Is it true Matt Borne quit because he was against them turning the character face? Not exactly. He was fired for repeated drug offenses.

Does anyone know how many guys play this character? and why they stopped wrestling the character? Quite a few wrestlers have played Doink - but the main 2 that played Doink was Matt Bourne in 1993 (heel Doink) and then Ray Apollo in 1994 (face Doink, with midget Dink)

Is it true Matt Borne quit because he was against them turning the character face? Not exactly. He was fired for repeated drug offenses. Yeah, unfortunately, Doink loved him some booger sugar. I'm sure Matt Borne was against the idea of turning the character full-fledged babyface. Most of the what he did best as Doink was portray him as this maniacal, kind of sleazy clown. Even if Borne hadn't gotten fired, I'm not even confident if he could have salvaged the gimmick as a happy-go-lucky circus clown with Dink and all that nonsense. Most of the promos and build-up to Survivor Series 1993 featured Borne. I assume he got fired the week of the PPV because that event was the debut of Ray Apollo. That garbage match was the official death of the Doink character in my opinion. Borne was gone and someone else was coming in to work a gimmick that had already been neutered and stripped of everything that made it entertaining in the first place. Maybe it was for the better.
