He's been kinda fine, but he set very high expectations with that awesome debut against Sami Zayn and since then, he's never even come close to that. His matches are rarely much better than mediocre, and because of the language barrier and weird persona, he doesn't fit the standard promo/skit formula they use. He's certainly been pushed more than his performances have warranted, but seems to have settled in around the right level now. US champion, not on the show every week, hopefully building himself up to knock it out of the park in a big match.

As a face? Yeah. After Takeover: Dallas, Shinsuke just phoned it in until he uppercutted AJ’s bollocks.
His heel run was decent for the first few months but now he’s just...meh.

I would say no. His run has been better than most. But I think Nakamura comes across as unmotivated at times. Seems like he's on autopilot. Even in NXT to a lesser extent. And you'd be crazy to think Vince doesn't notice that. Vince loves his top guys to go above and beyond, and I don't think he's going to get that from Nakamura. That was always Nakamura. Even in NJPW, he was mostly on autopilot. He'd only step up for the major shows, which is why I could never consider him one of the best in the world. He takes too many off days. However, he's basically given us "B Show" Shinsuke since signing. Honestly, he's only had one or two matches I'd truly consider great since coming to the US and that was against Zayn. The ones with Finn and Rusev (Fastlane) would be next in line.

I wouldn't say "failure", but his booking's been one of the most inconsistent in recent memory. I honestly think the heel turn hasn't done any favours for him. I think turning AJ would've been a better solution. Also, he should've won the WWE Title at 'Mania

Yes and No. Yes in the sense that he had major hype and expectations around him that weren’t realistic. Especially when Vince and co are in charge of the main roster more so than Triple H. There’s very few people who have immediate success on the main roster and remain successful. Especially Nakamura who had only a year in NXT and had to adjust to a watered down American style. On the other hand, he’s been used consistently, was in the WWE title match at Mania, and is a he current US champ. There’s worse spots to be in for sure. I agree completely with this. While he was a big star in Japan and ROH (and even NXT), it was almost impossible for him to live up to that hype when he was moved to the main roster. But then again, he won the Royal Rumble by eliminating John Cena and Roman Reigns. He's had multiple WWE Championship matches. He's the current United States Champion. I think Nakamura's well set at the moment.

YEAOOOHH!
I wouldn't say he's had a bad run but it's nowhere as stellar as it could have been. So in that sense if say he's been something of a failure but only because he is the victim of sky high expectations.
I remember reading that Vince has final say on everything that happens in NXT. I can't imagine that's true. There's no way Vince looked at what Shinsuke was doing in NXT and thought to himself "I need this guy punching everyone in the dick."

I don't know if I would go as far as to say he's a failure, but I think he's probably overrated/couldn't live up to the hype surrounding him when he came in. Personally he does nothing for me.

I mean, he pretty much is in the same position as he was in New Japan, that high mid card/ main event when we need him guy that he was in new japan. He was being pushed down the card at the time he left and couldn’t do the style of matches there. He needed a lighter load and he got that in wwe. Was on top in Nxt for a year, sold a crap ton of merch, won the rumble, main evented mania, and now he is a fringe top guy on smackdown. It sounds like he did just fine and probably better than expected if we are being honest with ourselves.

i don’t think he’s a guy who benefits from being on tv weekly. he’s a unique act, so over exposure is a death sentence to him imo.

Yes, but what else could he do? I admit I never have and still don't see the appeal, but he was doomed by his inability to speak English. That's not on him so much as it's on the writers. The exact same thing happened with Asuka. As soon as her undefeated streak was over she disappeared, went to Smackdown, then started losing...to Billie and Payton even.
Nakamura is doing ok, sure, but this is as good as it's ever going to get for the biggest star in Japan. This is the company that pushed Becky down because they didn't like her brogue. Thankfully she's killing it now but at least she speaks English fluently as opposed to conversationally. Its not about the ring work in WWE unfortunately (although I'm not a fan of Nakamuras anyway).

I’m with this guy. I don’t get him either. Being a new-ish viewer, I was expecting this dynamic showman with incredible energy, particularly from how big of a deal he was entering WWE.

He had that one great debut match vs Zayn, but after that he showed me nothing. I felt all the hype he gets was for his entrance but other than the first match everything he does in the ring seems subpar.

He's very forgettable now so yes, he's a failure on the main roster. Askua is falling faster than Shinsuke however. I think a couple of Asian workers like this would highly benefit if they had a Sonny Ono manager with them.
