Before I get ECW styled crucifying, Austin - Rock at WrestleMania 17 felt very inconclusive to a lot of stories of the past year. Even, the Austin-Triple H feud didn't feel right just ending at No Way Out 2001. Triple H and The Rock on and off had been at war for the WWF Championship for the past year. It just felt like Austin-Rock didn't feel conclusive to the past year of storylines. Of course Austin-Rock sequel made total sense, but it would of made more sense at WrestleMania 16 if anything. I just felt Rock Vs. Triple H Vs. Steve Austin on a story basis would of made more sense to headline WrestleMania 17.

I agree.
Vince wanted Austin vs Rock so he rushed through Austin vs HHH & Hurriedly took the strap off Kurt Angle. Now Austin vs Rock was THE match....no doubt but it ended up being horrible to me because if THAT ending which made zero sense to this day.I don't care what anyone says....the fandom totally rejected it too.

Coming up on its silver anniversary, Summerslam 1993.
That might be one of the most inconclusive main events ever. Lex was pushed to the moon overnight as they prepared him to be the patriotic successor to Hogan. No chance in hell that he was leaving Summerslam without the WWF title.
Of course, we know the ending. He knocks Yokozuna out cold with his loaded forearm and wins via countout. Yoko remains champion.
I still say that after all the effort they put into the whole Lex Express angle, having him not win the belt was a dumb call. However, to me the dumbest part of the whole situation was the post-match "celebration." Balloons falling from the sky, Lex being hoisted onto the shoulders of other wrestlers waving the American flag as Vince goes hysterical on commentary. They really played up that BS ending as if we just witnessed something historic.
If they insisted on the countout finish, the better aftermath would have been to have Lex appear visibly upset at the conclusion of the match. As those other wrestlers came into the ring to celebrate and the balloons fell, have him look angry and almost disgusted that he didn't finish the job by taking the belt off the evil foreigner.
By making Luger look so happy just because he won, he kind of looked like an idiot who didn't really care about becoming the WWF Champion.

As a 13 year old I was absolutely convinced Luger was gonna have a glorious victory at Summerslam 93 and dethrone Yoko. I taped it and watched it the next afternoon.....I was so confused & disappointed. It was the start of me getting really disinterested for a year or two.

They really played up that BS ending as if we just witnessed something historic. I still remember the feeling when I watched this. It was the first time I was confused by wrestling. I was ten years old and I'd been watching for two years or so at that point, so I'd seen at least a few instances of champions retaining when they lost by countout, and the babyface always sold it by being angry. I just didn't get why Lex and everyone was celebrating his failure to win. I was fully on board with the Lex Express as well, and I don't think I was very invested in a top WWF babyface after that until HBK did the post-concussion angle a few years later.

WrestleMania 2000:
The world was ready for the Rock to become THE babyface Champion of the Company ... The fans WANTED it, they NEEDED it...they could SMELL it!
Instead, it becomes even more of a corporate McMahon soap opera as suddenly Vince turns heel and helps Triple H retain the title to create peace in the family. After month and MONTHS of Vince vs Triple H, Shane vs Vince, Stephanie vs EVERYONE , now they're one big happy family again and The Rock's ascension is held back another month. Granted, Backlash did monster business with the Triple H vs Rock 1-on-1 rematch, but at the time the Mania ending just felt wrong. The McMahon's literally hijacked the ending to WrestleMania

But some of this had to do with Austin gonna be in Rocks corner but he wasn't cleared( I believe they found out in late Feb he wouldn't be able to participate)& Vince loaded the ME with McMahons to help "sell it"...…. Rock vs HHH sold itself FFS. But according to many? Backlash 2000 is how the WM2000 ME was originally envisioned. It worked out better....crowd at WM2000 were f*ckin stone dead.....crowd @ Backlash were piping hot.
