Let’s put aside the backstage politics and lack of consistent booking for a moment. By ‘96/97, WCW’s roster was unrivaled and ALOT of talent went unused during that time.
Anyone think a brand split would have worked for them in 1998? 1997 doesn’t seem like it would have worked with the whole Sting/nWo storyline, but by 1998, it seemed like a good time to possibly split the roster.
You’d have something like nWo Hollywood, Sting and Goldberg as the top attractions on Monday Nitro, while The Wolfpac, DDP and Bret could be the top stars on Thursday Thunder. This possibly could have given more time for guys like Jericho, Benoit, Booker, Guerrero, etc... to shine, though with Hogan on one show and Nash on the other it’s unlikely.
Anyone else think a brand split in 1998 could have possibly worked for the better for WCW than what we actually got?

Could it have worked? Absolutely. Would it have worked? Knowing WCW's track record...highly unlikely.

Potentially, and with no politics it could have worked. However the reality of it is,WCW was always doomed to fail.
Let’s say Hogan and other egos were exclusively on Nitro and Bret was the star of Thunder. If it was deemed that Thunder was the better show and Brets star was shining brighter than everyone else’s, you could guarantee he’d be moved to Nitro and jobbed in a heart beat. The same would apply to Jericho, Benoit et al should they start making progress.
You only need to look at the loose cannon story line. Hogan wouldn’t look twice at flyin’ Brian but was trying his hardest to get the Loose Cannon involved in the Dungeon of Doom storyline, once he became the hottest topic in wrestling.

It COULD have...no doubt. But the ability & more importantly the WILL to execute & enforce this was beyond WCW as a whole.

The idea when Thunder was conceived was to have Nitro be a nWo show and Thunder be the WCW show. That is straight from Eric Biscoff.

I believe that was the plan. Nitro and Thunder were supposed to have different rosters, but rumors are that backstage politics and guys not wanting to work Thunder really killed the momentum.

Thunder being introduced was seriously unpopular with the guaranteed $$ guys. Their way reduced work schedule(one of the big factors making WCW so attractive) was gone out the window.....
