According to Wikipedia, he went into semi retirement in 1988 to focus on running a bowling alley. Returned to the wrestling around 1990 with the NWA and retired around 1995 to become a road agent.
I remember reading that he was in a backstage argument with Vader, whom he decked.

He left the WWE at the end of 1987 to do the bowling alley thing, that is correct.
Came back in 1990 for WCW to be with Sting, JYD and the Steiners. Was there maybe six months if that, and left to wrestle for indy feds until he got with the UWF that Herb Abrams was starting up. He was there for 1991, and a bit of 1992 I wanna say.
In 1992 when Jim Cornette started up Smoky Mountain Wrestling, he had Orndorff wrestle there. As a matter of fact, the finals were Orndorff vs. Brian Lee for the SMW Title, with Lee winning it.
Then he got the gig with WCW in late 1992 and was with WCW until it ended in 2001. Of course he retired in late 1995 from active competition and was a back stage dude and trainer for WCW then.

It makes me wonder how much he was making as a wrestler back then to leave the industry. The WWF was so damn hot in 1987 they were practically printing money.
Unless I'm totally underestimating the popularity of bowling in the 80s.

His atrophy ruined his career. I saw him for Hogans 50th(or 60th birthday party on RAW in Portland a couple years ago) he had a bald head and huge mustache. His arm looks like a 14 year old who lifts a little.
The last time I saw him wrestle was in wCw as an agent, and his atrophy was very evident then.

Yeah his injury was the main cause. He has said on his shoot interview with RF he couldn't get the time off needed to rehab it properly and his physique was shrinking like hell. So he had to go.
Pity....Orndorff was one hell of a talent.

I believe Orndorff left WWE just before wrestlemania 4 in 1988. But I could be wrong?
