So I see that the official match listing has been released online for the upcoming Macho Man Randy Savage "unreleased matches" dvd. It's damn near criminal that every Savage fan's dream match (that does actually exist)...was not included on this set. I'm talking about Macho Man vs The Undertaker! At least 3 recorded matches exist between the two, and based on the highlight clips of one of their bouts (youtube), it was a professionally shot match at that. This absence will always be a head-scratcher.
Anyways, and as a lifelong fan of Savage’s work, I've drafted my own wish-list of "lost" Savage matches. This list is based off of matches that have actually occurred, or at least are strongly rumored to have taken place. I've already stated that Randy faced the Undertaker on 3 house show matches (subbing for The Ultimate Warrior). So hopefully one of these will still one day surface. I also read in Kamala’s autobiography that he once wrestled Savage in the WWF, and I did happen to find that house show result (see list below). Bob Backlund’s autobiography also mentions a match against Savage, but I believe this was prior to Randy’s WWF career, which still seems impossible, as Backlund was in WWF long before Savage. So it's unlikely to end up on WWE programming.
Savage and Rick Rude wrestled on a handful of WWF house shows (and the Memphis territory), but have yet to be uploaded (excluding Memphis footage) to anywhere or on any dvd collection. I'm uncertain if House Shows were always taped, but maybe it was at least required for critique or historical purposes. I have seen the fancam footage (YouTube) from a match in Japan (see below list) in which Savage challenged Bret for the WWF Heavy Weight Title. Decent match that IMO deserves a proper home on the network or dvd set. While it’s not a match, I know that Randy made a memorable save when Big Bully Busick was looking for a fight during an episode of Prime Time Wrestling. I don't think they ever had an official match though, as Bruno (Harvey Whippleman) mentioned in his autobiography that Savage complained about Busick being very unpolished, following their Prime Time scuffle.
I know that most people have heard of Randy’s two high-profile matches with HBK that took place overseas, but theirs some fancam footage of a 3rd (01/30/93 from Rhode Island) and 4th (where an unknown person counted the faux pinfall) with HBK floating around online also. It would be nice to see these given some proper attention. This one is a long shot, because I'm not sure if WCW filmed house shows at all, but Randy (sub. for Goldberg) took on Sid Vicious on 01/14/2000 at a WCW house show. That match had ppv Main Event potential written all over it, but only took place on this one rare occassion.
Savage also took on the often times underrated worker "The Mountie" during a dark match (and possible tv taping) in 92, as well as a few House Shows as well. And get this, Savage actually beat both Nikolai Volkoff and King Kong Bundy at the 04/09/1987 KOTR event in Rhode Island, but where is our footage at? Anytime WWF featured the once commonplace "David versus Goliath" matches like Savage vs Bundy, or Kamala, they just had a sorta special appeal to me, as the victory really meant something more, due to the massive size mismatch. Remember, a lot of the old WWF programming was built on both ends of the body-type spectrum. Unlike today's primarily cookie-cutter body types of Olympic Swimmer's versus other Swimmer's (kidding).
A match that would be a close 2nd place (after The Undertaker no doubt) for my holy grail of "lost" Savage matches would be versus Terry Funk. The intensity and ring psychology of those two would be a clinic in story telling. I know that Funk (and Randy, see below list) squared off against Randy's brother Lanny in WWF, but according to an interview that Funk did on radio show on 05/23/11 (600 AM ESPN El Paso) just after Randy's passing, he also had some "big money" matches with Savage as well.
Another close Runner-Up match would be either of Randy's two solo matches (which also happened to occur on the same day) against Sgt. Slaughter. It was a gimmick match, but it was the Desert Storm match, and that type of match actually had potential to be really good. I mean, if Hogan made these matches look epic, just imagine what a versatile worker like Savage coulda pulled off with another workhorse like Slaughter. I actually had the pleasure to discuss a Savage feud with Slaughter a few years back. He said it was a feud he would have gladly welcomed, but their heel/face personas were never quite in sync with each other for it to make any sense.
Anyways, what do you guys think? Should WWE take note (yeah right) of some of these suggestions and attempt to compose another dvd collection (before dvd's are completely extinct)? Although, I'm not sure if House Shows were always 100% recorded, and most of my wish-list is from House Show events. Do you guys have any other lost Randy Savage gems that would be added to your custom wish-list? Here's a recap (my top 10 are in bold) of my wish list for a PROPER Randy Savage "lost matches" dvd collection-
1. Randy Savage vs The Undertaker. Any of the 3 recorded solo matches between July 30th and August 2nd in 1991. 07/30/91 Portland Civic Center, 07/31/91 Moncton New Brunswick, or 08/02/91 Pittsburgh PA Civic Center (Body Bag Match) - all were House Shows
2. Randy Savage vs Kamala (mentioned in his autobiography, and only solo encounter) Halifax, Nova Scotia Metro Centre 06/04/92 - House Show
3. Randy Savage vs Bob Backlund (eluded to in his autobiography). Likely to have occurred before Savage's WWF run
4. Randy Savage vs Rick Rude (House Shows) ex. Louisville, KY Louisville Gardens 12/17/88
5. Randy Savage & Bret Hart vs Adam Bomb & Owen Hart 05/09/94 from Japan (fancam footage exists online)

ps- Although my wish-list and the official match listing for the upcoming DVD differ drastically, several of the matches on the listing were nice surprises. Like the house show match against Luger from 93, or the House Show tag match with Mr. Perfect vs Giant Gonzalez & Mr. Hughes. How about the unofficial Mega Powers reunion against Jake Roberts & The Berzerker! Also, I'm glad to see at least one of the matches with Razor Ramon made the cut as well. And of course, the Randy Savage, Rowdy Roddy Piper & Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Ric Flair, Jake “The Snake” Roberts & The Undertaker match is a welcomed gem that I never knew existed!
