I've been excited for this since it was announced. He was my favorite part of civil war. He has a good look and is just cool. But as time has drawn near, I've had my excitement dwindled to "I'll catch it on redbox" levels. I'm sure someone will take offense go this post. I'm sure it will go south and be locked. But I have to ask. What's the big ing deal? I'm especially aiming this question at our black members ( with no malicious intent). All I'm reading is it's going to be a huge cultural event, people are even expecting movie goers dressed as characters. But why? It's a fictional movie about a fictional man with fictional powers in a fictional country. What's so empowering here? Wouldn't a movie like cool running which is somewhat based on a true story be more empowering? Is it because he is a hero? Because so is blade. He had 3 movies. And none of this hype. So is storm. And cyborg. There is even a black version of superman. I honestly don't get it, and would love it if someone could explain it to me. Again, no bad intentions here. It just doesn't seem like something that life changing. It seems to be treated like Obama getting elected was, and it isn't on that level. Black kids can see they can be president because of Obama. They still can't be superheroes. If anyone is uncomfortable having this conversation here, please pm me. I am very interested in learning.

As a mixed-race/half-black member of the forum I can speak to this, but maybe only with half the validity . You can call out the Blade movies and you can call out the other supporting heroes but no one black character has headlined a movie with this level of exposure and projected popularity before in 'mainstream' box office cinema, ever. While I feel like this makes people predisposed to enjoy this movie maybe more than they should I understand it because up until this point it's obviously been Batman/Superman/Spider-Man that rule the world and they all have one thing in common for certain. Personally skin color has never made anyone less/more relatable to me. I love Luke Skywalker but I also love Prince Akeem in Coming to America on almost the same level but with a different emotion. I straight up grew up idolizing both men and never once thought about black or white so as an adult when that comes up it kind of makes me laugh because at 6 I really didn't care. To I think answer your question a character with this type of accessibility in the mainstream has never before been black. You can name Shaft or Django or just go up and down the line but Black Panther puts it on another level and the fact of the matter is studios STILL in this day and age have concerns putting money behind movies with an all black cast and this kind of transcends that so people have reason to be excited. That having been said most anyone here who has spoken to me knows I pretty much despise most of the Marvel movies but they're getting more and more bearable for me as time goes on and they worry less about back-story and more about just giving the main character an experience. In my opinion they still lack director's vision because of over-the-top necessities and studio input and that's my fear with Black Panther despite my minimal interest. So you are allowed to have other reasons for not being interested in the movie again because nothing other than 'we have a mostly black cast' makes this movie look like it's anything other than the same old Marvel song-and-dance, but I digress. If you were excited for Black Panther, go see the movie and enjoy it. I promise it may seem like people's excitement and overhyping (you're right in that it's a fictional movie and Cool Runnings is an empowering black film because it's based on a true story, but this isn't the world we live in. People like fictional superheroes and we all have to deal, begrudgingly) is going to last forever but it won't. There are silly/ignorant/exhaustingly stereotypical thoughts anytime something like this happens in the modern world and people like to consume those types of discussions. But you have made clear that you like the character and can enjoy it regardless of specifics that may matter to others, so you should do just that. You don't have to be a part of the conversation and if someone forces you to be, your thoughts are fair as long as you maintain that you are a colorblind human being which it sounds like you are. Let us all know how it is!

I just saw the preview for this movie last night. It looks horrible. I’ll be honest though...I absolutely hate all the superhero movies besides dark knight and iron man.

I wont see it until it hits BluRay (which is what I do to most Marvel movies)...I dont think it will be bad but I fully expect it to be over hyped because of the whole race thing. Just as Wonder Woman was. Wonder Woman was a good movie but it wasnt like "omg this floored me, lets give it all awards"....it just had a social backing that made it seem bigger/better then what it really was.

I’ve seen the movie and agree 100% with this. It’s a solid showing but nothing ground breaking. He’s essentially another super soldier like Captain America. Nothing we haven’t seen before.

We’re you this upset by Wonder Woman? Wonder woman wasn't hyped nearly this much. And of it was, and women were dressing as her and vacuuming the theater floors or whatever groups of women do together, yeah, it would be annoyed me. Just like star wars people annoy me camping out and dressing like stormtroopers and crap.

If I just said I feel the same way about the (mostly white, if not almost entirely white) People that dress up for star wars, then there is nothing wrong with my feelings about this either. Take your agenda and shove it up your ass.
