagine if Ventura was on commentary he'd be ripping Duggan for being an idiot. Hogan gets the next elimination as he gets Bravo in a small package to send him packing. Hogan using a small package is a sight to see. Quake gets the next elimination few minutes later by dropping an elbow on the Boss Man. The future Natural Disasters get counted out next as both Quake and Tugboat brawl on the floor leading to a double countout. We are down to Hogan and Barbarian. Barb gets some good offense in on the Hulkster even hitting him with his signature top rope clothesline but in the end Hogan Hulks up,Big boot, leg drop for the win. Like the 1st match the ending here was never in doubt but this was still a fun and energetic match. Piper cheering on Hogan in still a weird sight over 28 years later.
Intermission time as we get comments from fans talking about the event. Next...
Mean Gene interviews Macho King Randy Savage on the podium. This is during the time Savage was starting his feud with Warrior as prior to this event Queen Sherri slapped Warrior 3 times on the Brother Love show. The King vows to take the belt DIG IT!! More filler here but I always love savage interviews so I didn't mind this.
The Mercenaries- Sgt. Slaughter,Boris Zhukov, and Orient Express vs The Alliance- Nikolai Volkoff, Tito Santana and Bushwhackers- Before the match begins Mean Gene interviews Sarge's team in the aisle in which Sarge badmouths the USA and the troops. This goes on for FAR to long. I can only imagine how the fans felt. Zhukov is the 1st to go not even a minute in after Tito hits em with his flying forearm. After this we get rapid eliminations. Sato by Butch after a battering ram,and Tanaka by another Tito flying forearm. Sarge is all alone. We get a little stretch but this is when the rapid eliminations start up again. Nikolai by a elbow drop,Luke by a gutbuster, and Butch with a simple clothesline. Tito and Sarge fight it out for the next few minutes but then we get a ref bump with General Adnan coming in and hitting Tito which causes the DQ and the win for the Alliance. Terribly dull match that was rushed as all hell. Definite worst match of the night.
Next up is the infamous egg hatching segment. Mean Gene is the MC here so to speak. The egg hatches and out comes...a turkey named the Gobbely Gooker. Yep you read that right. Wrestlecrap at it's finest humanoids. The crowd booed it at first but after he took Mean Gene to the ring for a dance the crowd started cheering. Total mess here but I can see Vince having a ball with it backstage. This segment is infamous for all the wrong reasons.
Grand Finale Match of Survival- Ted DiBiase,Rick Martel,Warlord and Power and Glory vs Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior and Tito Santana- Warlord right off the bat gets eliminated by a Tito forearm. Not long after he tries to hit Dibiase with it but gets a hot shot instead and he's outta there. after a little stretch Roma is next after Hogan hits em with a clothesline. again you can tell this match is getting rushed. Martel walks out next after taking a beating from Warrior and Hogan. The last two eliminations are rapid as DiBise gets eliminated by a Hogan leg drop and Hercules gets axed by a Warrior Splash. Hogan/Warrior are your survivors. I really liked the concept of this but you could tell not much effort was put into it so I can see why it never returned.
Final Thoughts- This SSeries gets a lot of flack but I actually didn't mind it. It's nowhere near the best but it's still not bad IMO. The highlights to me is the 2nd match with Takers debut,Hogans team vs Quakes team and for the concept of the grand finale match. Definitely feel free to skip the Gooker segment and Sarge match. For the positives I listed though this is worth a watch and on top of that it's only 2 hours and 20 minutes long.Verdict-Recommended
Next time on the Classic Reviews we'll head to MSG for the 20th WrestleMania!

I liked this PPV, the teams they put together were awesome. I think a lot of people rag on it because of the big EGG reveal that turned into a dud and the last two matches were really rushed. But, overall it was a good PPV. If they were going to have a rematch Hogan vs Warrior at Mania 7, this would have been the place to start it with them in the final match together. Really wish Savage wrestled here, would have been great to see him in the first match on Perfect's team. A few interesting notes about the second match, one, on one of Hitman's interviews (can't remember which) he said that he got to be eliminated last in the match as a tribute to his brother who passed away before the PPV, I believe he said that Ted DiBiase was the one who recommended it to Vince. Those two really worked well together, to bad they never had an official feud. They did wrestle a few times in 1991 and Bret & Owen wrestled Money Inc. in late 1992 or early 1993. Would have been nice to see Bret and Ted have a feud in 1991 when Bret was IC champ. Second, on Brother Love's podcasts, he mentioned that Undertaker actually dropped Koko on his head. When Taker was eliminated and back in the locker room Koko got in his face and tore him a new one.
