This is a question for those of us who purchase movies to stream.
What's next after streaming? I purchased a hand full of VHS tapes before going all in on DVDs. DVDs seemed more convenient and took up less space so it seemed much better than vhs.
I swore to myself I'd never buy a digital movie. They cost as much, if not more than dvd. But they are so convenient. If I buy Halloween on dvd I can only watch it if I'm near a dvd player. But if I buy the digital copy I can watch the movie anywhere. It's great!
So I started thinking. I bought Halloween on VHS, then on DVD, now as a digital copy. VHS tapes, the film gets damaged. DVDs the disc rots or scratches. But digital? Do I have a copy of the film, at my fingertips, for ever now? I cant picture what will knock digital streaming into obscurity.
Thoughts?

They'll probably figure out a way to zap the movies and shows into our brains.
Streaming is great, I don't miss DVDs at all. I love buying digital copies of video games too because it avoids any clutter in having physical copies. Though some people still enjoy having the physical cases to display which I can see the appeal in too.

I personally enjoy CD's lying around especially for nostalgia's sake.

I see physical coming back if people realize streaming/digital dl can be taken from you at any time, but if not, maybe a vr flick? We already use 3d glasses, maybe we will be in the movie, for lack of a better analogy.

Say you violated the terms of service, lost the rights, etc. If your PSN account gets banned, you can't access any digital games you had bought through it anymore. Not much different with movies or music.

Halloween KingI hadn't heard this until a year ago or so, but it seems it is more like renting something until they decide to take it back. Unless, maybe when you buy it, it goes on your harddrive. It all seems to be a license issue, and something to do with Digital Rights Management, but it is stuff bound within Terms of Service. Stuff could go poof if a company goes out of business and it is on their servers and not yours, or their restricted devices ala Kindle. Surprisingly, Blu Ray also is DRM plagued, from what I am reading. There are a couple articles out there about the issue. Disney took an amazon digital download away at one point, but that was an isolated incident so far. Basically, our power is gone, and they have all the say now. That didn't work out well in the rental days, and I don't suspect trusting a corporation to do right by us will be a good idea now, either.

Not much different with movies or music. I'm having a hard time thinking of how you could get banned from a streaming video service. On the PSN you have the ability to message people. I can see how, if you bother someone, they would take action against you. But on say Amazon, where it's just you, how would you get banned?

With a video streaming service, it's more likely that the company hosting the content could lose the rights to whatever you purchased, thereby making you unable to access it. PSN was just an example of one way you could lose digital content you purchased.

The only other step I could imagine besides like it was mentioned by Valbroski direct into our brains is a Stark Trek Next Gen. holodeck type setup where you can walk around right in the actual movie lol.

I can see all media eventually just using one interface. so not too much different than where we’re at, but just more intelligently simplistic.

Has anyone used the Disc to Digital service from Vudu? If it's what I'm thinking of, yes I have done it before. It's the $1 for SD and $2 for HD correct?

Really easy, just open the app and scan the barcode on your case. Biggest drawback is that they limit you to 100 a year for some reason. Otherwise, it works pretty well and a gairly cost effective way to really easily convert your collection to digital. Personally, I've been working on setting up my own home media streaming with a nas connected to a raspberry pi running osmc. Lot more work that way, but I prefer the ability to customize the interface and such.

That's how i got them for $1 and $2. It was a few years ago that I did it for my dad so it probably changed. I own all of the Warner film noir box sets and he wanted them so I got all the digitals for him. Edit - Back on my PC and that promo I was speaking of ran from 2014-2017 so yeah the prices are back up.

I prefer/want a physical copy of my movie or game. I only have a handful of digital games & movies. Music I don’t buy anymore, I stream it.

I own zero digital movies and 3 digital albums. I buy the films I want to own on Blu Ray. I text the digital codes of movies to my friends who want to use them.

Lot more work that way, but I prefer the ability to customize the interface and such. Last I checked it was $2 for DVD, $4 for Blu-Ray or $4 if you want to upgrade your DVD to an HD digital copy. Then you can link you account to Movies Anywhere, which is a FANTASTIC service. It takes your movies from Vudu, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc and puts them all in one place. Now wherever I want to but a movie I buy it from the cheapest service, before I was stuck with Amazon (and later Vudu) because I didn't want all my content spread am over the place. Quazimoto where would beginners go to learn to design a PI media server? I've never even heard of OSMC. Is that the new name for XBMC?
