We all know Ryback was red hot in the summer of 2012 by killing jobbers left and right.
Meanwhile, Punk just turned heel and Cena was in the midst of trying to dethrone him. Cena then got hurt, and Ryback was suddenly thrust into the main event scene with Punk where they had no intentions of him ever going over Punk.
Despite this, Ryback remain over big with the crowds for the next 8 months before feeding him to Mark Henry at WM29 (one of the worst WM booking decisions ever) and then to Cena in multiple PPVs.
Yes we all know the stories of Punk getting injured by him, but what if he was never thrust into the main event for an injured Cena? Would he have fared better with a slower push through the midcard with a run with a midcard title before pushing towards the main event?
I like to think he would have, but then again it’s a head scratcher as to why he was depushed when he had the look and was over like crazy. Punk always complained about him, but I don’t recall anyone else ever going off on him for being unsafe.

He would have won either the Royal Rumble or Elimination Chamber match to challenge Big Show at Mania for the World Title. What happens after that is up in the air because Dolph was an extremely hot act, and soon as he cashed in on Ryback to end his streak, the fans would have taken Dolph's side and Ryback would have gone heel around the same time he did anyway.

Ryback got over huge at a bad time, they were hell bent on Rock vs Cena 2 at WM, Shield debuting as a HHH project, and Cm punk throwing hissy fits backstage about him all derailed his push. The pops and chants Ryback got were huge yet they had him lose every PPV match he was in. A wasted opportunity to create a main event guy organically flushed down the toilet.
The guy got over huge quick and was in the main event with in a few months, yet here we are in year 4 of the Roman Reigns main event push that is still in progress.

I never saw the appeal in him. He wasn’t very good in the ring and I as far as his character went I didn’t think it had any personality. The guy was just big with no other qualities to be a main event talent.

he just was a whole lot of bark with little bite, but it was fun while it lasted.

He was Goldberg light, and Goldberg imo was garbage as well. The only thing about Ryback, he had some really cool singlets and action figures.

One of them instances where he could have been a great main event talent but was also a piece of s*** as a person, so I am happy he's gone. Why do you say that? My son and I loved him. He wasn't the most talented in ring performer. I can't believe Vince didn't strap a rocket to the guy.

The person who did RVD singlets also did Ryback's. So that's why they looked so cool. That is one thing about RVD and Ryback, is the figures that could be released constantly with different attires would be rad to collect, but also a pain in the ass too I bet! haha
As for Ryback's push and such, the dude was super over. It could be argued that he should have won the 2013 Royal Rumble and not Cena. Cena vs. Rock at Mania with Ryback vs. Punk for the WWE Title would have made for two big matches. But I suppose we did get Undertaker vs. Punk and Rock vs. Cena for the WWE Title which is probably bigger.

I hate how they fumbled the ball with Ryback. He was red hot, super over with the crowd. Then at Mania he lost to Mark Henry, a somewhat questionable outcome. Not a bad decision, depending on how it was done, but really questionable because Ryback was on a roll and it just made more sense for him to get the win at Mania. Then he goes after Cena on Raw, I don’t think this was a bad decision until the next week where it was obvious that they were turning Ryback heel and feeding him to Cena. Instead of turning him heel, if this was done in a Hogan vs Warrior fashion I think this would have worked. Ryback going after Cena because he wanted competition and wanted go up against the biggest competition he could find, I think that would have worked. But the sudden heel turn wasn’t good at all for Ryback.
But to answer the OP’s question, I think a slower build would have definitely been better. They booked themselves into a corner at with Ryback vs Punk at HIAC. They didn’t want Ryback to beat Punk and take the title but they didn’t really want anyone beating Ryback at the moment, so they did the confusing Brad Maddox finish.

I Think if Ryback went over he would still be with the company I often wonder why they didn't pull the trigger on him capturing one of the world titles he was insanely over.

They had a chance to really create something great with Ryback in that HIAC match with Punk but they just weren't interested. Sometimes losing can be the greatest way to get over(Hart vs Austin @ WM13) & there was a way to do that here with Punk vs Ryback because of the Anaconda vice.
They had a shot to make him look like an absolute warrior here & gain the fans respect 100% but as I say? they just couldn't be bothered. The less said about his booking vs Henry the better.....that was just incredible to witness. Genuinely couldn't believe what I was seeing...the pop for him lifting Henry was NUTS. Vince flushed it down the toilet.....
