WFWF: End Time Review
BY ICHABOD SLIPP| @i_SLIPP| MAY 30, 2018[EDITOR’S NOTE: My plane was delayed for a couple of hours, so I won’t be getting back home at the time I anticipated. As a result, I’m going to be a bit late posting this on the site. My apologies. – Ick]

Running an event at Madison Square Garden is always a big deal – so it’s no wonder the WFWF brought an atomic bomb of a main event to The Mecca, as well as two other matches that are all about paving the path for the future. Whatever happens following this show is going to be the plan going forward for the company. The event was sold out – 20,789 seats were filled with enthusiastic and rowdy New Yorkers.
The show begins with a Mesh interview. Ugh. She goes on to cut the same promo from before, talking about the higher ups of the company seeing something in her and giving her this chance. Yawn. She reveals that she’s never won a championship nor has she main evented a show. Gee, I wonder why? Thankfully, the segment is saved by the WFWF International Champion Frank Lynn but once Mesh starts talking to him, not even rank could save this segment. It was so awkward. Mesh asks Frank if she could hold his championship belt which Frank agrees to let her do only after “attempting” to make the champion laugh with god awful puns and jokes. Surprisingly, there were people in the crowd that laughed but there were some groans. Mesh didn’t even know what to do with herself once she had the championship belt. Again, it was just awkward. Mesh tried to be funny but….no. Once she's done playing champion, she gives the belt back to Frank who then leaves, hopefully realizing that he’s far too talented to be involved in such awful segment like this.
MESH VS. RYAN “NEEDLES” PAYNE - * ½
This is the debut of Ryan Payne, otherwise known as Needles. I’ve never heard of the guy, so he’s certainly a nobody but I gotta say – he’s impressive. He’s a loose cannon and he brought a certain level of uncertainty to the show compared to his opponent, who’s just going through the motions. Needles attacks Mesh almost immediately after the bell rings! I’m guessing Needles isn’t a trained wrestler since most of his offense looks to be punches, kicks and throws. Needles grabbed Mesh and threw her across the ring like a rag doll where we saw strands of hair bunched up in Needles’ hand! Mesh fights back by throwing punches, Needles blocks most of the shots. Bicycle kick to the chest and Needles regains control of the match. A cool spot by Mesh where she flew over the third rope with a suicide dive, but Needles caught her and threw her into the steel barricades – kudos. Funny how the only spot that Mesh has impressed me with and it’s one where she gets hurt. Needles throws Mesh all around ringside, pretty much making a mess of the place. Ouch, baseball bat to the face. Needles gets disqualified, Mesh is the winner. He beats on Mesh afterwards; the referee tries stopping him, but he gets hit with the bat too. Security guards come running out and give chase to Needles. There is a lot of blood dripping from Mesh’s nose, pretty gruesome. The crowd gives her a round of applause as she makes her way to the back.
WINNER: Mesh
We then see the WFWF World Heavyweight Champion David Brennan arrive in a black limo with some woman holding his hand. The interviewer chick asks him – well, she doesn’t really ask Brennan anything. He kinda just goes off on his own, hyping up his long-awaited match against Kyzer who he just completely buries. Short and sweet, I liked it.
The WFWF International Champion Frank Lynn then makes another appearance – hopefully a much more memorable one and pretty much pandered to the crowd. Nothing wrong with that. He then issues a challenge to anybody in the back. He really stressed anybody. Oh, great – the f**king janitor comes out with a horde of security guards behind him. Ugh. Poor Frank – two segments with two of WFWF’s worst. Broom tells Frank that he’s holding up the show, so he must leave but Frank nor the crowd is having it. A loud Let Frank Fight chant broke out, but they still got the champion out of the arena. #Frankdeservesbetter, just saying.
Cameron Stone makes his comeback as promised in the last show. I never really cared for Stone, to be honest. The crowd was sure excited to see him back though so whatever.
TYLER DRAVEN VS. REINA KENSHIN - *** 3/4th
Draven comes out first. Reina comes out second and man, she’s a beast! I’m very familiar with her work in NJA so seeing her in the WFWF is pretty rad. She’s a shoot fighter, I expect her to make a name for herself here in no time. Damn! Right off the bat, they charge at each other like raging bulls. Wasn’t expecting that. This match is going to be the most technically sound of the night, that’s for sure. Oh! Early low blow from Reina. Reina locks in the Crossface early! She’s really pulling back on his neck now! Draven refuses to tap out. Beautiful counter by Draven. Damn, what a chop by Draven! You can the imprint of his hand on Reina’s chest! Reina just took a big bump over the ropes, landing hard on the outside! Holy S**t chant from the crowd. Suicide dive to the outside and both wrestlers are down! I see lots of middle fingers directed at Draven. Irish-whip into the steel ring post…andddd we got color. Draven is busted open, Reina takes the blood and wipes it off on her face! Oh God, she licked her fingers clean! I think I’m going to be sick… [At this point, I felt ill to the point where I stopped taking notes for a bit so there were some spots that I missed. My apologies]
Status Quo from Reina! For those that don’t know – it’s like a flying dropkick to your stomach! Draven kicks out! How?!? Oh, Reina just landed face first on the steel ring post. She’s busted open as well, geez! Hard shots to Reina’s bloodied face as the crowd, for some reason count out “10!” repeatedly. Not sure if trying to hijack the show or sound like a bunch of idiots who need remedial instruction from the Count on Sesame Street. Anyway. DEAD DEMON DRIVER from Draven! It’s over! Wait – it’s not! How did she kick out of that?!? Draven has the same face everyone in the crowd has right now! Oh, Paradise Lost to Reina! She can’t survive this! She taps! She taps! Draven keeps the streak intact! Hell of a match!
WINNER: Tyler Draven
What? Reina just asked for a microphone. Oh my! She calls out Cameron Stone for apparently burying her on commentary. She’s getting in Stone’s face! She just splashed water all over Cameron Stone!! HE JUST DECKED REINA! CAM SLAM THROUGH THE ANNOUNCE TABLE!! I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING!! Cameron Stone leaves as officials and the f**king janitor come out to clean up the mess. That post-match angle was excellent!
MICHAEL KYZER VS. DAVID BRENNAN[C] IN A MANHATTAN STREET FIGHT - ****
Is that the Pope Throne?!? Wow. Kyzer had the best entrance of the night. Brennan got the loudest pop of the night. The bell rings and they aren’t moving. You can feel the tension in the air. Kyzer taunts Brennan to hit him but he misses and decks Tugarin Zmey! It looks like Kyzer whispered something to Zmey. Ahh, I see what Kyzer’s doing now, letting his minion do all the work for him. Smart. Now he’s taking some guy’s seat and eating his popcorn too. Nuclear heat! Big boot from Zmey to the champion! From what I can see, it looks like Kyzer has his feet propped up on the guardrail and he’s tossing popcorn into his mouth! Brilliant. Zmey beats up on Brennan a bit more while Kyzer barks orders from his seat. Oh, looks like Kyzer going to take part in the match now. He just dumped popcorn over the guy who he stole it from in the first place! #heeloftheyear
Zmey holds Brennan as Kyzer finally unleashed a flurry of punches to the champion from behind the guardrail! Brennan is down and Zmey has the steel ring steps in his hands! This cannot end well for the champion! Oh my! Brennan moved! I can’t see who got hit instead but somebody definitely got hit with steel! I’m certain Christa Adina took the hit, but I can’t tell from where I’m seating. A SMALL ASIAN CHILD JUST DROPKICKED KYZER OUTTA NOWHERE! WHO? WHAT? WHERE? WHY? HOW? Zmey sees this and grabs the child! KYZER JUST PUNCHED A CHILD ON PAY-PER-VIEW! WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?!? Chair shot from Brennan to Kyzer! The child is gouging Zmey’s eyes! Kyzer is back up and he makes eye contact with Brennan! THEY’RE SWINGING! HERE WE GO! They are trading shots at this point. Kyzer just hit Brennan with a fire extinguisher right in his knee! Now he’s taking all of Brennan’s oxygen by using the extinguisher on the champion! Pin attempt by Kyzer but Brennan kicks out. Kyzer just dropped down on Brennan’s hand. Looks like he just broke his middle finger. Brennan grabs Kyzer by the hair to free himself. Brennan is now looking for plunder under the ring. Oh! He tosses the ring bell over Kyzer’s head! Next is a chair! Kyzer grabs it and tries to sneak behind the champion. Oh my God! Brennan just pulled out a sledgehammer! What a visual! Brennan goes to swing but Zmey grabs the hammer out of the champion’s hands! Kyzer swings. HE MISSED! HE HIT ZMEY INSTEAD! BRENNAN WITH A CUTTER! KYZER KICKS OUT! They lock up – wow, they’re actually going to wrestle now? Kyzer just threw Brennan into the crowd! Oh boy. Kyzer grabs a chair nearby and swings but Brennan rolls out of harms way. Brennan grabs a chair and the two smash chairs like lightsabers! Brennan’s chair goes flying! Chair shot to the gut and then Kyzer drops the champion with a DDT on the chair! THE SMALL ASIAN CHILD IS BACK! CROSSBODY TO KYZER! KYZER JUST SIDESLAMMED THE CHILD THROUGH CHAIRS! NOW HE THREW HIM TOWARDS BRENNAN! WHO THE HELL IS THAT KID?! I’m seriously getting concerned for that child’s well being.
Sickening chair shot from Brennan to Kyzer! Another cutter from Brennan! Turgarin Zmey breaks the count! He tosses Brennan aside like a rag doll. Is that a sword?!? In a wrestling match?? Okay, I have officially seen everything now. Kyzer grabs a microphone and tells Brennan to submit to him. Zmey hands Kyzer a bottle of Jack Daniels. He pours the liquor all over Brennan. Here comes Lila Sleater. The crowd sounds happy to see her, which is a first. Kyzer raises the sword above his head. THE ASIAN KID IS BACK AGAIN! He just broke the bottle over Kyzer’s head! Zmey goes after the boy but he grabs the sword and keeps Zmey at bay. What the hell is going on here??? Kyzer moves and sees the broken bottle. He lunges towards Brennan and jabs the broken bottle into his forehead! Very gruesome spot. Kyzer looks to be done with Brennan. BRENNAN COUNTERS! BRENNAN COUNTERS! NEEDLE DAMAGE FROM THE CHAMPION TO KYZER! IT’S OVER! BRENNAN RETAINS!! Oh my God – WHAT. AN. EXPERIENCE. This match was all over the place but it’s worth going back and watching again. The storytelling here is the work of a master.
WINNER: David Brennan[c] to retain the WFWF World Heavyweight Championship
Wow. I am exhausted but man – what a show this was. The WFWF really pulled out the big guns in this show. It’s certainly much better than their last one. All three matches on the card were very well done but the main event – yeah, it’s the highlight of the show. Good job, WFWF. It’s nights like these that remind me why I love this business.
SHOW RATING: B+
