Since there's a bunch of wrestlers in wwe that never wrestled the indys, was there anybody that surprised you that did?
Sheamus is one that comes to mind. I was really shocked that he wasnt just some guy they found working out at the gym.

Not really anyone I can think of honestly. Fandango is a guy who I was surprised to see had been on the grind as long as he has been but it's not like I'm shocked he spent time working places before he got signed, especially during the era he was signed. EC3 is a very similar deal. Wrestling is different now in 2018, though. There aren't too many well kept Indie secrets anymore because we have access to so much wrestling. Most wrestlers work some form of the Indies unless it's a guy coming straight off an NFL or powerlifting career, or something similar. Even Shayna Baszler worked some high profile Indie names in the short period between her MMA and WWE transition. If you look at the guys who have really come in lately, it's all been legit Indie stars sans a Velveteen Dream, who was the Tough Enough super fan, ala Miz. But Cole, reDRagon, Aleister Black, War Machine, Ohno, Ciampa, Gargano, Roddy, Ricochet, and then we obviously have the main roster guys like Rollins, Ambrose, Owens, Zayn, Cesaro, AJ, Bryan, and Joe. They just signed Punishment, Mia Yim, Chelsea Green and Matt ing Riddle. Everyone who follows Indie wrestling knows that group. This is coming off of them grabbing Deonna Purrazzo and Keith Lee, too. So it seems like most of the Indie talent coming into NXT is starting to be more on the obvious side. All of there other signings seem to be athletes from different sports with pretty much no experience at all.

If you want to call it that. He was working locally and then got a Tough Enough rub right after the competition was over with a couple of east coast shots. He hit the scene and was signed to WWE within a year, though. It's no different than Miz doing UPW. I don't really consider that working the Indies as much as I'd call that just getting trained and having some matches. I mean you're 100% right in that WWE wasn't the very first place he ever worked, but I wouldn't call him an Indie guy, either. I guess it's splitting hairs but I think of him as a WWE guy.

I remember for a few years, people saying Sheamus had signed with WWE when he hadn’t. He was one of the top guys on The Wrestling Channel in the U.K., because IWW was on there a lot.

None really. Most of the guys had to be seen or come from Somewhere. Most guys now are all signed from there

this is the opposite scenario, but I was totally blown away by the reemergence of Quebecer Pierre/PCO. just an amazing story of a guy getting his best runs at middle age and I wouldn’t have believed it could’ve been.

Eddie Guerrero when he got released by WWE and wrestled in the indies for a while and then came back. He always seemed to wrestled in every major wrestling company, would be crazy if somehow he wrestled in TNA while he was released.

That is surprising for me, never knew Sheamus wrestled in the indies. If I'm not mistaken, he feuded with Vampiro during his indy days.
A young Sheamus appeared in Angel, Devil, Hero, a Vampiro documentary from 2008.

ok... so to really answer this question... you would have to find someone you didn't know previously was in the independent scene... otherwise it wouldn't really be a shock... and well... while searching for wrestlers that would shock me... I didn't find any yet per-se... but I found something completely different that did shock me...

I swear I saw a HHH ppv match where there was some outside brawling and a young Sheamus without the mustache was a security guard. Probably how he got his foot in the door while he was working the independents. Patrick Clark is NOT just some "Tough Enough" superfan who got lucky. My god. Definitely. He debuted in ‘14 in MCW. Won their tag belts with Lio Rush in ‘15 I believe. Maybe he didn’t spend a decade out there like others, and MCW is one of the better Indy promotions, but it’s not as if he spent 3 weeks there and got signed to NXT.

November 13th 2006 edition of RAW from Manchester, England when DX were banned from the arena so they brought tickets from Cryme Tyme (and HBK spoke “jive”, ugh) Sheamus and (I think) Wade Barrett were used as bodyguards when DX got to ringside and were confronted by Coach.
