So for the life of me I couldn’t remember how or when The Rock turned babyface in 1999. In the beginning of the year, he was a nasty ass heel feuding with Mankind as a member of the corporation. Then, by the following year he’s the biggest babyface in the company.
I was certainly watching at the time and can remember most of Rocky’s turns but this one was completely lost in my memory. I guess it’s pretty much this on an episode of Raw from April:
Do you guys remember what else led to this?
Let us discuss.

it eventually led to the taker/rock match at KOTR I believe, which was actually a very solid match imo.
the attitude era moves intimidatingly fast - skip three months worth of content and people’s character arcs have completely flipped half the time.

I like how Rock just blasts Chyna in the face with a punch in that Raw clip.
Because, attitude.

Pretty much after Shane cost Rock the belt at Backlash the result was what we got here with him turning face on Raw the next night.
He was getting big pops leading up so it was only a matter of time.

I kind of always remember that The Rock turned heel in the Spring of 1999 because he went into Wrestlemania XV as a heel, but was babyface by Over The Edge less than two months later. Still, I clearly recall a Raw leading up to the PPV where Triple H locked him in a casket and smashed it like a maniac with a sledgehammer. Might be one of the first memories of him using what would eventually become his trademark weapon.

The Rock was ready to go babyface before Survivor Series 98 when they teased it, but it was part of a storyline ruse.

I'm sure Vince had to be a little perplexed by Attitude Era fans. He started Johnson off as a colorful, cheery, legacy babyface and fans hated Johnson. Then Rocky becomes a slick, foul-mouthed narcissist who feuds with the most popular guy in the company, and fans quickly adore him. Give Vince credit for letting the fans have what they obviously wanted instead of trying to force them to jeer the Rock.

The Rock was ready to go babyface before Survivor Series 98 when they teased it, but it was part of a storyline ruse. I think you can consider those couple of months in 1998 from September-November as a legitimate, albeit brief, babyface run. The Rock was over like crazy for a while by that point. I remember at Summerslam when he faced HHH in the ladder match, as he set up for the People's Elbow. That was the first time I recall the crowd popping HUGE for that move and he was the heel facing a VERY popular babyface at the time. New York is the toughest crowd there is so when they start to embrace you it's almost like a badge of honor. People couldn't wait to start loving The Rock. I think that is what made his heel turn at Survivor Series even better. When he debuted, all he wanted was for the fans to love him and they spit in his face. Now the tables turned and as soon as they were ready to love him, he said "Screw You!" and spit in their face.

I don't know how I can't remember Cornette on commentary at this time. I guess my memory of the attitude era is fuzzy.

Rock was getting cheered against everyone except for Austin....they had to turn him. Plus it worked out well....the Corporate Ministry was so big the 2 man unit of Austin & Rock against them was EFFIN dynamite boys.
Rocks excellent heel helped HHH become a top face in 1998.
Rocks freshly turned mega face helped HHH become a top heel in 99. HHHs heel turn was one of the most surprising EVER in 99 @ WM15. Unreal.
Loved Rock & Austin facing down the odds here every week at this stage.....
