I'm sorry guys but there is no excuse for this. I have the utmost respect for Randy as a fighter, he's one of the worlds best, but there is no excuse for walking out. If he had a problem, try to work it out. They didn't sign Fedor so he just walks out? Stupid. He's not getting paid enough? Then tell them that and try to work something out, not just walk away. I don't know any of the facts right now, but this seems so selvish and greedy on Couture's part.

wow.
I think it is sad for Randy to have to quit to prove a point. But MMA fighters are paid ridiculously low compared to other athletes. Tito always bitched about his contracts for this exact reason. He said fighters hate him now but they will see the big picture years from now.
I would have loved to have seen Couture vs. Fedor...but Dana f***ed it up.

Just saw this on the TV. There Heavyweight Division is crap now. I wouldn't say that. They still have Nog, Arlovski, Sylvia(shrieks), Vera, Gonzaga, Kongo, Cro-Cop(maybe), etc. PLus a bunch of fighters that could potentially move up to heavyweight. Plus if rumors are true that Brock Lesnar has signed or at least will most likely sign with the UFC that will bring a lot of attention to the heavyweight division that is needed badly. He may only have one MMA fight under his belt but his name alone will bring a lot of hype and attention to any match he's involved in.

People should note that it appears Randy has RETIRED, not quit the UFC. Back in Jan this year he was quoted as saying he'd signed a four fight contract over two years so forget about him jumping to M1 to fight Fedor at least before Jan 2009.
I don't think it's the killer blow to Zuffa though, yeah Randy is a hugely respoected guy but he only has a few fights left surely. The UFC Heavyweight scene though suddenly looks a lot shallower than it did a few months ago. Randy was Champion, Fedor was meant to be coming in, Crocop was goping to clear up!!! However still got Nog/ Sylvia/ Vera/ Arlovski/ Gonzaga/ Herring/ Kongo which isn't exactly a terrible division in anyone's eyes. I just hope Nog wins the strap & then challenges Randy, he must be a bit put out that Randy doesn't see him as a challenge. For a long time Nog was seen as how Fedor is now & would be a great fight

You respect an egomaniac more for acting like a diva and demanding a pay raise now, then before? Just a couple of facts. - Randy Couture negotiated the contract himself. He agreed to these terms just a few months ago. Ortiz, Liddell, Hughes etc. all had their contracts set years before Couture signed again with the UFC to fight Sylvia. He knew what he was making and what they were making and agreed to it. - Randy Couture is making $250,000 per fight plus pay per view bonuses. If he gets fight of the night too, it's possible he's making $400,000 - $500,000 per fight. Do you have any idea how much money that is? I don't care how much anyone else makes. That is a lot of ing money for a paper champion. - Rich Franklin had an awful contract for years while he was the top middleweight, yet he didn't complain. He made enough money to get by, and that was fine for him. Couture is doing a lot more than getting by. Keith Jardine made $14,000 for beating Chuck Liddell. Couture is making $250,000 guaranteed by losing to Liddell twice. - This only became a problem because Randy Couture got a hollywood agent. Couture never complained about this prior and is just listening to the bullcrap the guy is feeding him, trying to get his client more money so he gets more money. - Randy Couture has nine months left on his contract, so he can't fight until July 2008, regardless of whether or not he's in the UFC. So if he was really leaving to fight Fedor, he can't do so for all that time. How do you respect that? The guy was the Heavyweight Champion of the company that made him a star, a celebrity and a rich man. You finish out your contract, fight your last two fights and then go after for Fedor if that's really what you want. But it's not, the guy is clearly a diva now.

You respect an egomaniac more for acting like a diva and demanding a pay raise now, then before? Just a couple of facts. Look, I'm not a Randy Couture "fan" in the traditional sense. I feel like he has been heavily over-rated after two wins against Tim Sylvia and Gabriel Gonzaga. I don't feel that he is the No. 1 fighter in the world, or even the No. 2 fighter in the world. I think he deserves praise for standing up for fighters and showing them that you don't have to sit and get paid less than what you're worth. - Randy Couture negotiated the contract himself. He agreed to these terms just a few months ago. Ortiz, Liddell, Hughes etc. all had their contracts set years before Couture signed again with the UFC to fight Sylvia. He knew what he was making and what they were making and agreed to it. It was also done before he thoroughly dominated the heavyweight champion and the No. 1 contender. He deserved more money, regardless of what contract he signed. The UFC makes enough money to pay him. They should be paying him like the top draw that he is. I agree, but he doesn't agree. If he believes he can make more elsewhere, why wouldn't he? - Rich Franklin had an awful contract for years while he was the top middleweight, yet he didn't complain. He made enough money to get by, and that was fine for him. Couture is doing a lot more than getting by. Keith Jardine made $14,000 for beating Chuck Liddell. Couture is making $250,000 guaranteed by losing to Liddell twice. Couture was/is also a WAY bigger draw than Rich Franklin. It's great that Franklin wants to fight for pennies on the dollar, but that's not Couture's fault. - This only became a problem because Randy Couture got a hollywood agent. Couture never complained about this prior and is just listening to the bull **** the guy is feeding him, trying to get his client more money so he gets more money. If it means we'll see Couture/Fedor, I'm all for it. - Randy Couture has nine months left on his contract, so he can't fight until July 2008, regardless of whether or not he's in the UFC. So if he was really leaving to fight Fedor, he can't do so for all that time. How do you respect that? You finish out your contract, fight your last two fights and then go after for Fedor if that's really what you want. But it's not, the guy is clearly a diva now. It's not like that fight was going to happen soon anyways. They'd need time to build it up, hype the company as a legitimate contender, etc. I think you do walk away if you should be getting more than you are, like he is.

That's just it, he shouldn't be getting more. If anything, he's being overpaid. Don't give me that "he's standing up for fighters" bullcrap. He's clearly looking out for himself because that's what his agent told him to do.
Guys like Frank Trigg were offered $4,000 per fight to compete in the UFC. Jardine only gets $14,000 for beating the biggest name in MMA history. Dennis Kang couldn't even get a UFC contract. Guys who have one or two bad losses on their record are reduced to fighting in B-level shows and making little money. Those are the people I care about. Hard-working fighters who are making less than a secretary does. I could care less about an arrogant millionaire who could make a million off two fights and is doing well with his training camp anyway.
And I think you missed the last point I was trying to make. Why is he leaving the UFC if the fight can't happen anyway? He should finish out his contract and then go where he pleases. It's the right thing to do.

He's clearly looking out for himself because that's what his agent told him to do. You know what, you're right in that part. He IS getting overpaid. But he's going to make more elsewhere. You're also right that he isn't standing up for fighters, that he's looking out for himself... But he is showing that other fighters don't have to sit on poor contracts. I completely agree. It's B.S. that some of the people fighting in MAIN EVENTS on UFC shows are making 1/20 of the money that Couture makes... But that's how it's going to be until the fighters start standing up for themselves. And I think you missed the last point I was trying to make. Why is he leaving the UFC if the fight can't happen anyway? He should finish out his contract and then go where he pleases. It's the right thing to do. The fight CAN happen eventually, just not now. I think he was making a point more than anything - that he doesn't need the UFC (or so he thinks). ------------------- By the way... A quote from Dana White... "Fedor has that mystique where people think he's No. 1, which I don't agree with," White told UFC.com. "I think that Fedor is completely overrated -- he's fought Mark Coleman (Pictures) and Matt Lindland (Pictures) in the last year, with Mark Hunt (Pictures) being his only legitimate opponent -- and I actually think that Randy Couture (Pictures) would have smashed Fedor." All I can say is "........" Fedor has beaten pretty much every legitimate heavyweight contender in the world. To say he's not the best is just stupid.

You know everyone thinks that Fedor would've been awesome in the ufc. Everybody thought CroCop and Shogun would be good, but they haven't fared well so far. The jury is still out on Henderson and Big Nog. What I'm saying is maybe Fedor wouldn't fare well in the ufc.

That's what's great about the sport. Fighter A could lose to Fighter B, but Fighter A could beat Fighter C, who beats Fighter B. As badly as Shogun lost to Forrest, I'd still pick him over Rampage if they fought. Even with Griffin's win, I could see any wrestler beating him, such as Ortiz doing it again. Meanwhile Rampage would knock out Ortiz if they ever fought. That's what makes MMA so great. So yes, someone in the UFC could beat Fedor. If I had to pick, I'd go with Gonzaga. Fedor is not aggressive enough and takes too long to push forward. Gonzaga could either take him down or pick his spot with the head kick.

I'm not saying Fedor is unbeatable... But he hasn't lost yet, in my eyes, and he's faced just about every legitimate non-UFC heavyweight in the world.
