..... that Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play.
Excuse my poor excuse for humour but it’s been 20 years since The Undertaker fought Mankind in their infamous Hell in the Cell match. I remember seeing it for the first time at a friends house. I was totally in shock as Foley sailed off the top of the cage and through the announcers table. Up until that point I’d never seen anything like that. And being slammed through the cage was just mental. I still prefer Micks HIAC match with Triple H though.
Was never really a fan of Foley (still aren’t) but do you think he’d have been as successful without this match?
What are your memories and opinions of this match?

in retrospect, McMahon is lucky that he wasn’t charged with manslaughter that night.

in retrospect, McMahon is lucky that he wasn’t charged with manslaughter that night. According to Vince, Undertaker, and Foley himself, Vince had no idea what was going to happen, so I don't think even if Foley would have died they could have done anything to Vince. Anyway, yeah, it was one of those moments that kinda defined his career....but in retrospect it was reeaaaaaally stupid. They didn't use a crash table like they do now with Shane and Foley did get really really hurt. I don't know why Foley felt like he needed to do a super big spot like that. Him and Undertaker always had great matches. I remember Foley saying he didn't feel like he could top Taker/HBK so he was gonna do something crazy right off the bat to set the tone....but again, him and Taker always had great matches and even excluding the two spots and the condition he was in, AND Taker had a broken ankle...the match was good. In my opinion, the spot off the top was unnecessary. The 2nd one through the cell was an accident, so I'm not gonna blame them for that. It legit broke.

It was an incredible match, but way to unsafe. What it the cell roof broke through not over the center of the ring but more towards the outer portions. Foley would have hit the concrete floor and probably died. The strength of what it could support should have been tested well before anyone set foot on the cell roof.

I wasn't a fan of the match. The first two bumps are pretty much anything people talk about with it. Most of the old timers always dismisses hardcore wrestling because "Well once you use the (insert weapon) where do you go from there?". I'm a fan of some hardcore wrestling but I feel like an old timer with this match. It's not the worst Hell in a Cell match I've seen but I can easily think of three right off the top of my head that I like more.

One of the most infamous matches in history. A lot of people say this is the best hiac match of all time, but I like the first ever one better. When I come home from work I will be watching this show. I like to watch shows like this on their anniversary.

Definitely the craziest match in company history. I just remember being stunned since nothing like that ever happened on a WWF show. 20 years later and it still holds up today IMO.
I also remember one fan at ringside yelling at Vince when he came to down to check on Foley he's like ''You got your rating now McMahon!''

What I will say is this was the night that the Hell in a Cell became a classic. Don't get me wrong HBK and Takers match was great but his one with Mankind stamped it as a brutal, fearsome match.
Foley's 2 falls proved just how dangerous the Cell was.

I remember watching this event VIVIDLY live at 1am over here. In fairness t was a great card and I really enjoyed this match in particular. Those were 2 leap out of the seat moments for me. Taker vs Mankind ALWAYS delivered.
As for it being the best HIAC? I rank HBK vs UT & Brock vs Undertaker above it. Actaully? I enjoyed HHH vs Cactus & Batista vs HHH more too..

I still remember vividly watching this at a friends' house. We had a big stack of Papa John's pizza and a few Playboy's. Ahh, 1998. Good times.

I remember calling the cable company to order. Had 2 stuffed crist pizzas from Pizza Hut and waited for my friend who no showed me. I had a full belly when Foley was tossed off the cage and I lost my shit. I thought he was dead.
This was my 10th birthday gift, and probably one of the most memorable PPV moments ever.

In my opinion, the spot off the top was unnecessary. The 2nd one through the cell was an accident, so I'm not gonna blame them for that. It legit broke. Pretty sure Foley explained his mindset going into that match in his first book. He was at kind of a rough point in his career back then. Yes, he was was just coming off back-to-back PPV main events against Austin, but I don't think he was thrilled with the reception their feud was getting. The business was changing as the Attitude Era was in full swing. Foley admitted that he felt lost, unsure if he'd be able to adapt to the new direction the industry was heading towards. He told a very interesting story about the night after WM14 that had him second guessing if the business had passed him by. The Outlaws and X-Pac beat the crap out of him and Terry Funk inside the steel cage. Even though DX was still heels, they were getting huge ovations for the beatdown. Then as Foley and Funk were laying in the middle of the ring the crowd began to filter out thinking the show was over. The announcer got on the mic and told them not to leave as Stone Cold was still to come which got a huge roar. Meanwhile, poor Foley and Funk just got their asses kicked and nobody gave a damn. In his defense, that KOTR match was totally thrown together without much build. Foley had just done a month-long program with Stone Cold as Dude Love and all of a sudden he was back to portraying Mankind for some reason. Taker was also dealing with a pretty serious foot injury at the time which really limited his mobility. The combination of him having lost most of his heat coupled with Taker's physical limitations had Foley scared that their match would be a stinker in comparison to the first Hell in a Cell match. That's when he thought of the idea to start the match on top of the cell. Foley didn't necessarily want to steal the show, he was just worried they would fall short of expectations and figured any risks to his body were worth it.

Wow, I was 18 at the time...Im old I was 17, I actually went with a few neighborhood friends who we used to go to wrestling shows together with since the 80's to drive down there (we actually had aisle seats). It was such a good PPV IMO. Also, we went to Raw the next night. So we saw Kane's full WWF title reign in person you could say.

Man,I'm old enough to feel ways about this match now lol. That was my 16th summer, and a damn good one in many ways. It's so bizarre to look back at this, having knowledge of it now that I couldn't just hop online and get the scoop on it. Foley was certainly dedicated to the business.
