What do you use to make the strap? I tried foam sheets but it doesn't look right.

I made a custom IWGP Championship and I used some fake leather material from Wal-Mart and it looked alright.

Go to a second hand store and look for belts, purses, shoes, jackets, etc. that you can cut up. Those are great sources of thin fake leather.
However, make sure you get the durable kind. There's some really cheap stuff that will flake off if you flex it too much.
Failing that, just order some 1mm real leather from ebay or whatever, cut it to size, stick the plates to the strap with 5-minutes epoxy or contact cement.

Go to JoAnn fabrics and buy marine vinyl. Works great and have many different colors
