Hello all, after reading some opinion articles today that basically said RIP to the music industry, a statement was made often that I didn't believe. People kept saying that music doesn't hold as much weight with the youth today, as though it did for generations past like myself. Is that true, in y'alls view? I figure kids are always listening to music, but maybe that doesn't mean they can't live without it? If so, what happened?
Music defined me as a youth, and is my voice of expression today, it means a lot to me. Back in the day, whom you listened to built easy friendships and rivalries.
Anyhoo, I look forward to all of your inputs. Thanks a lot.

For me linkin park is the one band in particular that comes to mind who has had an impact on my life and many other people for that matter. I believe music does still have an impact on people. Although the question may not be 'does music as a whole' but does 'today's style of music.' Is it as meaningful as it once was, whereas singers would once write songs about struggle and fighting inner demons, compared to today's standards it's more about having money and flashy cars and a posh house. That's just my interpretation as I think more people can relate to something they are going through than a lifestyle they'll never have. I'm also not targeting all current music, only a select few.

I disagree. I dont listen to popular music from today, so I don't think it effects me all that much. But kids today are all in on the lifestyle that modern music (mostly rap) promotes. Its pushed and pushed and pushed that's how you're supposed to live life and I think its damaging. Tons of people think acting like a thug is okay because that's what they see on TV and the Internet.

As someone who works around many kids around the ages of 13-15, I can say that kids do love music and are always talking about it. Music still impacts society and still shapes the way many people look at the world.

It always amazes me the way this conversation continues to breathe and garner the responses that it does. Vapidity is nothing new in the music industry. Every generation has seen its dichotomy between artists using the medium as a vehicle of self expression and figures utilizing it as a launchpad toward stardom and money. Every song of the moment you could pinpoint today has parallels dating back to the 90s, the 80s, and beyond. There will never be a lack of music created with emotional and expressive intent - it may not always grace the airwaves, but it'll always be there for those willing to seek it out, just as the flash in the pans will always be there for the casuals looking for something to bob their head to on the way to work.

I think it is,but unfortunately it's telling kids to get face tattoos and drink whatever that purple Sprite is. I would go through my child's music and get rid of anyone called Lil.

Kind of like every song Billy Joel ever wrote. I've found something I can relate to in every song.

I think music will always have an impact on people. But at the same time I don't think we will see people that will make an impact on our society like a Marvin Gaye or Elvis Presley or Dylan. I think that the landscape has changed too much. I think a better question would be, does the youth of society value music as much as past generations? I think everyone is guilty of playing music as background music or to have it on. But I know me and a few friends that at least once a day we put a record on and we just listen to it. Lay down on the floor and just listen or sit in a comfortable chair with headphones on and just listen and do nothing else.

If there's a video then I'll watch it. But audio only, then I'll multi-task.

unfortunately i think it does... I mean i hear kids mumble rapping all the time... some are asking mum and dad for a 'face tattoo' for Xmas too...
but i wouldn't say is as much as before, we have many more freedoms nowadays, back in the day music was used as real expression and trend setters that related to the world at the time you know what i mean?

I appreciate all y'alls responses. It is interesting to see that most agree it does mean something still. That is positive to know music does still hold weight. I think Superjoker pulled it all together in my head with the "more freedoms" line. It still means something, but we can have other outlets now that are just as visible and meaningful for some folks, but others will fly the music flag forever. I guess I never saw the change like that. For me though, music will always be a lifestyle movement. Punks, Goths, Metalheads, etc. They helped me find a way to define myself when I felt lost and like a ghost. Tower Records has it right.... No Music. No Life. At least for me.
