I'm miffed about PC culture and the digging into peoples pasts. I feel like that is the hearth of my thread. Jimmy Snuka is not given the reverence he was earlier, ditto for Moolah. All over accusations decades later. It's rewriting history, which is what this board is based on. I get what you’re saying about PC culture. Sometimes it goes too far. But standards evolve, and what may have been overlooked in the past, can’t be these days. The internet makes a lot of information available that may not have been common knowledge in the past. Naming the tournament after Moolah (sorry PJ I know it’s not classic but would like to answer the point), may cause curiosity among newer fans and when they search for Moolah, will uncover a lot of shady information. WWE is a publicly traded company and has to protect its own interests, whether we, as fans like it or not. By endorsing someone with a murky past (think Benoit, Chyna for HOF etc), could be construed as accepting what they’ve done. As fans, especially of the classic board, should appreciate that WWE is willing to pay tribute to people from the past, whether they name it the Mae Young, Sherri or Bertha Faye classic tournament. I see your point, but it's hard to think of Mae Young in the same light as Moolah. Moolah is the female Bruno.

Maybe, just maybe... Mae Young just meant a lot to those in charge of WWE! And they did this to pay respect to her. Nothing more, nothing less. No need to look for a underlined reasoning. No need to pretend there is some unwritten rule on who these need to be named after.

Wasn't Moolah some sort of female pimp? Like a real life manager / agent / trainer that got her girls bookings, gave them a place to live... but charged them a lot off the top and always wanted money off their future paychecks when they moved on to a real job? Moolah is money baby! She was just as toxic as she was helpful or so the stories go.
I assume that's the reason they went with the Mae Young Classic rather than the Fabulous Moolah Tournament.

This really isn’t “classic” board material as it’s about a modern tournament being named after a deceased wrestler. No it really isnt, reading is comprehension. This thread is about Moolah's legacy, the tournament is simply the catalyst for my theory. I believe that Moolah is being glossed over due to some people's weird concerns about decades old allegations. I also never implied that Moolah was the most talented woman to come down the pike, but she is the Babe Ruth of women's wrestling. She is a true icon of the ring. Moolah paved the roads, she set the table, it's just off putting to see a prestigious tournament named after a much less significant performer. The real question at heart is why should allegations effect classic era performers legacies? Especially the deceased, who are not here to defend themselves. Are you freaking serious? If it wasn't for Mildred Burke, there sure as hell wasn't going to be the Fabulous Moolah. Mildred Burke was the one who truly paved the road for women's wrestling. The reason the tournament was named after Mae Young is simple. Mae Young didn't have the controversial backstory that Moolah had. The WWE using Mae Young as the name attached was for PR reasons. The WWE is trying so hard to have good PR in this PC climate.

Yeah two of them dont have accusations of pimping out their trainees and therefore are more likely to be put in the public eye.

Moolah should be lucky she did all of those unethical things in her day. Should a woman do that today, there would be lawsuits up the ass. I am glad the tournament was named after Mae Young. I don't want to hear any lame ass statements claiming Moolah was a saint. Hell, Mother Theresa wasn't a saint.

The fact is I hope Moolah's name continues to loom large, she was a great entertainer, excellent heat, she knew all of the tricks of the trade. Wrestling has only evolved in terms of athleticism, but I always circle back around to the men and women who could work a crowd. Look I love me some Mae, but her career should not be blown up into something it wasn't.

Here's some homework fellas, find me a big card from the 60s, 70s, or 80s, with Mae Young on it.

Mae Young & Mildred Burke > Moolah CASE CLOSED!!!/
Have a good morning! Grab your coffee because you are going to be compelled to drink 50 cups of it.
