Y'all know I keep my life a pretty open book, and I don't really get serious unless something is really bothering me. Well today, something really is bothering me.
If you're an American, or you follow American news, by now you've heard on the news about the opioid epidemic and the fetenyl and heroin epidemic that's been plaguing our country.
So I woke up this morning to find out that one of my cousins, Jike, passed away this morning, just a day after the anniversary of his aunt's death. Both went the same way. OD'd in the living room of Jike's mother's, my other aunt's, house. His brother, also an addict, was the one who found him dead. And Jike just had a baby last week, Avery, who'll never know her dad.
Drug addiction, mental illness, and suicide can often go hand in hand in hand. Suicide comes in many forms, and it's not always intentional. Drug addiction can take you from your family and leave the same exact scars, even if when you take 'em you don't expect to overdose.
If you're battling addiction, mental illness, or have thoughts of suicide, just pick up the phone. As someone who's used the suicide hotline personally at my darkest of hours, it's awkward to do, sure, but it's better to talk to a stranger and seek help than not and put your family and friends through the fear of if you'll recover. Or worse, what you'll be putting your family through if you don't.

I don't want to sound like I'm preaching here. It's not my place to tell anyone what they can and can't do. But I can at least request. Don't put another family through this. I'm talking about my family in this post, my personal life, but I also consider the members of WF my family too, and I never want to see a thread about one of our members dying (something I've seen two too many of since I joined), but especially from something like an OD or suicide. There are people and places that can help you. Like rehab, the call is not a guaranteed fix everything as it wasn't in Jike's case, but it's a start. Please. No more.

I know this won’t ease the pain of losing a family member, but I’m very sorry for your loss.
Addiction and mental illness are both a terrible disease that need to be addressed with complete and total love and support, especially if it is a family member. Ridicule and outcasting will only make these issues worse.

I had a loved one go through depression back in 2010//11. Very serious issue that really took a toll on my entire family. Thank the good Lord she pulled through and is now living a healthy and happy life.

Very sorry for your loss, truly, terrible for the families.
I think we need to get tough on the dealers of drugs, i mean real tough, we have to stop with the softly softly approach, too many youngsters get hooked by these scumbags and it ruins not only their lives but often those around them too

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m going through a divorce now. I found myself near a bridge, and as easy as it can to say “everything would be easier...” thr truth is, everyone around you will have it harder than you do currently. Suicide prevention is key through conversations and help.

I'm so sorry for you loss, I feel awful for his daughter especially. I've been struggling with depression/anxiety since I was 14 so I really appreciate you raising awareness for the issues that people often overlook, even on a site as seemingly random as a wrestling forum. The more we talk about mental health issues, the more normalised it becomes in society and less of a 'taboo' subject that people tiptoe around.

Sorry for your loss. I feel your pain, I had a cousin and uncle pass away, one from an OD the other from problems caused by a chronic drug issue. Substance abuse really isn’t taken seriously enough these days. Seems like culture is more concerned with glorifying it than actually solving the problem. I hate the fact that more isn’t done to help people that are suffering in these situations.

I'm sorry to hear, Shawn. I've had some instances in my family where there was a member hooked on painkillers and opioids and another (who happened to be my brother) who tried to kill himself twice. This stuff is so prevalent today and anything to prevent it is crucial, especially the hotline. I hate to hear that someone else is going through it.

I hate the fact that more isn’t done to help people that are suffering in these situations. Not to get political, but everyone knows I'm not a Trump fan by now. That being said, I don't know if it's under his command or the people who he appointed to positions, but the DEA, ATF, CDC and FBI have done an admirable job in the last few years from mid Obama Era to now in tackling quack doctors and pharmacies that weren't asking questions when large amounts of opioids were being dispensed. But it's much, much harder to nail down the heroin and laced with fetenyl heroin dealers and makers because that's entirely underground. It would take a billion stings to take that down, and I have no clue if it's just a lack of desire or lack of manpower to do it. They'll jail dealers, but can't nail the kingpins, which is one of the major issues. |

What makes it worse is how heartbreaking it is not just for Avery, but for Jike's mom, grandad, and his two brothers. His grandad has had to bury his sister, Jike's aunt (his mom's sister/grandad's other daughter) and now he has to bury Jike, all from overdoses. No child should be buried by their parents, so I feel for Aunt Julie having lost a sister and son, but great Uncle Leonard has outlived his daughter and grandson. Plus, one of Jike's brothers is also an addict, so we're all afraid yet hopeful. Hopeful that losing his brother is a wake up call and he stops, but afraid because the odds are 50/50 on if he goes clean or if this sends him into a tailspin. It's just a depressing mess. |

Same here. People like to call me a SJW and stuff like that, and maybe I am, but this is something that nobody should have to suffer through, both the addict, and the family of the addict. as someone who has lost way too many friends to drug use and specifically this opioid crisis that’s occurring, I can relate all too well.
drug use is used for mitigating pain. if we can help those around us with what causes them pain, we can decrease the amount of self destructive tendencies. so make sure to care about those around you.
