Let me start by saying that I lived me some Mae Young, such was a real treasure. I respect all of the pioneers from that era, and she was a doll in her old age.
Respect and admiration aside, why in the heck is the WWE giving her a tournament of the Fabulous Moolah? You would think that Mae was the iconic, transcendent, wrestler. No offense, but c'mon! Where is the love and acknowledgement of Moolah?
I know about the claims out there, I've read them in detail, but I hate stuff like that effecting legacies decades later. Is that the issue here?

I think they named it after Mae because she had passed more recently than Moolah, plus, because of the allegations made against Moolah - I don't think WWE is willing to risk getting any bad press for celebrating her.

Why risk getting bad press for something when you can get the same effect by naming it after someone that doesn’t have that stuff associated with them?

If the accusations are indeed true, Moolah was one of the most vile humans to ever be involved in wrestling. Why on earth would anyone want a tournament named after such a human being? It's bad enough that WWE and Stephanie McMahon continue to glorify Moolah, when in my view she should not be spoken of at all. Having read up on the subject (Sisterhood of the Squared Circle is a great book that I'd highly recommend), I'm inclined to believe the accusations against her from many in the industry, that she'd pimp her female wrestlers out to male wrestlers, allow them to be raped, take a hefty chunk of their earnings to ensure they wouldn't be able to make a living without her, while also convincing promoters to blacklist women who didn't want to work for her, thereby holding women's wrestling back decades with her stranglehold. When so many people have the exact same accusations about someone, there's got to be at least some truth to it.

Want to name it after a woman that did pioneer in the business then call it the Sherri tournament. She was 10 times the wrestler Mae & Moolah were. She was miles better as a "showman/showwoman"...she could cut promos, manage, get wrestlers over and have great matches. Just cause you're the first doesnt always mean you did the most or was the best.

Just cause you're the first doesnt always mean you did the most or was the best. Couldn't agree more. In my opinion, Moolah is one of the most overrated performers in wrestling history. When you hear stories, about her actually owning the championship belt, and being involved in booking of her and other women, along with the allegations that have come against her, and it takes a lot of that luster, that Vince and his dad had put on her. Plus, she was nothing special in the ring either. To me the one thing she was excellent at, was being able to play the behind the scenes game, very well. |

I believe that Moolah is being glossed over due to some people's weird concerns about decades old allegations. I also never implied that Moolah was the most talented woman to come down the pike, but she is the Babe Ruth of women's wrestling. She is a true icon of the ring. Moolah paved the roads, she set the table, it's just off putting to see a prestigious tournament named after a much less significant performer. The real question at heart is why should allegations effect classic era performers legacies? Especially the deceased, who are not here to defend themselves. |

It's hard to put stock in people saying Moolah wasn't talented in the ring, most of you would say that about entire cards in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Some people just don't respect the era before highspots and false finishes. I'm not trying to sound condescending, I really believe that.

But standards evolve, and what may have been overlooked in the past, can’t be these days. The internet makes a lot of information available that may not have been common knowledge in the past. Naming the tournament after Moolah (sorry PJ I know it’s not classic but would like to answer the point), may cause curiosity among newer fans and when they search for Moolah, will uncover a lot of shady information. WWE is a publicly traded company and has to protect its own interests, whether we, as fans like it or not. By endorsing someone with a murky past (think Benoit, Chyna for HOF etc), could be construed as accepting what they’ve done. As fans, especially of the classic board, should appreciate that WWE is willing to pay tribute to people from the past, whether they name it the Mae Young, Sherri or Bertha Faye classic tournament. |

So because there was no way of us knowing (back then) that Moolah or whomever was a piece of crap...we're suppose to just not care now that we do know?
Seriously the only time anyone ever says anything positive about Moolah is during a WWE produced show/segment. That should tell you a lot right there.

I just don't do revisionist history, based upon allegations. I'm not into the court of public opinion, that's all there is to it. It's either proven in a court of law, or I have my own intimate knowledge. Neither applies to the likes of Moolah and Snuka. Something like Benoit was determined by investigators at the scene, I'll take that. All was well and good with Snuka until he began writing a book in the early stages of dementia, thus contradicting and subsequently incriminating himself. He never had his day in court. Moolah is simply talking heads, glorified gossip is what that is. |
