A more simpler time, as a kid I would hear "oh it isn't real" from other kids that didn't watch and adults. However, I always spoke in kayfabe with friends, we believed it was real even though deep down we knew it wasn't. I remember being so sad and upset when The Rock got taken out after Wrestlemania 17. I didn't know he was filming a movie cause I didn't have internet and I taught he was gone for good.

Yeah I thought it was real in the 80s and early 90s. I also knew some people who would say it was fake. I didn't want to believe it and finally did especially with the rapid rise of AOL.

I thought Edge was crippled or was like killed at Summer Slam 2008 with The Undertaker.
I wondered how The Undertaker and Kane show up to family gatherings and how they interacted together.
I wasn't sad when Shawn lost to Undertaker, I kept telling everyone he was going to TNA.
I thought Hogan could not be defeated or ever loss
I wondered how Triple H didn't go to jail for attacking Orton in his house
I was freaking out Edge would get drafted to ECW in 2009 at the Draft

Then at Wrestlemania 6 I was like ...wth! Then he lost to the Undertaker in 91, but by then I was getting annoyed with his third title run, which was lackluster.

I didn't find out wrestling wasn't real until late 92(I got into it in early 91). I didn't stop watching because I thought to myself "if thousands of people are taking the time to go to arenas there can't be anything wrong with watching this".

My brother would put me in plenty of wrestling holds and performs all types of suplexes and powerbombs and they hurt so I had no reason to believe that wrestling was anything less than legitimate.

As a 9 year old I lost my mind when I saw The Radicalz debut in the WWF. I had just watched them on WCW seemingly a week before, I didn't think that was possible at all and didn't think they left WCW. I thought it was an invasion type thing (like the DX invasion). Talking of invasions, the WWF vs WCW/ECW Inaugural Brawl at Invasion 2001 I thought was real and the WWF had a legit chance of going out of business. Lol. My dad kept telling me it would never happen. I even prayed the night it was going on. Then watching it the next day after taping it I couldn't believe Austin betrayed the WWF. Then I figure it was a 5 all draw. But then quickly realised there was no real chance the WWF could really lose.....
Ah well I was dumb and young....

I thought Ken Shamrock had an actual license to kill. Like he carried it around in his wallet and showed it to Police if he was ever caught at the scene of a murder. I thought Kane and Undertaker were actual brothers and Kane burned the house down that their parents lived in.
Couldn't believe it was fake when I found out this afternoon.

I thought Earthquake's Vertical Splash was as fatal as a gunshot and he was really sending all those jobbers to the hospital
I didnt understand how Sgt Slaughter was a good guy in GI Joe but a bad guy in wrestling
I thought they got Kamala from the jungle

While I knew it wasn’t real, but back in 1982 I still got sucked in to when Captain Lou put a bounty on Superfly and Ray Stevens attacked and piledrove Snuka on the concrete floor.

No lie, I really thought Val Venis got his dong cut off by that Samarai sword. But my earliest time when I thought wow this is real and I legit got tears in my eyes as a kid was when Shawn micheals super kicked Marty janetty and threw him through the barbershop windows. Also whenever papa Django came out I thought voodoo was real. I was about 6 at the time.

The Lou/Snuka stuff was well done. Kayfabe was so respected back then. Internet has ruined the fun in alot of ways. When a wrestler lost, they lost. Now if wrestler loses a match 15 websites claim they're being punished for a back stage incident etc etc

I never believed wrestling was real - one of the rules of me watching it as a kid was that it was established that wrestling was like a comic book, and that there is no excuse for acting violently.
it wasn’t until Bret Hart got screwed that I started comprehending the theatrics of it.

I suspected there was some bullsh*ttin' afoot when Undertaker limped after the attack from Giant Gonzales. I thought he was really dead and he couldn't feel anything. This didn't prevent me from suffering from depression from RR '94 until Summerslam. Later on,I swear that I saw Sid and Vader stop brawling and do a handshake/back pat thing as soon as they got behind the curtain at a live event. There was just enough light on the curtain.

When Jimmy Snuka was a guest on Buddy Rogers' Corner & he talked. It blew my mind because I actually thought he couldn't communicate at all. And until about 15 years ago, I thought Ivan Koloff was a real Russian.

I'm so glad to read this. I have a three year old son, and if he happens to gravitate toward this spectacle, this is exactly how I intend on introducing it to him.

The storyline that I believed wholeheartedly was the Brian Pillman stealing Goldust's wife and keeping her as a hostage of sorts, when Goldy had to win her back. Truly a terrifying thing to see at 12.
