I'm kind of torn on this PPV, the Rumble match was good but I really like the last 4 guys to be top stars (no offense to Studd and DiBiase), but the ending was a let down - pretty much after the Mega Powers and Boss Man were eliminated the Rumble match dragged on. I didn't mind the posedown as it is a good way to get the guys on the card without giving them a match (since they were going to wrestle twice on PPV later), nice way to kick off the feud. Best match of the night was the opener, nice kickoff match. As for the other two match, very boring to me, I know that's a bad thing to say about Haku and Race but they just didn't seem to have good chemistry here. The women's match was bad too, as was the division at this time. For me, the next three rumbles were/are my favorites. Yeah as soon as Hogan gets eliminated you could hear the crowd deflate.
What helped the posedown for me big time was Jesse Ventura. Him ripping on the Warrior and the crowd was gold.
Haku/Race while not a classic match by any means still was a nice brawl and for that I enjoyed it. The Women's match was atrocious. No surprise the crowd was dead for that one.

No doubt. Jesse was always gold any time Hulk or Warrior were on. Yeah, after Hogan was gone the crowd died down. The only thing good about the rest was DiBiase, I was a little surprised he didn't get the win but I heard that they were going to push Studd and this was the starting point. Yeah, I just didn't feel the Haku/Harley match though I haven't watched the match in years so I could be mistaken. Best thing I remember about the match was Heenan cheering for one guy and then a minute later cheering for the other guy.

I'm really looking forward to your review of WrestleMania VI, as it's one of my all time favorites! Yeah, I liked the event, some good matches and feuds at this time. Odd thing, I actually didn't see the PPV until a couple years after the event happened - I want to say either 1993 or 1994. It was never in the blockbuster that my family went to; I was at a friends house one day and the blockbuster that they went to had it so that's when I finally got to see it.

Very similar with my local video store. Their stock of WWF videos at the time went from all PPV tapes from 1988 (and a few more Coliseum non-PPVs) to WrestleMania V, Summerslam and Survivor Series 1989 with skipping Royal Rumble in between.

In honor of its 25 year anniversary, I'd like to suggest you do in the future- ECW The Night The Line Was Crossed. That show put ecw on the map!
About Rumble 89, I agree with the review. I liked everything except the posedown(though Jesse made it tolerable). I like Rockin Robin so I don't want to say anything bad about her match. Imagine a real fight between Haku and Harley Race(supposedly the two legit toughest wrestlers of all time)? Dino Bravo actually takes a rare pinfall in the six man match. Why was it even 2/3 falls? The 89 Royal Rumble match is one of my favorite Rumble matches. Back then did anyone predict Big John Studd would win it?

Now there's an event I haven't watched in years. ECW-Night the line was crossed on the list.

Now there's an event I haven't watched in years. ECW-Night the line was crossed on the list. Maybe this is a stupid question knowing you live in Philly, did you ever go to an ecw show at the arena? If you went to more than one, what was your first?

Believe it or not I didn't go to many of em. I did go to some shows during the later years(mostly house show type cards) but with my busy schedule I didn't get a chance to go to more like I would've wanted.
Nothing was like it though. The atmosphere in that building was always electric. I've been to shows at the Spectrum and The WFC but man nothing tops being in the ECW Arena.

Royal Rumble 1989
Your Hosts- Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura
Dino Bravo/Fabulous Rougeau Brothers vs Jim Duggan/Hart Foundation in a 2/3 falls match- Very energetic opener here with a hot crowd. The big feud in this match is Duggan/Bravo as they've been feuding since the Fall of 88.1st fall goes to the heels as Bret takes Dino's signature suplex and Rougeaus top rope finisher. The babyfaces rally back in fall 2 as Raymond gets hit with an Anvil slingshot followed by a Duggan elbow drop.We are all tied up!The babyfaces get the 3rd and final fall after Duggan hits Bravo with his trust 2x4. USA USA USA!!!! Fun match here as you had classic tag wrestling mixed in with a hot crowd. Positive way to kick us off here for sure.
We get a video next of the wrestlers picking their numbers for the main event. Ted DiBiase in particular doesn't look happy. He then talks to Slick. What's he up to??!!
The Super Posedown is next between Rick Rude and Ultimate Warrior. This is a big waste of time as it's just 2 guys posing for the crowd for a good 15 minutes. This segment has Vince written all over it. Warrior wins in the end(big shock!) Bobby Heenan then sprays warrior in the eyes with something leading to Rude laying him out a steel workout bar. That's the only positive I can say about this whole thing. Rude would get the IC belt at WM V so points there in continuing to build the feud but man this was tough to sit through.
Rockin' Robin vs Judy Martin for the WWF Women's Title- Sensational Sherri is on commentary as right before the match she declared herself the next contender for the belt. Pretty bad match here as they were just going through the motions. Sherri was great as a manager but man was she annoying on commentary here. Robin gets the win after hitting a crossbody from the middle rope. The Women's belt would be retired by the Summer. Can't say I blame em as the division by this point was dead. Bad match.
Intermission time as we get promos from the managers proclaiming their specific talent will win the Rumble.
Haku vs Harley Race in the battle for the crown- Race got injured the previous Spring and had to relinquish the throne so that's when Haku took over. With Race being back he wants his thrown back to here we are. I liked this match as you had two legit tough guys being the crap outta each other for nearly 10 minutes. It was also a sight to see Race in the babyface role for this match. Haku wins after hitting em with his signature side kick which always looked awesome. After this match Race would leave the WWF where he would have short stints in Puerto Rico and Stampede wrestling before retiring in the early 90s.
Next up is promos from the big names in the Rumble. Always a highlight for me
Royal Rumble match-Another fun Rumble match here with some great moments like Ax/Smash drawing 1 and 2, Andre coming in at number 3 and getting beat down by the tag champs,Curt Hennig's 1st Rumble and having a good showing,Warlord having the shortest time elimination wise and the big tease between Hogan/Savage after Hogan ''accidently'' eliminates him and Bad News Brown. Also gotta give a nod to the timeless chemistry between Gorilla and Jesse on commentary as again they hit a home run here. Shame this was the only Rumble match they ever called together. The last two are Big John Studd and Ted Dibiase with Dibiase not lasting to long with the big man before getting eliminated. I was happy Studd got this last big moment of his career. The match at times does drag a little at times but it's still a fun Rumble I thought overall. We get a Savage interview post match and you could clearly see the big showdown at WM V between him and Hogan by this point. The announcer hype Mania and we fade to black.
Final Thoughts- Good show here with the only negatives being the posedown and Robin/Martin. Definitely check this out if you're a fan of the era. Verdict-Recommended
Next time on the Classic Reviews we'll head to Skydome for WrestleMania VI!
Until next time...Stay Classic Humanoids I liked this Rumble a lot, but I felt like DiBiase should have won. It would have really given him more credibility.

WrestleMania VI
Your Hosts- Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura(Sadly for the last time together )
Koko B Ware vs Rick Martel-Energetic opener here but the ending was never in doubt.Martel was still pretty new to his model character so no way was he losing. The Model puts away the Birdman with his signature Boston Crab after about 5 and half minutes.
The Colossal Connection vs Demolition for the WWF Tag Titles-Hey what's up with the champs getting the jobber treatment with no entrance??!! This is pretty much a handicap match with Andre doing very little work but that's understandable considering his health during this time.Finish comes when Haku accidently kicks Andre leading him to do his infamous tangled in the ropes spot leading to Haku then taking the Decapitation and we have new champs!! The Toronto faithful popped HUGE for this and so did I when I first watched this being the Demo mark I am. Post match Bobby Heenan slaps Andre leading to Andre lashing out on both him and his former tag partner. This was Andre's last hurrah of his wrestling career WWF wise so for him to go out on a big babyface note like this was so fitting. Him going back on the cart to big cheers was such a great moment. Very fun match here with a classic post match segment.
Hercules vs Earthquake-Same as the first match with the ending never in doubt. At one point Herc tries for his signature backbreaker but Quake easily counters it and hits the big squash for the win. You could tell Quake was being groomed for Hogan as he looked like a killer here. Herc on the other hand was going nowhere by this point but would be revived by the Summer when he formed Power and Glory with Paul Roma.
Brutus Beefcake vs Mr. Perfect - Good match here as both seemed to connect with each other. Finish comes when Beefcake send Perfect head first into the ring post leading to the pin. To this day I still think it was a bad finish to end Perfect's streak but I can understand why they went with Beefcake. Post match Brut-I tries for a haircut on Perfect but he escapes so he settles with the Genius. After this Perfect would get the IC belt while Beefcake would stay strong in the ranks until having his near career ending accident over the Summer.
Roddy Piper vs Bad News Brown-This feud stems from the Rumble when BNB eliminated Hot Rod after he was eliminated by him in the first place. Before the match we get the infamous unveiling of the Hot Rod/Scot in which Piper has half his body painted black. Piper later said the paint wouldn't come off post match so he to walk through the airport wearing the stuff! After about a good week he got the paint off but man can you imagine having half your body painted for that long? As far as the match goes it was just your basic brawl but for these two guys it worked for the most part. Finish comes when both guys brawl on the floor and get counted out. This would be the end of the feud as after this Piper would slowly move to the booth and BNB would feud with Jake Roberts before leaving right after SSlam.
Hart Foundation vs Bolsheviks- Hart Attack on Boris after not even 20 seconds ends this squash. Harts would be heading to the tag belts after this while the Bolsheviks would split and we would get babyface Nikolai....Yayy?
Tito Santana vs Barbarian- Barbarian is managed by Bobby Heenan here as right before this they split up POP. This is pretty much a squash to put over Barbarian in his new singles role. Finish comes when Barb hits an AWESOME looking top rope clothesline which Tito sells perfectly.
Macho King Randy Savage and Queen Sherri vs Dusty Rhodes/Sapphire- This is a classic feud that started at the Rumble and would last until SSlam. Ventura is gold here as always as he rips into the babyfaces pretty hard here. Finish comes when Miss Liz(who returns here after being gone since SSlam 89) shoves Sherri into a roll up by Sapphire. With the excellent chemistry by Dusty and Savage and the Jesse's commentary, this match gets a passing grade.
Intermission time as we get classic interviews from Heenan,Savage/Sherri, Demo and Hogan/Warrior in which both guys cut weird but classic promos.
Rockers vs Orient Express- Nowhere near the greatness of their Rumble 91 match but still not bad as these two teams always had great chemistry. Finish comes when Sato throws salt in Marty Jannetty's eyes which he sells by going of the barrier leading to a countout.
Dino Bravo vs Jim Duggan- Terrible match here but at least it was short. Only positive was Ventura ripping on Duggan for chanting USA in Canada.Finish comes when Duggan hits Bravo with his 2x4 leading to the pin. He would get his though post match when Quake comes in and squashes him a few times.Jesse- ''You wanna cheat? You're going to pay the price for it!''
Ted DiBiase vs Jake Roberts-Classic feud here that started the previous lasted Mania in which DiBiase attempted to steal Damien. The feud was on hold for the Summer of 89 as in kayfabe Jake got hurt but in reality he was going through legal issues. Before the match we get my favorite Jack promo as he talks about humiliating the money man. Definitely check this one out from the master. Not a bad match here but a little tedious at times. The crowd is bored as at one point they start a wave. Finish comes with Jake posts DiBiase but Virgil puts the money man back in before Jake for the count out. No $ belt for the snake. Post match Jake DDTs DiBiase and hands out his money to a few ham n eggers in the crowd. Even Mary Tyler Moore gets a C note!
Big Boss Man vs Akeem- Battle of the Twin Towers! I remember being sad they broke em up as I really liked the team. Before the match starts DiBiase attacks Boss Man leading to a feud that would last a few months before quietly getting dropped by the Summer. Short match here with Boss Man making short work of Akeem with his signature side slam. Akeem after this would really do nothing of note before leaving in the Fall.
Next up is the premier of Rhythm and Blues hit song ''Hunka,Hunka, Hunka, Honky Love!! Just filler here till we get the Bushwhackers coming out in the end and destroying their precious guitars. Hey for what it's worth I liked the song! Gotta love Roy Orbis...errr I mean Greg Valentine.I also gotta mention a young DDP is the one driving the heels to the ring for this segment.
Rick Rude vs Jimmy Snuka- Just a filler match before the main event. Classic comedian Steve Allen is on commentary. Snuka by this point was doing nothing of note. Finish comes when Rude hits his signature Rude Awakening. After this Rude would challenge for the World Title but in the end would be unsuccess(sadly) before leaving in the Fall.
IC Champ Ultimate Warrior vs WWF World Champ Hulk Hogan in Title vs Title match-Well we are finally here at the Ultimate Challenge!! After great build between these two that started with the stare down at the Rumble. I've watched this match many times through the years and it never gets old. From a wrestling standpoint it's far from a classic but for the storytelling and the hot crowd this match indeed passes in flying colors. Finish comes when Hogan misses his leg drop allowing for Warrior to hit his splash for the win. To see Hogan pinned clean like this is still a sight to see as he rarely lost let alone pinned clean during his time on top. Post match Hogan awards the belt to Warrior in a passing of a torch type moment. Warrior poses with pyro to close us out. Definitely an historic and classic match on so many levels and a must see for fans of the era.
Final Thoughts- Oh yeah this Mania still holds up. You got great moments like Demo winning the belts for the 3rd and last time,Piper as the Hot Scot, the 1st ever mix tag match and the classic main event. Gorilla and Jesse for their last time together hit a home run as usual. Almost 29 years later and it's still fantastic in my book. Oh yeah big props to the Toronto crowd. Verdict- Highly Recommended
Next time on the Classic Reviews we'll head to Philly for ECW-The Night the Line was Crossed 94!
Until Next time...Stay Classic Humanoids
