First off, this isn’t some crazy awesome fact, but I found it interesting. So my brother works for Tomy (toy company) and their Chief Brand Officer worked on the WWF Hasbro line.
He said they had to keep costs down and meet their 15% profit margin (my brother is still learning the business aspect so I’m not sure how correct his retelling is. He’s a toy designer). So they cut back on articulation and deco (paint, decals) and still came in at 14.8%. So then they made the decision to make the back of the cards black and white. And it saved them enough to get it over the 15%.
And that’s why the back of the cards of WWF Hasbros were black and white. It’s also something most fans probably already knew or figured out.

I get the black and white back to save money, but I highly doubt they where aiming for a 15% return. 85% on just getting the figure to market is just crazy numbers

I think that is a neat thing to learn. A lot more decisions went into seemingly simple things like a cardback than I knew. I guess at the price point, they weren't making hand over fist of dollars, but maybe that is why they did so well. As kids, we wanted to play with everything, so I could see most parties ok with the dichotomy of card colors.
