What did you all think about the Mr. America (aka. Hulk Hogan) gimmick back in 2003?  I actually liked his gimmick compared to most who probably hated it, but come on it was meant to be silly and it was a way to annoy and avert getting fired by Mr. McMahon. Plus we got the Real American theme back an it gave Hogan something a little more fresh to do than his regular gimmick. Hogan unfortunately still thought he was above everyone else when he saw his Wrestlemania bonus (if I recall) and it was what he would pay his driver. If Hogan stuck around, worked limited matches there could've been some decent feuds like with the Big Show. For example, the Big Show could've won the US title just as he did at No Mercy, and thereafter the following month have Mr. America win the US title off of him leading to Wrestlemania XX between John Cena and Mr. America with a good passing of the "American hero" torch and Mr. America revealing he was Hulk all along. |

It was hokey but it's something that fit Hogan's overall character so for that I'll give it a pass. It didn't have much a shelf life beyond the feud with Vince/Piper but yeah they could've squeezed a Big Show or even Brock feud out of it.

I thought that Mr. America came back into the WWE at the right time.
Hulk Hogan just left, and I remember Mr. America from years ago being The Patriot. Of course, he was a lot bigger, tanned and had blonde facial hair now, but still same old Patriot.

Accordng to Bruce Prichard, apparenlty Hogan himself really liked the gimmick and the angle they were heading for with Vince McMahon at the time, but Vince didnt "get it" and wanted to pull the plug on it. It was supposed to lead to a Mr. America vs Vince match at, I think, Great American Bash that year. That disagreement over creative, coupled with the Mania payoff and other stuff, lead to Hogan quitting.

wasn’t that big on it, as I found it hokey. far preferred his moment winning the tag team titles with edge, which really helped edge’s climb through the ranks.

It was so hokey that it circled around back to awesome. My favorite part was them saying that he used Pat Patterson's old entrance theme.

They got in trouble with Marvel for using Hulk so why did they make him a Captain America rip off? (Were they trying to get sued?!)
But besides that, it was okay for a while but eventually wore out it’s welcome. Plus it was stupid, why did they even do this angle? Just leave the Hulkster as he was (expect the voodo child theme, please get back real american!!)
