As a kid I hated the Warrior and was a huge fan of Rude. After he hits the rude awakening, Heenan offers to open the cage door, Rude waves him off and clubs the cage. He could have climbed out, but he turns around to jump and attack the Warrior. On his second attempt, Warrior counters and hits Rude in the solar plexus. That's right above the breadbasket, folks.
If he climbs out and wins, how do you book his title run? Does he lose to Warrior at the Royal Rumble? Does he lose to Hogan?

If he were to go over Warrior? The Cage would be the perfect place to do it because Warrior could have been protected AND they could have set up an ultra hot rematch @ Royal Rumble.
However.....Vince had seemingly already set his sights on Sgt Slaughter vs Hogan for the strap at this time...which confuses the hell outta me still!!
Ultimate Warrior never really had a good shot at the top IMHO. I've always said it. The focus of Summerslam 1990 was not the title match....it was 100% Hogan vs Earthquake.

I see why they did it. I thought Rude would have been a better champion. My first thought as an 8 year old was, Rude could have beat him but decided not to. I never saw Warrior as a threat after that

Any chance Rude had at getting the belt would be the SNME that aired in July that year. Him winning the belt briefly before dropping it to Warrior at SSlam in the cage would be the best bet if they went that route.
Imagine Rude wearing that classic winged eagle belt. Would've fit like a glove.

I loved Rude but this was the major problem with Warrior at this time. Earthquake was pushed as the top heel. Warrior should have faced Earhquake at SummerSlam. Instead, it went to Hogan and Warrior/Rude felt like second fiddle. Rude and Earthquake would have both been far better options as a heel champ than Slaughter.

Putting Hogan vs. Earthquake DIRECTLY right before Warrior vs. Rude killed the fans too.
Like yeah, the fans cheered for Warrior, but they were just cheering like crazy for Hogan with the Hogan pose down right before. So the Warrior vs. Rude match almost felt kind of flat for being the main event.

I think we actually talked and messed around during the ME and didn't really pay attention.

If they really wanted to give Warrior a chance as champion, he should have gotten the Earthquake feud in the summer of 90 and they should have kept Hogan away until late fall, maybe a big return at Survivor Series or even holding off until he enters the Rumble in January. Obviously Hogan wasnt going to let those pay days slide though (to his credit)

Not much come out of that because it was Bravo vs. Warrior feud at the time. I did happen to find one Earthquake vs. Warrior match that happened in 1991. It wasn't a mat classic, but it could have been a decent PPV match.
