Bret Hart's book, which was comprised of his notes, cites that Haku was released around late 1990. I think he was probably let go but then come Royal Rumble time they needed some extra bodies. He really didn't do anything of note except the WrestleMania match.
I recall him being on PTW and the weekend morning squash shows during the late Spring/early Summer during 91. Like this match here...
And yeah Honky was decent as a heel commentator.
