Prichard just talked about this yesterday. I didn't know he WAS supposed to go through the top of the cage. But..... he was supposed to get choke slammed 3 times making it breakdown more and more until it finally went through.
Also what made Prichard choke up is when Foley was done with the match he apologized for not doing the thumb tack spot. Then Prichard had to tell him he did do the tack spot.
When Foley asked Undertaker what he thought when he went through the cage Undertaker said "I thought I killed you."

Watched it live on PPV. Needless to say my friends and I were as shocked as everyone else. Couple thoughts :
1) Did it make Foley's career in the WWF? Yes and no. He was already hugely over, already a KOTR finalist, already a tag champion, one of the few to beat Taker multiple times, and was a huge merchandise seller. However, I fully believe this led indirectly to him becoming world Champion, as I've read in several places that Vince put the Belt on him, even for a brief time, as a "Thank You" for all he did for the company and for putting his body on the line for Vince. And like it or not Foley will ALWAYS be remembered for that spot.
2) Yeah, Vince had no knowledge of this. Foley came up with the spot, and Taker was initially against it. Foley was out of shape and in pain. Taker was working with a broken ankle. Foley was convinced the match would suck unless they did something dramatic. That's why he wanted them to start outside the cell on top of it (rather than inside) , and the toss off the top. Gotta remember too, this was only the 2nd HIAC match in WWF history at that point, and the first was considered a classic. Foley felt if they stunk up the joint it might kill any momentum for future HIAC matches.
3) As much as it's remembered for the throw off the cage (and to a lesser extent the chokeslam through the top ), I also remember the "Zapruder Tooth" that magically transported from his mouth to his nose, and the sight of Terry Funk's sneakers laying in the ring after he took a chokeslam.
